Am Ubuntu also, but
While I switched to Ubuntu from Windows about 6 months ago, and am very satisfied, I did have the Windows 7RC on a VM.
I was pretty impressed with what it had to offer above XP, but obviously not impressed enough to stay with Windows. Nevertheless, if you want to go to the dark side, Windows 7 would be the way to go.
And, that was an RC not the RM, plus there were some limitations to it on a VM . . . and I was still impressed anyway.
Are you planning on having it on a dual boot with Ubuntu? If so, be careful not to wipe out the Windows partition when you install Ubuntu.

Re: Windows 7 - is it worth upgrading?
In my opinion, Windows 7 is better (and especially faster) than Vista in every aspect and definitely worth the upgrade.

Yes—In My Opinion
In my opinion, yes, it is worth the upgrade.
I've been playing around with Windows 7 since it first hit beta and I had the RC on dual-boot for months (I finally took it off just to free up space). I encountered no major compatibility problems. I do, for the most part, like the new taskbar and interface.
In terms of performance, Windows 7 tended to use about 50-150 MB less RAM when idle than Vista. However, keep in mind that I didnt' have much installed under Windows 7. For the most part though it is lighter and faster.
Anybody here get a good feel for Snow Leopard?
The decision to upgrade/not upgrade is up to the user. :-)

It's pretty much the same as Leopard, but faster, I suppose. I haven't really noticed anything though...

...
Snow Leopard is Apple's way of redoing their OS, because Microsoft did. Apple did not do a very good job, and just a few tweaks and re-release are not worth it. I cannot tell the difference between the two, except that Snow Leopard has a slightly more enhanced security level, which makes it harder to develop applications for it.
Windows 7 has better security than Vista (probably 2% better), and better than XP, of course (45% better, in fact). Windows 7 design level is better, as it is lighter on the resources. Windows Aero has been redone, which supports more typical specifications. It now supports most current Intel Graphics Cards (especially 965 and 945). Before, it had full support for nVidia cards, and some support for ATI cards.
Honestly, the upgrade is based on preference. Windows 7 support is much better in the forum communities, however, Vista is still a good OS. The only reason why Vista is a good OS, is because if you disable UAC and Windows Aero - then get a good Internet Security Suite, your computer will run faster than expected. Thank you to all that have responded to my Q's.... Seeing that most of the coments are favourable and the upgrade is free... I am leaning towards giving it a go...
Once again thank you for your replys

Don't install too many
Don't install too many programs before installing the Windows 7 upgrade, or you will be in for a very long wait when upgrading.

YES - it is worth it
hey catweezl ,
I have upgraded from XP to 7 Ultimate and totally in love with it. I was about to move on to MAC and the 7 came along and is very impressed with what 7 has to offer. One thing for sure, you don't have to go all hassle to find the drivers now. It is all there! :D
cheers!

Do it!
As it is free do it, because you can always go back to vista, not that i would recommend that it. I am using Windows 7 as my main OS right now and i have to say i absolutely love it, its not broke or given up on me once, unlike vista.
it is defiantly worth the upgrade especially as it is free!

I'm not sure...
The Windows 7 had a huge problem with the chkdsk.exe, and after a while, it just corrupts the whole computer and it fails. So I'm not sure if they fixed it JUST yet, but I heard it's better, so yes, get Windows 7.

Yes!
I'm currently dual booting Windows Vista and Windows 7 RC and I tend to use Windows 7 more these days as the performance is much better. Especially booting up. Vista took me at least 3 minutes or so. With Windows 7, it took less than a minute.
As Hottwire said, "definitely worth the upgrade especially as it is free"

I've tried Windows 7 in a shop's event, and must say that, from the few minutes I had to play around with it, I like it a lot. When XP's compatibility ends, I am certainly upgrading straight to 7 and missing out Vista. I had Vista for three days and hated it; I can honestly say that Me crashed less.

Not upgraded to Vista yet
I haven't upgraded to Vista, let alone Windows 7. I'm still on XP.

yea I agree, vista sucks. so did ME...
I'm with you on XP Pro. Love the stability now although in the past, XP did chew itself to pieces after about 6-9 months of hard usage. That has changed with SP3 + updates + updates and even more updates. When was XP release anyways? I can't remember. I just remember ME sucked and vista did too. It's about time Microsoft did something right with Windows 7.

Windows XP was released in October 2001.

I can't believe i was using
I can't believe i was using windows 98 long after XP was released i was just hesitant to upgrade the same way I waited for a long time to go from XP to vista because of all the driver issues i kept reading about. The people at trianz were great when it came time to upgrade the office computers.

I'll wait for the OS to mature somewhat
I'll probably skip ahead directly to 7 from XP, but only after several months of real world shakedown. I don't think I'm alone.

Yes, yes, yes
Windows 7 is worth it!. I've actually skipped vista and stuck with XP Pro because of stability and horror stories I've seen and heard. Windows 7 I've read quite a few good reviews about and tried and love. Yes you will have application compatibility issues for a while but this will change. I would never, ever recommend installing any Vista version but Windows 7, you will not go wrong. I'd give it at least 3-6 months from it's release to allow the developers time to release patches for applications and for Microsoft to work out some of the initial bugs.

I'm still on XP when Vista
I'm still on XP when Vista came out i heard about all the driver problems and never upgraded and dont think i'll be going to Windows 7 anytime soon. My dedicated web hosting server though is running linux no surprise there.

vista vs 7
I'm still using XP. I bought a laptop after Vista came out, and I shopped around to find one that offered the option of getting it with XP instead. When my job added new PC's in 2008, they all had XP.
XP still has a huge market share 9 years after release, and that says more about how bad Vista is than how good XP is. OTOH, everyone I know who went from Vista to 7 is telling me I ought to ditch XP. So I'd say if your two choices are Vista and 7, it's a no-brainer.

Agreed
According to those who track this kind of information, XP still has a commanding lead:

delay in migrating to XP
Interesting that it took several years for XP to peak. You'd think people would have been ditching Me/98 like a hot potato.

Windows 7 - is it worth upgrading?
Just bought a new laptop " yippeee" it has an option to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to windows 7.....
I am not a real fan of vista but know nothing of windows 7....
Anyone upgraded to 7...? any problems ? Is it any better than vista ?
My old laptop had XP on it but it will soon have Ubuntu.... after I transfer all my data onto the newbie....
Any comments on windows 7 would be appreciated....
