    Layered Security

So I just finished Cotojo's Layered Defense video (nice video btw), I was wondering how to increase my security (since I feel hacked again =P).

Since I have Comodo Firewall and ESET NOD32 AV with me, what other active programs should I have with me? I have MalwareBytes and all, but should I include ThreatFire and Microsoft Security Essentials?

    Retired.

      goggle.com

Nah, I know about goggle.com a very long time, it's not THAT malicious. I was testing with "game" programs (crack programs/game modification programs, I do not pirate games/programs though, I buy em), and maybe it caused some problems.

Just MyWOT and SpywareBlaster, I guess... Found a malicious or fraudulent website? Rate it at WOT ASAP! Found a game hacker? Report it to the game's anti-cheat team! Infected with a virus? Delete it with an antivirus =P

    Hey Reprotected !!

What , if I may ask , is bringing upon you this "Feeling" of being Hacked ?
Is there evidence of this action ? Are your security programs reporting suspicious activities ?

You already have the best Paid For antivirus and if Comodo does not conflict with it then, you also have a Good firewall. MalwareBytes' is the best anti-malware but, I would recommend the Real Time module be activated. it will cost you $24.95 for a ONE TIME fee. Well worth the acquisition. You would then have Real Time protection against virus and malware plus Comodo to guard against "Hackers" .

The only addition I would suggest is SpywareBlaster to protect your browsers and WinPatrol to warn against changes made to the OS. Since both are Free, this would compliment well your layered protection.

I would , however , warn against TOO MANY security programs as they will only slow down your PC and will NOT add to what you already have.

I'm sure you also have Sandboxie which , is essential to conduct our business of rating sites . Sandboxie , even though it is not in servce, does have a process running all the time. So , too many , will decrease your surfing pleasure.

Scanning with MalwareBytes' at the end of every surfing session , before you close down for the night will help in protecting your interests (OS).

A weekly scan of your anti-virus should also reassure as to the cleanliness of the OS.
Cleaning of the Temps files and the deleting of Old Restore Points should also be considered . You can use the ATF Cleaner to clean out the Temp Files on a daily basis and the Restore Points on a Monthly basis.

IF you would like to clean out the registry then , there is only ONE place I would recommend. Live OneCare Safety Scanner. This is a FREE service from Microsoft :
    http://onecare.live.com/site/en-ca/center/cleanup.... .
The address above is the ONLY one you should use from this service. It will clean out the temp files and scan the registry for orphaned keys. There is a log for you to view BEFORE anything is deleted. The other options are already covered by your security programs thus, there is no need to duplicate. Don't forget , USE ONLY INTERNET EXPLORER to visit.

I hope this will reassure you that there is no need to be overly concerned.

      "Feeling"

I was using avast! with only Windows Firewall before ESET and Comodo Firewall.

Here is my story: So I left my computer on for the whole night, and on my download statusbar, I found 3 files (WMA) from a pornography websites that I did not download. They were not in my computer so I suspected I was hacked in some way. This event made me switch antiviruses and get a decent firewall.

Not only that, NoScript is blocking websites without my consent, but I think that is the ABE feature. My computer also runs with a weird noise that occurs once in a while, but that's probably my graphics card cuz I overclocked it.

I've done a "mega" scan with my computer, found almost nothing.

Just MyWOT and SpywareBlaster, I guess... Found a malicious or fraudulent website? Rate it at WOT ASAP! Found a game hacker? Report it to the game's anti-cheat team! Infected with a virus? Delete it with an antivirus =P

        RE : "Feeling"

I deduct from your reply that this hasn't happened since the New security has been put in place , correct ?

You can still leave your PC on if you wish. Simply "right click " on the internet icon on the task bar and choose to Disconnect then, put your PC to sleep for the night. This way , no one can access the .net through your PC. Or , just hit the OFF switch on the router if this is the way you acquire the internet.

Windows likes to be re-booted once in a while. This also purges the memory and reduces the amount of services that are running, sometimes needlessly .

IF it makes you Feel better , change your passwords on a regular cycle along with the password and SSID on the wireless router's module. It should throw off any attempt at trying to Guess your passwords to access the PC or other sites you store cookies for.

        Noise !!

If the Noise is coming from inside the PC and the hard drive is a bit on the Old side, it could indicate a failing HDD. The sound could be of scratching , clicking or a whizzing
noise. A whirling sound would be from a fan that is about to give. A good cleaning with a can of compressed air (IN SHORT BURSTS) could rectify some of the problems. Be sure to Ground yourself to the PC before going in and doing the actual work or , wear a Anti-Static wrist band. In any case , Unplug the PC from the wall outlet OR , the UPS (uninterruptable power supply) from the wall outlet if connected to one.

DO NOT spray the compressed air directly into the fan without holding the blades with a ball point pen (BIC pen) . Otherwise , the fan blades could be spinning too fast and burn out the bearings ,at which point , you Will have to change the fan if this happens.

Have you ever ran a chkdsk on your hard drive ? If not then , i would recommend you do one. It will take some time but, it will also help in determining if there should be cause for concern. If it is determined that there are no problems then, the PC will simply re-boot on it's own. If chkdsk finds any errors then, it will try and fix them . It will also have a log for you to review.

How to perform a chkdsk in XP :
        http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265 .

How to perform a chkdsk in Vista :
Go To > Start > Computer > Right Click on your HDD's letter and choose "Properties".
From the screen choose the "Tools" tab . The first option is "Error Checking" .
Click on the "Check Now" button. Accept the UAC prompt. The next screen will have two boxes to check mark. Fill both boxes and click on the "Start" button . You should now see a pop-up telling you that the next time you start your PC , chkdsk will perform a scan and attempt to fix any errors it finds. Re-Start your PC to start the procedure.

    Other tools.

Antivirus and firewall are a good start.

    You can add:

    - WindowsUpdate: Always install latest updates provided by Microsoft using the included WindowsUpdate tool.
    - Secunia PSI (free), to spot out-of-date and dangerous softwar (eg. old version of Flash player, Adobe PDF Reader...) : http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/
    - An generic anti-malware and antispyware ( http://www.malwarebytes.org/ is free and does a good job)
    - WOT, of course.
    - One per week, do a scan with a free online antivirus (choose a different one each week): http://www.mywot.com/wiki/Online_tools#Free_online...

    You should be 99,99% safe.

        if all the on-demand

if all the on-demand AV/AS/AM scanner fail then try winpatrol, autoruns, process explorer, revo uninstaller...

they should give u alot of detail (like startup location, company name, digital signature, dll...etc) & allow u to diasable/delete/search info online on every process, it make u easiler to spot & remove suspicious file/registry...

if u've clean registry/drive backup b4 u r infected, it'll be easier to restore if everying failed...

    my combo for fighting any

my combo for fighting any kind of viruses/malwares, any top brand internet security or AV
+ Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (best anti-malware for backing up ur AV)
+ SUPERAntiSpyware (best anti-spyware for backing up ur AV)
+ VirusTotal (u can download virustotal uploader & then upload any file not more than 10mb to virus total for analysis, it got 40 different AV online scanner to analysis 1 single file)
+ Revo Uninstaller (uninstall like normal but scan for left over registry & file/folder very accurately & then let u decide what to delete, got many useful feature like hunter mode-uninstall almost any program when u point to desktop/quicklanuch/system tray/toolbar icon, force uninstall, autorun manager & so on)
+ Web Of Trust (user-based site advisor w the abilty to block ad/spy/malware site w many option & more accurate than macafee site advisor/norton safeweb & so on)
+ Sandboxie (virtual program w many feature to protect u from hijacking, so far no virus/ad/spy/malware can break through this virtual thingy coz its virtual not real)
+ CCleaner (remove junk file/registry very accurately plus it've awesome cookie manager for u to keep all the wanted login cookie or remove all the unnwanted tracking cookie)
+ WinPatrol (super system monitoring program-alert new auto start entry/toolbar/any criticial system change plus backup b4 it even ask u yes or no & give u option to remove/disable/delete on reboot option which is what msconfig/taskmanager is missing)
+ Task Catcher (u need serials for it to be useful, watchlist-auto restart almost any process u want & blacklist-auto kill almost any process u want)
+ Unlocker (unlock any locked file/folder for u to delete it)
+ HostsMan (manage ur host file to block all the ad/spy/malware site which include their ads/script/cookie plus u can import/export/exclude/backup/download the hostfile & so on)
+ SpywareBlaster (add up ur empty cookie/restrict zone blocklist, system/host backup & so on)
+ ZonedOut (zone manager, better than IE/FF bulit-in as u can import/export/exclude in text file format but do not add too much restricted site, about 5000-6000 should do or else it'll slow down ur broswer/crash hijackthis scan)
    + ERUNT (to backup/restore registry)
+ Norton Ghost/Macrium Reflect (to backup/restore drive image or file & folder)
+ Recuva (to recover ur file/data if u didn't backup)
+ HijackThis (for expert only, to see system log file for analysis)
+ HashCalc (after u get the MD5 checksum, u can search virustotal instead of uploading every single file for analysis)
+ Update Checker (to see if ur program is up to date)
+ Autoruns (show u all the autorun entry & let u disable/delete/search online, best startup manager of its kind)
+ Autorun Eater (easily and automatically monitor and remove suspicious 'autorun.inf' files found in the root directory of drives C-Z even before you access the drive)
+ PeerGuardian (best IP blocker, their p2p blocklist is bad but their ad & spyware blocklist is awesome)
+ Process Explorer (show u all alot more detail & give u alot more option than than taskmanager, like show u the company name, .dll process, process tree, restart/suspend/search online for the process )
+ Any brand of recovery/rescue disc
= instant kill/recover to almost anything (provided u know how to use them properly w ur common sense...)

u can search through google for this software, it'll be at the top of the list for sure...

or u can search & download all the software here...
