WOT Icon on Menu Bar is Missing

    Hi everyone,

I use Firefox 2.0.0.11. As I figure from the Rating websites video there should be an icon in the menu bar to rate websites. However, in my Firefox the icon is missing. What I have is an entry in the right-click context menu. Here's a screenshot: click me. Don't get confused by the German menus - I've highlighted everything that belongs to WOT in green. If I'm correct I should be able to rate trustworthiness and (if I choose so in the WOT options) vendor reliability, privacy and child safety. I've disabled child safety rating in the options. So the other three should be available. However, everything the right-click menu offers is a... let's call it "one-dimensional" rating. Plus menu entries to go to this website, open the options and enable or disable WOT.

I went through the options but didn't find an appropriate one to get the button. The closest hit is the "Recreate toolbar button if it gets removed" option in the Advanced tab. Though it didn't help. Perhaps because the button hadn't been removed - the problem seemed to be that it hadn't even been created in the first place.

I searched the forums for someone with a similar problem and came up with this thread where NiwoNull described what turned out to be a graphical bug with his Firefox theme. I use a different theme than the default one, too. Mine is called Winestripe. So I tackled that one as a possible source for the missing button. I switched back to the default theme and restarted Firefox but the icon was still missing.

That wasn't it. As you can see on the above screenshot I've modified my "chrome" - the area where Firefox displays toolbars, icons and menus. There's an article on lifehacker.com that explains how to remove unnecessary icons (here it is). The appropriate paragraph is the one titled "Remove disabled back, forward and stop buttons". In a nutshell, it explains how to change your userChrome.css file so that the Back button is only visible when there is something to go back to etc. I figured that this change might be the reason why WOT behaves the way it behaves. I reverted the changes to my userChrome.css and restarted Firefox - to no avail. The WOT button was still missing.

Then I figured that maybe the WOT button simply isn't displayed by default and that I'd have to drag it onto the menu. I went to View > Toolbars > Customize and looked for the WOT button. Here's a screenshot showing the Customize menu: click me. There are buttons - actually quite a few. But there's no WOT button available to drag onto the toolbar.

At this point I pretty much ran out of possible reasons for this behaviour. I tried a more absurd one. Maybe - just maybe - WOT didn't support anonymous rating. After all I had installed the add-on mere minutes ago and wasn't familiar with all of its features. Although I had the distinct feeling that rating anonymously was what the tool was all about. Anyways, I created an account on this website and restarted Firefox. But while that granted me access to more WOT options it didn't make the toolbar button pop up.

So here I am asking for help. I'd gladly accept any hints you can give me. I don't have any more clues why the WOT button is missing.

    Greetings,

    Sven

Re: WOT Icon on Menu Bar is Missing

    Hi Sven,

The add-on will attempt to add the WOT button to the "Navigation toolbar" in Firefox when installed. If the button is already present in another toolbar, it won't be added anywhere else, even if the "Recreate toolbar button..." option is selected. The problem is that if you have heavily customized your toolbars, the "Navigation toolbar" might not be visible in your configuration.

So, the first thing you should do is to browse through the hidden toolbars in your View -> Toolbars menu and see if the button is already in one of them. If you find it in another toolbar, you should be able to move it to a toolbar of your choice just like any other button. If the WOT button is not in any of the other toolbars, it should definitely have been in the "Customize Toolbar" window.

If the button is nowhere to be found, the reason is most likely not your theme or the userChrome.css changes, but probably a conflict with another extension or a corrupted Firefox profile. An easy way to test this is to create a new Firefox profile and install WOT there. If the button shows up in the new profile, something in your default profile is causing the problem.

    WOT Icon Found

That Did It! I had the Navigation Toolbar hidden, activated it and - lo and behold - there was the WOT icon! Sitting alone on the Navigation Toolbar.

    Thank you, Sami!

RE: WOT Icon on Menu Bar is Missing

I've never had the navigation toolbar hidden, and yet I still have this problem. On this particular page I do see the WOT icon in the address bar. However, when I switch to sites that have their own icon next to their address that apparently takes the place of the WOT icon.

RE: WOT Icon on Menu Bar is Missing

It sounds like you are confusing the favicon with the reputation symbol. If the toolbar button is missing, please make sure you have the add-on installed and try the solutions in the FAQ (depending on the browser you're using).
