until July the 11th. Here you will find the links for the reduced price on W7.
Windows 7 Pre-Order Offer US :
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/offers/pre-or... .
This is the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Tool to see if your PC will upgrade easily to W7.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/upgrade... .
Remember , you only have from the 26 of June to the 11th of July to take advantage of this offer.
Damn , I sound like a salesman for MS LOL !

Trial version is available free
Fri 26 Jun 2009 03:15:59 PM UTC — SharonZ (not verified)Hi,
I downloaded the trial version from Microsoft's website free of charge (still a release candidate of Windows 7) and it is working fine. I have time till next summer to convert it to the real version. Everything has been working fine so far ... it's not as heavy as Vista.
Sharon
Hey Sharron !!
Fri 26 Jun 2009 11:45:05 PM UTC — AthloniteActually , If you have Vista , you will probably be able to do a "in Place" upgrade. This means that you could insert the DVD from W7 and simply upgrade Vista. No need for a Clean install.
To know for sure if you could , try the Upgrade tool from the link I posted in the original post. I have and do not need to re-install (clean install) .
I did this once with ME. From Windows 98SE to Windows ME. To my surprise , it worked flawlessly. Although , I can't say as much for ME. LOL !
Yes, you do have till next Summer to evaluate the RC but, if you choose to buy W7 at that time , you will pay Full price for it. The current Full price for Home Premium is
$119.99 US and the Pro version is $199.99 US . So , quite a savings as you can get Home Premium for $49.99 US and Pro for $99.99 US.
I still sound like a salesperson for MS .
I have already ordered my copy of Home Premium 32bit and will do a upgrade to Vista in Oct. when I receive it. My next notebook (which should be Christmas 09) will be either the Eurocom 18 inch or HP HDX 18.4 inch notebook with the 64bit W7. No more big boxes for me.

Am running the W7RC in a
Fri 26 Jun 2009 08:12:03 PM UTC — BobJamAm running the W7RC in a SunVM on my 1GB laptop. Don't have enough memory to install any apps on it, but at least I am able to evaluate the bare bones OS, and IE8 runs on it too.
And all I want to do is learn my way around it, 'cause when I get a new machine this fall I'm sure it will come with W7 preinstalled. So, I really don't have any need to buy it as a standalone OS.
Am liking it so far. It actually runs very nicely in the VM with only 400MB RAM dedicated to the VM partition. Was not even sure it would run with that little RAM, but was pleasantly surprised when it did.
Was wondering if I was going to have to "special order" for an XP installation, but as I said, so far I am rather impressed with W7 and I think I'll be making the transition smoothly to W7 on a new machine and without much XP "remorse".
The only thing I haven't been able to test is the compatibility of some of my legacy software.
Hey BobJam !!
Sat 27 Jun 2009 12:22:41 AM UTC — AthloniteHope all is well on your side ! (the last time I asked this , the member left. Thinking I'm the jinks here) . I had the Beta in a VMWare from Jan. to May. I really liked it too. The only feature I still don't like is the WMP 12. I don't know if they fixed it but, in the Beta it was in Blocks . You couldn't access the whole player. It would come in individual blocks. (ie.Now Playing , Library , Burn...) . How do you like IE8. I use for some sites (although , I don't Have too) and it is pretty fast.
I had allocated 1Gig of ram (have three) for the VM and it was fast. Allot faster than Vista. BUT, it wouldn't play the Aero. It will need two Gigs of ram to access the Aero.
In Vista , if I turn off the Aero well, Vista is a completely different OS. It is SO fast you would be amazed . Aero is a nice feature but, from my experiences , it would be best to run it in a 64bit OS with at least 4 Gigs of ram. I could run just about any program I could think of. No conflicts. I had the usual security programs ( Avira 9 , PC Tools Firewall and Trojan Remover. ) I was pleasantly surprised to see that this config worked well in W7 .
As far as I can see, whatever plays well with Vista will also play in W7. PLUS you'll have the option of downloading Vitual Software from MS to run XP so, you don't have to worry about your legacy programs.
I know that if you want to upgrade to W7 from XP you Will have to do a Clean Install.
This is what MS says about it :
I am running Windows XP, can I upgrade to Windows 7?
Microsoft designed Windows 7 Upgrade media for Windows Vista. A customer with Windows XP can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade media but must back up their files, clean install, and then reinstall their applications.
As long as you have the hardware to run W7 , you won't have any problems upgrading .
This is why I mentioned this offer . For 50 bucks you have a full retail OS. I think just having an extra copy around is worth the expense

XP on Win7
Sat 27 Jun 2009 09:08:50 AM UTC — Seattle JohnA (fully licensed) version of XP is included with Win7. The caveat here is that it is a 'virtual' version of XP, designed for users of 'older' equipment to be able to run 'legacy' programs on W7...unfortuantly, if your older equipment will not support a virtual environment, then the virtual XP will also not run...kind of a "Catch-22".
All in all, the $49.95/99.95 deal is fantastic! GREAT OS, bargain price. And, as a side-note: Microsoft states that the DVD has both the 32/64 bit version on it. Some, but not all DVD's are capable of running 'dual layer', so I am guessing that they are following Canonical's (Ubuntu) example of putting the 32 bit vers. on one side, and the 64 bit vers. on the other side. If that is the case, my DVD will 'upgrade' my present laptop, plus the older 32 bit one. Hmmm.
Pretty slick
Sun 28 Jun 2009 08:04:51 AM UTC — BobJamAthlonite: "How do you like IE8"
Pretty slick. Has a lot of new security features. Trying to catch up to FireFox, but hasn't quite gotten there yet. Good effort, though. Vastly improved over IE7.
Athlonite: "I don't know if they fixed it"
I think they did (WMP).
Athlonite: "I think just having an extra copy around is worth the expense"
But wouldn't you get an OEM CD with a new machine anyway? (Well . . . with some assemblers that's not the case).
Hey BobJam !
Sun 28 Jun 2009 08:48:23 AM UTC — AthloniteIf you have a Dell , I think you may get the DVD to go with whatever you bought but, HP and Compac , Lenovo and one more that I can't think of right now, all have a recovery partition from which , you would burn the image . This means , re-installing all the crap that you worked so hard to get rid of.
Wiki have a pretty good explanation of this process :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_partition .
Good to hear from you again .

Sat 04 Jul 2009 10:26:29 PM UTC — FlyAquaAwesome!!
...Hm, prices in Germany for Vista are almost TWICE as much (roughly 160%) as in the USA!!!
What tells me it'll be the same for Win7...
@ FlyAqua
Sun 05 Jul 2009 12:44:36 AM UTC — AthloniteI'm sure you'll be able to save a bundle with this "Introductory" price or should I say ,
"Got Ya" price LOL !
Here in Canada , the offer is $64.99 and the regular price would be $129.99. So, if we go by these prices whether you are in the US or in Canada , you still get to save 50 to 55 % of the original price.
Isn't there family in the US that could send you a copy at their price.??

Sun 05 Jul 2009 03:13:25 AM UTC — FlyAquaNah, not necessarily... =)
In the US, you pay $129 for VIsta Home Premium.
In Germany, you pay €119 ($166). I'd say, the special reduced price for the professional would be AT LEAST €90, and I'm not willing to pay that...
-nvm, there's still some time to get it from the US, well, as a download package. All I need now is an internet connection that's faster than 10Kbps.
...or hm, is there a similar offer in New Zealand maybe? That's where I am till August (lol)
Windows 7 upgrade.
Sun 05 Jul 2009 08:59:20 AM UTC — paul gHi,everyone.I emailed Colin the other day to ask if i could pay PC World were i got this PC from to totally take off vista home premium and install Win 7 premium for me.To try and make this PC more stable and he told me about the pre order offer,Which was good news,But i want to wait and see a while if Win 7 has any problems like vista did about programs not running on it till they caught up. This PC has 500 gig HD, 3 gig ram, intel qaud core,Dell studio 540..Have any of you who are testing Win 7 had any program conflicts?? Colin told me that PC World could do this for me so i will go for it if it will make things better......
Thanks for your time........cheers........p.............
If You Dont Ask You Will Never Know..
Hey Paul !!
Sun 05 Jul 2009 10:06:13 AM UTC — AthloniteI guess you are talking about PC World the Electronic Outlet ? I live in Canada and also am a member of PCWorld "The Electronic Magazine" based in California USA. I always get them confused as the one you are talking about is in the UK.Right ?
I used the Windows 7 Beta for 5 months and never had a problem with program compatibility.
BobJam is also using the RC1 . If you take a look at his post above , he mentions how good it is.
If you are to upgrade to Windows 7 then , I would look into getting the Deal from Microsoft. As I mentioned , we get that deal first (North America and Japan) and Europe will get it starting July 15th. I would certainly look into Pre-Ordering Windows 7 on that date if you are really interested .
The specs for your PC is more than enough to support Windows 7. What ever worked in Vista will also work just as well in W7. I have already ordered my copy .It will be delivered on October 22nd when W7 is available for the public.

Sun 05 Jul 2009 11:35:09 PM UTC — FlyAquawe get that deal first (North America and Japan) and Europe will get it starting July 15th
Windows Vista Business costs $199 in the USA. In Germany, it costs €279 ($389)!!!!
So, since we pay twice as much, I don't think we'll get THAT deal. Maybe we get Windows to a "normal" price, but not to a bargain price.
Not the right OS FlyAqua !!
Mon 06 Jul 2009 12:19:41 AM UTC — AthloniteWe're not talking about Vista here FlyAqua, it's Windows 7 that Will be offered at a reduced price. No matter what Vista costs , W7 will be reduced by half starting July 15th in your area (well, maybe not New Zealand) . BTW , I'm still looking if I can't find info. on your location before you leave . I have been able to find a place in New Zealand that will have W7 on sale but, no prices were available yet. Will keep looking and update if I find any prices on it.
In Canada "right now" from BestBuy.ca , Vista Business SP1 is $299.99 BUT, if you pre-order W7 Professional, it costs $124.99 (same as business for Vista). As you see , it Will cost less than half price for the time it is offered as a sale price.
That's the same deal you guys (gals) will get starting July 15th.( Europe) , until August 14th.
I will be looking for the price change in Europe when the 15th roles around.
OH My GOD !! I just remembered this from Microsoft. You have to be a Student at a College or University but this applies to ALL of the Countries that MS sells products in . This is the link for Germany.
http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/daswahr...
My German is a little rusty so, I hope you can read it LOL! But seriously this is No joke. I found this link when searching software for my youngest when she was in University last year. (Graduated this year from Ottawa U.) . Who knows, Maybe students can get W7 for allot less when it comes out.
I sure hope this link will help either you or someone you know.

The prices for Seven Pro will be the same as Vista Business though, at least in the US.
Thx for the link, I'm not yet a uni student though :-)
Maybe Something !!
Tue 07 Jul 2009 09:53:48 AM UTC — AthloniteOK FlyAqua, I found this article in one of Europe's biggest electronic magazine (so they say).
It's about W7 and the price for it is 50 Euros . Does that sound like a good deal ?
Like I said , my German is Very Rusty. Try the link and let me know what they say about it.

Tue 07 Jul 2009 09:56:32 PM UTC — FlyAquaHa ha ha, lol, thanks Athlonite.
Well I contacted the German Microsoft Store Support on Saturday and they have now (!) replied and also told me its €50.
It is indeed cheaper. Still, pay €16 more and you have the price you pay in the US for Professional.
Incredible, but maybe a price to pay...
(I wonder - we wait 4 days for a reply from MS. In the US we wait 4 hours. So if they give us less, why do they charge us more? =))
Anyway, thanks for your continued help.
Athlonite thanks..
Mon 06 Jul 2009 08:40:55 AM UTC — paul gYes your right PC World the Electronic Outlet UK. Thanks for your reply .That sounds great. I might take the chance and get the pre order then if its goin to make things better for me,and hopefully no blue screens when i install a program.
Thanks for your time........cheers.........p..........
