    UPDATES !!

    Hey Everyone !!

It's that time of the Month again . I mean update time !
Java just released a New version so, if you use Java ,
it's time to update to version 6 update 13 Get it here:

    http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp .

You can do it manually or let Java take care of it. Just
remember to look in the Add / Remove to see that the Old
version is not there anymore. OR you can use :
    JavaRa : http://raproducts.org/ .

    Download Windows Binary (.zip file)

to take care of the older versions

Also MalwareBytes Anti-Malware has been updated to version
    1.35 definitions 1915.

    Secunia Inspector !

Absolutely true ,YoKenny. it is a very good tool to have as well . You can download the
standalone tool from Secunia at no charge to the Home user. I use it once a Month after the MS updates.

    F-Secures software checker !

F-Secure also offers a free software check:
    http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/onlineservice...

F-Secure Health Check is a free online service which

Checks whether you have an Anti-Virus, Firewall
and Anti-Spyware software installed on your computer.
Checks whether you have known vulnerabilities in your applications.
Checks whether you have applications that are no longer supported by the vendor.
Helps you fix the vulnerabilities found.

    System requirements

    Windows XP, Windows Vista 32-bit
Processor: Intel Pentium III 600 Mhz (minimum)
Memory: 256 MB of RAM (minimum)
Internet Explorer 6 or newer, ActiveX and Javascript enabled

      Not working !!

      Phantazm ,
I wanted to try this software checker but , it won't support IE8 well , the online scan says this about system requirements :

      Supported web browsers:

      * Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0.
      * Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.
      * JavaScript needs to be enabled.
      * You need to have ActiveX enabled.

No IE8 support for online scanner so , I guess this is why the software checker won't work for me .

Have you updated to IE8 and have you tried this checker yourself lately ?

        Still got IE 7

Athlonite: "Have you updated to IE8 and have you tried this checker yourself lately ?"

No, I've still got IE 7; I'll rather wait some more untill their product is less new and more stable. But in IE 7 F'secures checker works fine. I'm not sure about the global stats, but on my own site 50-60% of visitors use IE7. and less then 1% use IE8...

          Work Around !!

          OK Phantazm ,
I found a work around and it worked just fine. I used Firefox and when I got to the F-Secure site I clicked on the IE Tab : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/141....
I guess this plug-in is still using the IE7 engine because all I had to do is, accept the ActiveX (in firefox LOL!) and the Checker started it's scan. I got the results that I anticipated . All except Firefox is patched. I'm still using Firefox 2.0.0.20 but, that's another story.

For now, your link should work just fine as long as you have IE7 or the IE Tab in Firefox.

I can't complain about IE8. As a matter of fact , I stopped using IE7 because of it's bugs. IE8 is much faster and (on my system, Vista) doesn't crash anymore. But, as I keep finding out , Allot of sites don't recognize it yet as the latest and greatest from MS.

            IE Tab

Athlonite, thanks for reminding me! I already have IE Tab, but had almost forgotten. I think my reason to include IE Tab was, that I maybe then could discard IE completely. However, I later read that IE Tab relies upon IE to be present on the computer. And in that case...

              You cannot !!

              Hey Phantazm !

You can't discard IE !!! Since Internet Explorer is a integral part of your OS , IE cannot be deleted. Sorry , yes you can but, with a certain Application that is just too dangerous for me to disclose it. That's why we use the IE tab . In reality , what this add-on does is , it uses the IE engine that's already in the OS. But , this is very useful as you don't have to use IE at all. I even used it for updates in XP on the MS site. Now , that I have Vista , I don't have to visit MS updates as all of the updates are through a process directly within Vista. So, if you do have this add-on , I would suggest you make good use of it and avoid using Internet Explorer if that's what you want.

MS is hard to get rid of

Well, I'm not too surprised; MS is hard to get rid of.
But if I've understod you correctly, then
IE within FF is still more secure..?

IE within FF is still more secure..?

No, using IE that's embedded in Firefox is not any more secure than running IE itself.

                  Secure !

                  Phantazm,
As Sami stated , you are still using the IE engine and if you take a look at my previous post , I mentioned that I Still had to accept a ActiveX control. BUT, you are only using IE for that page and only that page , Once you end that connection , you will still be in FF.
Since you are on a secure site (Not https though) and know the vendor, I think the risk is worthwhile.

      not tried

didn't try, I have IE8 as well and after reading decided not to hit the URL.
but this is an online scan, kind of like "outside in"...
Secunia offers a download, so it's done from the "inside out"
I would trust inside out more and less chance for outside sources to become compromised.
      Also...
why is the F-Secure link not a secure link (https)?

      Hey Paul !

      My pleasure !!!

Very nice PC BTW. No need to be paranoid Paul. If you have Vista installed then, you have nothing to worry about as this Bug doesn't affect this OS. Just be a little more diligent when surfing and you will be fine

    Also...

FileHippo have a small program that scans for programs that need updating, once run it will open a browser window showing the programs with updates and download links, works well with Secunia PSI.
It's in Beta but I have been using it with no problems and updating is simple.

      Prefer !

      Hey Colin !!

I prefer using the Secunia PSI for the simple reason that you don't have to open a browser window to download the updates. Secunia will download them for you and you can either install or save the downloaded update.
When the scan finishes and the report suggest that you should update a certain program , you have the opportunity to , update , open the parent folder , ignore program , Delete the program , technical details and a few other options .
In my opinion , this a well put together program with lots of help options.
But, I guess that , the more help you can get the better. That's why we are all here Right ?

        Filehippo

        Hi Paul,

I am still using FileHippo along with Secunia PSI and it does find some that PSI doesn't.

There is no reason to lose trust with filehippo because they decided that Comodo contained adware, softpedia also warn that ZoneAlarm contains adware.

They are only affiliate download sites and the majority do state that all programs are spyware/adware free, but after much debate filehippo declared that comodo was adware on its free version because of the reminders to upgrade to the full version.
