Which is better for use wioth WOT - ADblock Plus or NoScript
Sun Aug 17 03:11:31 2008 od Universal344
I currently use WOT in conjunction with NoScript, but I've heard a lot of talk about AdBlock Plus. What is this software? Is it free? Does it function in the same way as NoScript? Is it better than NoScript?
I use both of the add-ons. NoScript is great with blocking the ads that ABP doesn't block well, and NoScript also blocks scripts and is lighter, so NoScript is probably better, but I use both. ABP is great for statistics, and gets updated frequently.
ADP: 8.7/10
NS: 8.5/10
If you use a Mac (like me), NoScript is just to make you feel safer, it won't really help you much.
I'm pretty sure these add-ons have different purposes. While Adblock Plus might help with security problems sometimes, it's main purpose is to block ads. While NoScript can block ads sometimes, it's purpose is to improve your security by stopping scripts.
I couldn't deal with NoScript.. To much work to have a usable web page in most cases.. I use Adblock Plus with Element Hiding Helper ... Along with Adblock Filterset.G Updater...Lists I use are: Easylist and EasyElement (loaded seperately within Adblock Plus)...
I use No Script, Adblock Plus & CS Lite. The latter works just like No Script except it blocks cookies. I don't like all those tracking cookies. Only sites that need to recogniize me because of settings need to be let in. Yeah No Script can be a pain, but I like the safety. I've never had a virus or spyware, plus I'm careful what sites I go on.
I quit using No Script. There are plenty of scripts that are safe and not being able to see forms on web pages, use traffic exchanges and miss out on specials because they are all written in javascript ruins my surfing experience. If you have a good antivirus and firewall program then No Script is a waste of time. I use Panda and it catches everything. Stops viruses and spyware dead in it's tracks.
Now if you use McAfee or Nortons both being less effective antivirus programs then you would probably want to use No Script for safety and enable every site you can trust. Even the free antivirus programs plus the free Adaware work way better then Nortons or McAfee.
Good Suggestion....I have posts where I detail everything I use... They are most likely pretty far back in the forums though.. A big Hosts File can use alot of resources though..
The HOSTS file itself uses little resources but if you have the unnecessary DNS Client service active then it is the thing that is sucking up resources.
Adblock and "Element hiding helper" for fine-tuning. NoScript for all those stuff you never expected on any given website. Especialy googleanalytics and friends.
Ads are driven by scripts, Hacks are driven by scripts, exploits are driven by scripts... Cross server scripting is driven by scripts... Control the scripts, and you control the lion share of the Web Browser based hazards you may encounter.
Also each, and every dynamic functions within a web page or an entire site for this matter is driven by scripts, that can be in simple form defined as a simple text statement such: "Begin script & End Script" statement... which the browser will interpret then process.
NoScript works by identifying the start, and end of each script and blocks processing them until the user acknowledges it to run or not. Hostile scripts work because they run invisible in the background without the user knowing. NoScript effectively interferes in this process, As a result Noscript combined with a tool such as WOT, should prove invaluable to secure ones online experience! They are easy, and they work!
I use both Adblock Plus and NoScript in addition to WOT. AdBlock mainly blocks advertisements while NoScript can also block ads but can also stop malicious scripts from running. Although ads run on scripts, for enhanced security, I recommend using AdBlock Plus and NoScript with WOT.
Yes I think that you can and even you should use both. AdBlock will get a lot of ads out while NoScript will block everything that you don't want to start and replace some of them with an icon. You can then click on it to start the video or the sound that was stopped. Like that the downloading of pages is faster because you just dl what you need.
All I explain there for NoScript will not work like that at the beginning but you will have to play with several settings. It's not too difficult, just read everything slowly in the NoScript settings and try different one (I just work on 1st grade sites like site.com and not with www. and http://www. if you see what I mean).
In fact, that's an ''howto'' surf the web safer, faster and with more pleasure then ever
That's just my point of view and it works great for me. If I had children, they could (or would? excuse me, english is my 2nd langage) surf the net safely. Hope this help.
I also wrote it because of so much people who complain about annoying ads (yes they are) : everybody SHOULD know firefox, adblock, noscrpt or whatever other solution which keeps these ?!@°+=}> things OUT !!! That's this kind of message that should spam our emails ; -p
Amazing how IE8 users get by without silly NoScript. They really must be done for right? And amazing some think internet is only safe with scripting turned off. Also amazing users are to have all that power, wow - that seems very comforting letting user analyzing webpages. Since using Firefox that setup is really mind blowing. Firefox is not about excluding major engine of internet pages, the opposite actually. Javascript IS safe regardless of what hype you hear. Noscript is a tool for the paranoid, like "cookie controllers" are. Has nothing to do with actual security. Does not help it is being advertised as a must-have securing what cannot be secured in other way. Just typical marketing, year old too...
Only actual real world use you will ever get from NoScript is testing browser exploits on old versions. Try YesScript instead https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/492... Can be useful in other ways but don't eat the security claims. They are simply daft.
Filterset G should not be used with Adblock Plus btw, is dead long ago. See Adblock Plus site.
While I agree with Reprotected that this old post is too old for posting, just one thing from me.
I remember back in those IE6 - Win98 times, that JavaScripts more than once made my PC crash. I recently did an experiment at school, where we still have Win2000, IE6 and FF2.
The simple script
while(true)
window.alert("Crash!");
made both FF and IE un-usable. So I wouldn't agree with js9600.
Same lack of logic is still very much alive. Nothing is changed. Role of NoScript is minimal and hyped. There are users for such things of course but Firefox with no gadgets is not unsafe, IE8 is not unsafe.
Well, safety is not the only reason to use NoScript (even though it is one). Nasty things like those above aren't necessarily a safety risk, but can slow/block your browser. It's happened more than once to me without NoScript.
You see, many websites have scorecard comments concerning browser exploits. That is what NoScript prevents.
In the end, everyone for themselves decides whether they need it or not. :^)
Sure, but call a spade a spade - which is why I shake head of the typical NoScript hype ;) That is all about making it into a must-have, if you want to be "safe". There are tons of even more rigid extensions in privacy/security section of Mozilla add-on site btw, dig in... I am sure the dude behind NoScript could do more good for world internet peace if he contributed to Mozilla code instead of promoting his stuff as securing an otherwise shaky Firefox - ignoring IE8 too, heh.
I use WOT, Adblock Plus, BetterPrivacy, and NoScript. After clearing up a third infection (Useless ZoneAlarm and AVG) i'm taking no chances and recently installed the lot. Everything runs smoothly in the background and if i need to, i tell NoScript to allow script on the page with two clicks. Now that i've pimped up Firefox, dodgy redirected ad pages on the sites i love will be fucking with the wrong computer ;)
