      Easy way to update

Just finished updating all of the aforementioned software.
I recently found a neat new way to check for updates on a lot of my installed software. File Hippo makes a small tool called the FileHippo.com Update Checker. Here is the link: http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/
Install this and run it at periodic intervals. It will scan your computer and load a web page showing any updates.
One drawback is that the tool only checks for software that FileHippo hosts. Still, that is a large collection.
The tool is made by the people that run FileHippo, so it is completely safe! :-0

        Filehippo

I use it alongside Secunia PSI as it picks up what Secunia doesn't and I think it's a great little tool to have :-)

I use Secunia PSI too! I have found it to be extremely useful.

I just installed it. How can you change the browser to Firefox?

    Sandboxie

If your default browser is FF open the Sandboxie Control, click on Sandbox > Default Box > Run Sandboxed > Run Web Browser.

You can force it to run in Sandbox > DefaultBox > Sandbox Settings.
New winow opens, click on Program Start > Forced Programs and click on Add By Name and type in Firefox, click OK then click OK again.

Not always a good idea to force it though, use the first method given in preference :-)

      ----

Hm, even though Firefox is my defauolt browser, Sandboxie always opens IE and also the icons for .html documents are IE icons...

Still, Firefox and not IE is my default browser. wth?

        maybe

IE settings have that "check for default browser" selected and they're both arguing over "who's the boss"
make sure neither IE and FF have that option selected, set FF to default, save changes, reboot. :)

    Hello,

no that didn't work, sorry, but now I tried something else that did:

I simply let IE become the standard browser. Afterwards, FF asked me whether I wanted it to be the standard browser again, and after clicking yes, it reset the settings. It's now working, thx!

      wth

Without me doing anything, IE re-gained control. HTML files were reset to IE, and also sandboxie opened IE again. I have had to reset it to firefox manually.

    I do use Sandboxie and

I do use Sandboxie and cotojo's statement caught my attention. I was running Firefox in Sandboxie by using the "Forced Programs" method. After reading the post I have switched to the posted advice. I was wondering why the "Forced Programs" method isn't recommended.

    Sandboxie

If you run your browser as a 'forced program' there are times when you want to take it outside of the box as some addons don't always stay once the sandbox is deleted.

In the pro version there are slightly more options, like multiple browser windows and programs open in separate sandboxes :-)

I had nothing but problems with Sandboxie

It did things I did not want it to do and did not do things I wanted it to do.

I remember what my dear old departed mum would say Don't play in the sandbox as that's where cats love to leave their &#%& deposits

      YoKenny,

Thats a shame, Iv'e had not problems with Sandboxie running on XP Home and I am sure glad to have that extra barrier in my system to stop any unwanted nasties getting through.

      Re:

The only thing I found to be a little annoying was that it starts up every time I turn the PC on. I disabled it through [Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Services]. I don't like unessential start up items, because, I don't like waiting five minutes for the PC to boot up. I hope this helps a little.

EDIT: If you don't know what something is, leave it alone! You can really mess things up with this tool!

        Like I said before

Don't play in the Sandbox unless you want to leave a mess around.

I take good care of my systems and the time I tried Sandboxie on one system the only way to get it back to the way it was before Sandboxie was System Restore to before Sandboxie or the dreaded FORMAT then OS install which thankfully I did not have to do.

Does that mean you can't really get rid of Sandboxie once installed - or what...?

            Sandboxie

You can uninstall it just as you can other programs, but it's a lot safer when going to risky sites :-)

          Re: Like I said before

When I said "You can really mess things up with this tool!", I was talking about [Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Services], not sandboxie. Anyway, I just wanted to clear up what I meant.

I still am wondering why you hate sandboxie so much. It's not like I use it often [I might actually uninstall it due to inactivity], so you can be assured that I am no fanboy. I am just wondering what your reasoning is.

            Cranky

Sandboxie can be cranky on some systems. It doesn't necessarily "work and play well" with certain stuff, though on my system it works just fine.

Btw, when you de-fragmentate your hard drive and then delete the sandbox - doesn't Sandboxie delete other data as well?

      Sandbox

When you finish surfing, delete the contents of the sandbox before cleaning out any temp files or defragging etc.

The only items that sandboxie deletes are the items within it, apart from what the user 'recovers'.

Keeps it all nice and clean :-)

I run mine with the box checked that automatically deletes the content of sandboxie.
