    Inside MyWOT newsletter format

Since we started putting together the Inside MyWOT newsletter, we have only offered it as a PDF. I am not sure that it's the best way to go, so I am asking you all what you actually would prefer.

Some choices would be to stay with the PDF and change to or add plain-text or HTML email. There are advantages and disadvantages to all.

With the PDF version, we notify our subscribers that the newsletter has been published, give them a link, and hope that they have the time and inclination to click on it. One option is to attach the PDF file, but that idea is not too popular at WOT HQ.

With plain-text, it's simple and quick to download, but lacks creativity and could sometimes be too long. However, anyone with email can read it. A variation would be to send a digest style plain-text email with links and summaries of the stories.

HTML allows the use of graphics and interactive elements, but some readers prefer not to receive HTML emails, and some email software cannot display HTML email as intended, or even at all!

Thanks for your opinions and suggestions, and by the way, this month's newsletter is hot off the PDF press. Please read the October Inside MyWOT newsletter.

    Attach PDF file

It would be nice to have the PDF file just attached to the email, but if that idea "is not too popular at WOT HQ", then the current method is OK.

It would be very helpful to have it in two formats, HTML email and plain-text email, both with the PDF attached. In our account options, we could choose between HTML or plain-text newsletters.

    re: formats

IMHO the PDF format is best, but the use of www.scribd.com restricts viewing to their formatted screen.

My preference would be a simple plain text email with a link to the online version (as is) AND a link to download the PDF file directly so I could view at my leisure — all PC's that go online have a PDF reader now-a-days.

I personally am against HTML emails with graphics, unless it's personal to family or friends; tracking images and all, and with WOT being in the security field with advocating personal privacy... HTML seems like it would not be an option.

Microsoft users might prefer the Office format .DOC, my preference would be the Open Document standard of .ODT.

just a thought, and thanks for asking. :-)

    1. I think that the current method is good, but you should embed the PDF to allow a plugin handler to work with it rather than use Scribd. Downloads should allow at least PDF, maybe add ODT (don't bother with DOC or HTML).

    ...or...

    2. Send users a plain text email with a link to a webpage that is the newsletter itself. (i.e. the newsletter is a XHTML page, linked to from the email).

I prefer #2, because XHTML is much more faster and convenient than a memory-hogging PDF (especially at school with those low-spec computers, not so much a problem at home).

Just my 2c, and thanks for asking. :)
