Oops, something went wrong... Please try again.

I have seen this message many times now: "Oops, something went wrong...".
And when I try to rate again, I'll just get another "Oops"...

This leaves a couple of questions:

I'm using an old windows pc, 'cause it still works. But, i am regularly reminded
that it could use more memory. So, perhaps the problem is on my side..?

If not, there's another thing I'm not sure of: It's possible to rate, and comment.
It is only when I try to save the rating, I get the Oops. And told to try again.
So far I haven't been any luckier when I tried again-again-again.

I don't know if I should try again, yet another time, until I got lucky?
Or, if I'm merely wasting more time..?

Re: Oops, something went wrong

It's not your computer, it's your session, which has probably expired. Try this:

1. Clear your cookies and restart the browser.

2. Didn't work? Reload the scorecard page with Shift+Reload to bypass browser cache.

3. Didn't work? Send us a problem report.

Another oops...

I just got the problem again. I tried refreshing WOT. No succes. I tried restarting FireFox. No succes. I then restarted windows. No succes. Now what? It still happens only occasionally, but still unpredictable, and irritating. Am I the only one experiencing this..?

And I'm still confused: I got the "oops", when I tried to save my rating. And when I closed it. But when I then try 'Edit', it looks as if the system remember how I rated. But is this temporarily, or is it stored permanently? I'm still not sure...

PS: My pc is just another standard box; windows XP SP3.
And my only problem is lack of memory sometimes...

Re: Another oops...

It's caused by an expired session, rebooting your computer won't help. Did you follow the steps in my previous response?

User picture

Well...

Sami: "Did you follow the steps in my previous response?"

Well, not quite; didn't clear the cookies - but I've never had cookie problems in Firefox before. Didn't try "Shift+Reload" either, I must admit (for similar reasons). However, I'm still puzzled, because now WOT rating works again, no problems. Can an expired session somehow 'come back to life'..? And how long does a session normally last..?

User picture

Re: Well...

The session expires in 24 hours and should be automatically restarted after that. If for some strange reason it isn't, clearing cookies, restarting Firefox, and reloading the page should solve the problem.

Hey phantazm!!

Is your Flash Player , version 10 or version 9 ? Are you using Firefox 3.0.4 ?

If you have version 10 of Flash Player , try uninstalling it and use version 9. Don't worry
It's patched. The reason I'm suggesting this is because on PCWorld Forum , we are or had a problem with this version. We could no longer Up-Load images to our posts. For whatever reason , version 10 disabled the image uploader. This Might
be the same if the rating pop-up is Flash based but, am only speculating.

Also Firefox 3.0.4 would also disable but, not completely , the image up-loader.
Instead of being able to up-load a few images to our posts , we could only
up-load one at a time. The version that we had to revert to is 2.0.0.18. This is the last
patched version of Firefox 2.

Here you will find the sites to download the above versions.

Adobe Flash Player V 9 http://www.filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_ie/4007/

Firefox 2.0.0.18 http://www.filehippo.com/download_firefox/4879/

Also , if you have not updated the Java applet , you should do so. Always keep
only one version of Java on your PC, that being the latest one. All others should be uninstalled.
Java http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp . Use the "Off Line Download"

Save to your preferred location. First ,Uninstall all other versions then, Install Latest.

Hope this helps.

re java

Thanks for posting that about java athlonite.I had 4 versions installed and was wondering if that was right. You answered my question without asking.I just uninstalled the oldest 3 and kept the latest 1.Freed up some disk space to.

Re-Re-Java!

My pleasure ,cod head!
There are too many people that are not aware of this. The reason behind the uninstalling of the old versions is that, your PC is still at risk of being infected through
the old versions even though you have the newer one installed. As you could see, they
take up Allot of space on your HDD. This is because , when Java Updates it's runtime, it does so with a whole new program. It does not overwrite the old one.
Hence , all of the lost space. If you can , spread the word about this. I do every chance I get. We can at least get back at those merchants of malware a little bit
at a time.

Uninstalling Java

Something else that people are not really aware of is that uninstalling Java through the traditional Control Panel>Add/Remove programs applet leaves behind a lot of registry remnants of Java. This is not so much of a security problem as it is an impediment to getting an updated version to simply work.

Can't remember the error messages . . . something about the "Java Run Time environment" not being installed, but a lot of times this has to do with the current version of Java reading a registry fragment of an older version that was incompletely removed by Control Panel.

To avoid this issue, there is a little utility called "JavaRa" at http://raproducts.org/ that removes all registry entries of older versions. I've used it and it works fine.

You can do a similar thing with RevoUninstaller, but JavaRa is a lot quicker. I highly recommend NOT using Control Panel>Add.Remove programs . . . it's very inefficient.

Re-Uninstalling Java

Hey BobJam!!

You're right about the JavaRa. We were talking about this last week and I should have
mentioned it. Although , I personally have never had a problem with Add / Remove
in XP or the Performance and Features in Vista removing Java, it might be a good idea to run JavaRa. On the other hand , Revo is an excellent uninstaller but, I would caution the use or misuse of the app. it is so easy to get rid of good files if you cannot recognize what those files are for. Just blindly trusting Revo to do the right thing would be like trusting any register cleaner to clean the registry with ought any
damage done.

To be complete in the removal of any out-dated Java applets, verify that there are
no files left of the old uninstalled applets in the C:\ Program Files\Java.

Also , to reduce the risk of getting the Temps Files that Java keeps on your PC
from being infected, If and When your PC does get an affliction, would be to ,Go
to the Control Panel>Click on the Java entry to bring up the Java Control Panel
and in the Settings tab, Delete the Temps Files. You could , at the same time , Uncheck the check mark that says "Keep Temporary Files On My Computer".
This would be one place less for the infection to hide.

Revo can be dangerous in the hands of a novice

Yes, Athlonite, Revo can indeed be unsafe to use in the hands of a novice.

As a matter of fact, recently I had recommended it's use to a neighbor who is essentially a novice. Fortunately, he called me and over the phone it became apparent to me that he did not know what he was doing with Revo. I had that revelation when I asked him what showed that was in bold and he said "nothing". I was confused because I know Revo doesn't show the registry entries unless there's something in bold. Then I asked him to look at the symbols and tell me which ones looked different from the one above. When he said "Should I delete HKey Current User", I said "Don't do anything, I'll be right over".

Needless to say, I haven't recommended Revo to other novices. It's a good program, but as you suggested, it is not to be used by an inexperienced person.

Checking...

Thanks for your suggestion; maybe it's obsolete software that's cousing problems. I just started a scan (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/) to see what's perhaps not up to date. In the meantime I can add that I've got FireFox 3.0.4

Right back...

Hm, I've got adobe flashplayer 10 - but I'm not sure it is the real cause. After all, I only get the "Oops try again..." occasionally. Normally things just work...

User picture

re-checking!

Hey phantazm!!

Thanks for the link but, I have the PSI already installed since the beta.
OK, the reason I asked you to verify the Flash Player is that PCWorld forum
was the only site that this happened to me and the other regular members.
Now , we are getting reports that others are seeing the same errors.
Keep Firefox 3.0.4 and uninstall Flash Player 10 and replace with version 9
to see if this solves your problem.
You know that you can have Firefox clear all or partially clear your private data
after you close Firefox. I'm sure you know how but, I'll post anyway in case someone
else doesn't.
Go to Tools (Firefox) , Options... . a pop-up window will open. In that window go to "Privacy"
and from there you can configure Firefox to Clear All Data. Also you can view the
Cookies that are stored and the Third Party Cookies that are Blocked. You can also
Allow the sites that you wish to retain the cookies. Click on the "Exceptions".

Try to re-configure Firefox by adding and keeping this site's cookies to see if that makes a difference.

Another suggestion. I know , I'm sometimes a pain the A**. Don't worry, I've been told
LOL! . Have you tried IE7 or 8 ?
I am also testing IE 8 Beta 2 and so far, have no problems with rating sites when
it's possible. Anyways , just a thought.

Have you tried clean profile?

Hey phantasm,

Have you tried a clean profile with FF (no addons), and then just installing the WOT add on. Maybe it's a conflict with another add on. Of course, if it's only a sometimes thing, it's going to be hard to test if that's the solution . . . or anything else for that matter.

These "intemittant" problems are the hardest to troubleshoot. Just when you think you may have solved the problem, it rears it's ugly head again. I've had several problems like that, and am currently in the middle of one (slowdown and very slow repainting of screens) that I had thought I solved several months ago, but has come back now. Classic behavior similar to the "intermittant" issue . . . happens sometimes . . . doesn't happen others. Trying to tie these things to a single circumstance is very difficult and tedious. And the biggest nightmare is that these problems may be the result of MORE THAN ONE THING. And then those multiple things may have to be enabled in a certain sequence just to duplicate the problem.

Makes me just want to do a clean install and start all over with a clean machine.

User picture

Hm, maybe multiple...?

BobJam: "these problems may be the result of MORE THAN ONE THING"

You're right! It could be a combination error - that would at least explain why this problem normally does not show up, and then unexpectedly pops up. And disappears again...

So, right now I'm updating all older versions, to see if that may help.
That may take a while. In the meantime:
thanks for all suggestions so far..!

RE-Maybe Multiples!

Hey phantazm!!

Ok, I'm just curious, did you get that thing to work yet or did you just forget
that you have a problem that needs some attention.? LOL!

Athlonite.

Your help is always needed.

User picture

Still maybe...

No, I didn't forget that I had a problem. But...

I haven't seen it since this discussion started.
Some off line problems grabbed my attention.

I suspect a memory problem, however. When browsers run out of memory, they have a tendency to act weirdly, before they collapse (especially IE, FF not much). Recently I went from 1024x768 to 1280X960 - it looked better, but it also required more memory than available. For a while I was more or less back to 'single tasking': close one program before another is opened. Quite impractical, so I am now back to 1024x768. I hope this also helps in the case of "Oops..."

But we'll see. I report back here, when I know more...

User picture

Maybe...

Just got the problem again, when I attempted to mass rate for the first time.
This time I tried deleting cookies and confirmed sessions: that helped!

PS: Mass rating is a really neat feature! Thanks... :-)

User picture

Memory??

Hey phantazm!!

You seem to think it might have something to do with insufficient memory. Since this seems to happen only when you do memory intensive work , have you tried Adding a stick to see if this could cure it? Or maybe it is running out of space on the Page File.
Try adding more megs to it and see what happens.

Didn't I read that you have to be at a certain level to have the ability to mass rate?
