Can Google be this stupid ?

All our efforts to stop SOPA could come crushing down , with the actions of Google trying to beat Facebook

I do hope no politician uses the plans of Google as an excuse to revive SOPA
The arrogance of Google believing that no one could live without their services , could create the right environment for some politicians to bring to the table , the lousy law of SOPA and all due to a company that has lost touch with reality
Here is a piece that I read in BBC

"If it simplifies things then that is a positive, but it does appear to be a case of if you do not like it, you have to walk away from it. Google has become a way of life for some people. They cannot do without it even if they do not like the direction it is going in," said Mr Kellett.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16720406

It will truly be a sad legacy for Google if they are remembered as the company that closed the net !

I hope google comes to their senses and stops this, or else it's not going to end well for them.

RE: Can Google be this stupid ?

If they made it optional, people wouldn't be complaining about searches that are more useful to them. For instance, Google already ranks sites in my own city higher than those elsewhere, which saves me digging through pages of hits in larger cities to get to something of use.

But I also don't want my searches for spamvertised sites or my searches for items for people at work who can't manage to construct their own search terms to make it harder to find what I want.

As a result, I'll be logging out of Google whenever possible, and I'll consider using other search engines so not all the information is commingled. They end up with less data, not more, and I lose some of its functionality to avoid losing even more functionality.

By the way, for those who are interested, the cookie functionality on Seamonkey is considerably more convenient than Firefox -- it's a simple dropdown menu from the top menu bar.

RE: Can Google be this stupid ?

The Internet existed before Google, and the loss of Google would have next to no effect on the Internet as a whole. Anyway, most Internet users would probably be more distressed by the loss of Farce-Book and Twatter than by the loss of any particular search engine.

RE: Can Google be this stupid ?

I found it interesting to visit Google's "preview" of their consolidated Privacy Policies and to use the link to its Dashboard (log-in required). Although I don't use Google search while logged in, the Dashboard showed me a log of searches that I had performed several months ago when I obviously had inadvertently logged in. I apparently was looking for "Replica Watches" that day. I've deleted the log, of course. It occurs to me that tabloid newspapers that hack cell phones would find it easy to hack Google accounts as well, so one's private profile isn't entirely safe.

I am disappointed that Google offers no opt-out for their tracking pixels, or spying web beacons as I ordinarily call them.

I have replaced my search engine with duckduckgo.com and am open to suggestions of better alternatives.
I canceled my youtube account months ago because of their insistence on linking my gmail profile with this service.

Google is getting on my nerves long ago. They support copyright nazis, examples are from youtube. they have a useful search engine, but now for me, bing is better.

I can recommend Scroogle SSL and Ixquick search engines.

I use ixquick and DuckDuckGo is good as well. The only googe services I use is G+ for a group page and Gmail. With Gmail though I never pass on the email address as I have domain email forwarders that I use. That way if I am unhappy with the service I can easily move to another email provider without losing any mail.

Gmail has sent out notifications to users about the new policy changes, you can view them at: http://www.google.co.uk/policies/

RE: Can Google be this stupid ?

This latest round of privacy issues has led to my decision to scap Google search and take up ixquick. Thanks to you all for the links above. Such a pity as I was fond of Google but their business practices have gone too far into the dark side imo.

Bing is the Microsoft search engine, and Microsoft are probably more concerned about copyright infringements than Google.

They don't participate in promoting money hungry corporates like EMI, RIAA, MPAA, VEVO, WMG and SME. Yes, I think they can be more supportive but since they don't display anything like google or youtube has, they don't do anything at all. I saw how google moves when it comes to this copyrights.

I also use DuckDuckGo right now, because of anonymity.

Ixquick have added another search engine to their armoury. It is called Startpage HTTPS, and has an interesting addition in that a user can choose to use an Ixquick Proxy for additional anonymity.

BTW, I have recently noticed an increase in the number of sites that block or hinder page requests from secure search engines.

One of my favorite features of Google search is the time factor. DuckDuckGo and Ixquick don't seem to allow for this.
Is there a search engine that can do time sensitive searches?

Ixquick isn't doing as well at ignoring the SEO manipulation noise. I just did a search and Google got the site I wanted as the #1 search result and Ixquick didn't have it in the first few pages at all. The top results were basically all-advertising/no-useful-content sites.

Seems to be the main gripe with search engines, you bin one for a particular reason only to face a different issue on another. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it. You are then left deciding which of them is the best of the bunch, knowing that there will have to be some compromise.

Maybe there is yet one which is above them all and not yet posted within WOT. We can live in hope eh?

RE: Can Google be this stupid ?

    @AC+IV
So you choose the engine for the purpose. Google for fuzzy search, and Ixquick when you know exactly what you want (but with the right parms, I still get more out of Google).

    @link28
I believe Uhu200 alludes to the shrinkage of engine choices.

Back in the day, AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, Lycos, NorthernLight, and others were themselves - independently developed engines competing and driving everyone nuts with different parms and results. Currently those which still exist are not themselves, courtesy of APIs developed by more successful companies. Most search sites just piggyback on the APIs of a few major search engines. And fewer still ...

As of last year (I think), Yahoo search (with its wonderful SiteExplorer back-links report) is no longer Yahoo search - it's actually (Microsoft) Bing. At one point there was even a scuffle when Bing was accused of skimming Google's results. Microsoft denied it, Google said they caught it in real time, and then the whole thing quietly melted away. But curiously ...

About that time, a Bing rep solicited mass feedback on LinkedIn about how they could improve Bing and its Webmaster Tools, and they refitted the Webmaster Tools GUI in MS SilverLight so every form field had to be manually filled by keyboard only. Not that I suspect they were trying to obstruct testing ... or something. Nah.

In any case, with Bing listing about 1/3 of my site (their CSRs explained that's because Bing is an elite engine), compared to Google, I figure I will go back and have a look at Bing's Webmaster Tools someday after they've had more time to wake up and smell the feedback.
