Which is better for use wioth WOT - ADblock Plus or NoScript
Sun Aug 17 03:11:31 2008 – Universal344
I currently use WOT in conjunction with NoScript, but I've heard a lot of talk about AdBlock Plus. What is this software? Is it free? Does it function in the same way as NoScript? Is it better than NoScript?
I use both of the add-ons. NoScript is great with blocking the ads that ABP doesn't block well, and NoScript also blocks scripts and is lighter, so NoScript is probably better, but I use both. ABP is great for statistics, and gets updated frequently.
ADP: 8.7/10
NS: 8.5/10
If you use a Mac (like me), NoScript is just to make you feel safer, it won't really help you much.
I'm pretty sure these add-ons have different purposes. While Adblock Plus might help with security problems sometimes, it's main purpose is to block ads. While NoScript can block ads sometimes, it's purpose is to improve your security by stopping scripts.
I couldn't deal with NoScript.. To much work to have a usable web page in most cases.. I use Adblock Plus with Element Hiding Helper ... Along with Adblock Filterset.G Updater...Lists I use are: Easylist and EasyElement (loaded seperately within Adblock Plus)...
I use No Script, Adblock Plus & CS Lite. The latter works just like No Script except it blocks cookies. I don't like all those tracking cookies. Only sites that need to recogniize me because of settings need to be let in. Yeah No Script can be a pain, but I like the safety. I've never had a virus or spyware, plus I'm careful what sites I go on.
I quit using No Script. There are plenty of scripts that are safe and not being able to see forms on web pages, use traffic exchanges and miss out on specials because they are all written in javascript ruins my surfing experience. If you have a good antivirus and firewall program then No Script is a waste of time. I use Panda and it catches everything. Stops viruses and spyware dead in it's tracks.
Now if you use McAfee or Nortons both being less effective antivirus programs then you would probably want to use No Script for safety and enable every site you can trust. Even the free antivirus programs plus the free Adaware work way better then Nortons or McAfee.
Good Suggestion....I have posts where I detail everything I use... They are most likely pretty far back in the forums though.. A big Hosts File can use alot of resources though..
The HOSTS file itself uses little resources but if you have the unnecessary DNS Client service active then it is the thing that is sucking up resources.
Adblock and "Element hiding helper" for fine-tuning. NoScript for all those stuff you never expected on any given website. Especialy googleanalytics and friends.
Ads are driven by scripts, Hacks are driven by scripts, exploits are driven by scripts... Cross server scripting is driven by scripts... Control the scripts, and you control the lion share of the Web Browser based hazards you may encounter.
Also each, and every dynamic functions within a web page or an entire site for this matter is driven by scripts, that can be in simple form defined as a simple text statement such: "Begin script & End Script" statement... which the browser will interpret then process.
NoScript works by identifying the start, and end of each script and blocks processing them until the user acknowledges it to run or not. Hostile scripts work because they run invisible in the background without the user knowing. NoScript effectively interferes in this process, As a result Noscript combined with a tool such as WOT, should prove invaluable to secure ones online experience! They are easy, and they work!
I use both Adblock Plus and NoScript in addition to WOT. AdBlock mainly blocks advertisements while NoScript can also block ads but can also stop malicious scripts from running. Although ads run on scripts, for enhanced security, I recommend using AdBlock Plus and NoScript with WOT.

NoScript
Thu Sep 4 19:02:00 2008 – Nedd88I have heard from more than one Mac expert that NS on a Mac is way more than "feel good". Some deem it essential. I'm just sayin'...

They both consume system
Fri Aug 22 15:04:58 2008 – YoKennyThey both consume system resources were a HOSTS file does not.
I use hpHosts and MVPS HOSTS files only managed by HostsMan and I use its enclosed proxy HostsServer to speed up Internet browsing:

There is a version for MAC on hpHosts site.
I also use HostsMon..

Depends on level...
Thu Sep 4 23:14:23 2008 – phantazmAdblock targets ads, and is simple to use.
NoScript blocks everything, but not so automatic.
Adblock is probably the best as a beginning,
NoScript a later possibily of finetuning things.

Using NoScript you do not need Adblock!
