    Windows Update Error

    Hi everybody!
I've started this topic in the Technical Advice forum section as I could not find somthing similar. However I did not search everywhere as so many pages were listed. Please will anyone with administrative priviliges post it elsewhere if a related forum already exists.[and tell me what you've done!]
When I get the following message: Windows update error 800f020b I just don't know what to do next. I assume the code has zeros not capital Os as other letters are lower case. Why can't the Microsoft programmers make their error messaes more user friendly?
I have been trying to install a Logitech QuickCam Pro Webcam for laptops. I had been advised to disable spyware but am unsure if I've got any installed. I rely on Microsoft's own firewall for security but don't know how to edit to allow selected programmes access. Might this be the problem?
I'm using the Vista operating system platform.
    Mant thanks,
    novice user, Richard142

    Update error !

    Hey Richard !
This seems like a driver error. As for your Security apps. You'll have to access the
"Security Center". This is how you access this section of Vista :

Click on the Start button , then , click on the "Control Panel" . A new screen or Folder will pop-up. In that Folder , you will see another folder named "Security Center". It will have a Shield on it with the colors of Windows Operating System.
Double Click on that folder and inside , you should see Four Drop Down menus.

The first one is for the Firewall. If it is GREEN then , the Firewall is Activated. If it is RED , it is Disabled. You can change the settings from the Left Hand entries. Simply click on the "Windows Firewall" to either Activate or to Disable it.

The next Drop Down Menu is for the "Automatic Updates" This module is the Update Manager for Vista. If no one has tampered with it's settings then, this one should also be GREEN. IF it is either Yellow or RED , this means that you are either NOT getting any updates or that it is set to only Warn You when updates are ready to be downloaded and installed. In your case , I would recommend that you click on the "Downward Arrow" to the Right and Click on the "Change settings" . You will get a Pop-Up and the First setting in the Pop-Up is the Right one for you.

The Third Drop Down Menu is for the Malware Protection . If you do have any installed , this menu will tell you the name of the security app. installed . IF there is NO security app. installed then this menu will be RED. Again , from the entries on the Left Hand side of this main screen , you can access the "Windows Defender". Click on it and it should reflect it's state of operation . GREEN meaning it is Active and RED meaning it is Disabled. You can re-enable it's working status from within .
IF you have a AntiVirus installed , the name of this application will also be shown.

The Fourth Drop Down Menu is for the "Other Security Settings" This should also be GREEN in color. This is for your Internet settings and the UAC settings.

Now, if you could PLZ take note of all info. contained within this folder , Mainly , the names of the security apps. that is reported in this folder and the Color of the Drop Down Menus and post back with this information , we should be better equipped to help you.

    Athlonite.

    Your help is always needed.

    Firewall is not enough

richard142: "I rely on Microsoft's own firewall for security"

Windows firewall is not the best, but even the best would not be enough alone.
A firewall only checks the traffic, not the content on your pc.

One of my friends had a firewall (don't recall which, but not windows) and he was completely sure that this was all he ever needed. However, when I tried F-secures online scanner, it found 4 virus - and who knows how long they've been lurking there...

    Get a second opinion: http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml
(Explorer only, but all windows systems have IE)

PS: There are several free versions of antivirus programs,
so you can test them before you buy: AVG, Avast, AntiVir, etc...

      Rudimentary HIPS

On line Armor and Comodo have a rudimentary HIPS ("Host Intrusion Prevention System") incorporated with their firewall.

A HIPS is a good thing to have because it will tell you when an app is about to be modified AND what program is trying to do the modification. The HIPS alert (Comodo's is called "Defense +") will then give you a chance to block or allow the modification.

You should also test your firewall with GRC's ShieldsUP and GRC's Leak Test.. Those pages of the GRC site explain these tests.

    Second opinion

Patient: Are you sure that I am going to die in 6 months?
    Doctor: Yes
Patient: I want a second opinion!
    Doctor: You're ugly too.

F-Secure found no problem on my XP Pro system with AntiVir.

      Or perhaps

User: Are you sure I have no unwanted visitors in my house?
Firewall: Yes, there is none. I am always guarding the door!
User: But how about my windows..?
Anti virus: You cannot know if you haven't checked? Shall I do it..?
