Gold and powerlevelling services - Phish/Scams

I have been compiling a list of sites which have spammed World of Warcraft players (ingame) as well as other prominent forums to use their services. These sites run very high risks of accounts being hacked or scamming your. These services breech Blizzard TOS and anyone found to be using these services run a high risk of having their game accounts banned. Please rated these Red.

    List of domains/hosts:

    guy4game.com
    mail.guy4game.com
    wowyg.com
    wowgamelife.com
    mmo4store.com
    botsmall.com
    zyy.com
    k4gold.com
    wow-europe.cn
    storeingame.com
    hellogamegold.com
    gold4guild.com
    upowerleveling.com

I will add more as I find them.

    Blogged at: http://issviews.com/blog/?p=373

These sites are detremental to MMO games and players. They also break many TOS and lead to inflated markets, game instability, hacked accounts, ID fraud and so on. Blizzard explain more here: http://www.wow-europe.com/en/info/faq/antigoldsell...

Using an obese PC. I offer it a bit and it takes a megabyte.

    World of Warcraft

Is it my imagination, or is World of Warcraft particularly targeted by spammers and scammers? Although I don't play WoW, and have no interest in doing so, I have noticed that there seems to be a lot of scams associated with the game.

WOW has close to 12 million

WOW has close to 12 million online players which make this a very attractive game to hack accounts and phish for real money. It is a massive earner for spammers, phishers and hackers.

There is always someone in game who will buy gold or has done in the past. Many have been hacked and scammed but there is always new players ready to replace those that learnt a lesson from this.

      Yes. Consider that, the spam

Yes. Consider that, the spam amount is so big that, even in the in-game mail systems the developers have added a button for "Spam Report". Main spam generated for WoW is about power-leveling, gold-selling and Glinder bot software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glider_%28bot%29).

        Glider bot

The Glider bot software seems to be a copyright issue rather than a scam. Although the US Courts have repeatedly found that the Glider bot breaches WoW copyrights, the Glider bot distributors appealed to the US Supreme Court in September 2009. Does anyone know if the case has been heard yet, and if so, what was the judgement?

          Taken from Wikipedia:

"The court did not hold this view and found that Glider infringed upon Blizzard's intellectual property by making an illicit copy of the World of Warcraft client in order to avoid Blizzard's anti-cheating software, Warden, and ordered MMO Glider to pay Blizzard six million dollars." (http://www.wow.com/2008/10/01/blizzard-wins-6-mill...
Following the judgment, Blizzard petitioned to enjoin MDY from distributing Glider or releasing its source code. In March 2009, MDY suspended Glider sales and operations pursuant to an injunction. As of September 2009, MDY's appeal of the judgment is pending before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit."

I have underlined even the problem about Glider because the topic treated here could have even some "Ethical issues" if you think. Exacly, Power-Leveling and Gold-Selling are a way to obtain money doing nothing in exchange (virtual gold?).
Must be considered even the cases of Account HiJacking due to these scum-services and spreading of Glider with malware inside them.

    Two major reasons big-name

Two major reasons big-name MMOs are so heavily targeted:
    1. In-game items, currency and characters can be sold for money.
    2. Third party software often saves enough time that, even if the user knows there's a virus, they're more likely to ignore the threat.

Hi all; I just want to ask

    Hi all;

I just want to ask about these scam sites, are they safe to visit, i.e. load the front page, or are they likely to contain browser exploits, in addition to their obvious scams?

I ask because I try to visit sites I'm about to rate before applying, though I don't always. I remember some time ago I (or a forum I frequent, or both) got spammer by some slimeballs offering "Wow Powerlevelling" services. No clue what that is, but I figured it was some kind of scam.

      re: HI all ...

Many are safe in the sense of being free of malewar, though some have know to be simple lures to attempt to inject a Trojan.

The best thing to do when investigating phish/malware/spam domains is use good security. For example, I keep an updated OS, use an AV that is current with it's definition files, also intrusion detection, and browse via a sandboxed environment. So far, I have remained "clean."

A quick method would be check the scorecard first.
If some form of malware is present, you'll notice comments stating so.
