    XP Smoker 5.5

OK , I haven't tried this one yet well, I'm now in Vista and just found out about this app. However, there is one for Vista also. I will be checking the Vista one this Week-End.
But , for now , if you think you can benefit from a little more speed from XP then , you might want to try this :

    Athlonite.

    Sceptical

I have always been sceptical of those utilities that say they can do tweaks automatically that will "speed" up your machine . . . especially when they make a reference to tweaking the registry, like this one does in the very first sentence.

Though I'm just coming off a bad experience with something like this, so I might be biased right now.

For years I resisted the temptations to try these "quick fixes", but in the days of W95 I did try a few and that's where my scepticism started. W95 was unstable to begin with, and my trials of things like Oil Change, Nuts and Bolts, Clean Sweep etc., only made it more unstable.

And eventually, Microsoft incorporated a lot of those ideas into their OS until today we have something with a lot of maintenance utilities that weren't there in the early iterations.

In any case, I recently broke down and on the advice of an experienced user I tried TuneUp 2009. It totally toasted my machine. I couldn't figure out how to revert back and use a backup that I assume it made because I did find some files in the TuneUp directory that looked like backups that could be restored. I looked all over the GUI and didn't see anything about restoring.

And of course I Googled but no joy there either.

So then I tried some OS restore points, and they were somehow screwed up too.

I've since recovered by tediously troubleshooting (long story and long time, with a lot of GOM expletives), but that whole experience has simply reaffirmed my scepticism of these "speed up" utilities.

Indeed, these things may work for some and I wouldn't necessarily condemn them out of hand for everyone (though I WOULD do that for these scam registry cleaners), but they didn't work for me.

I can't really say this thing doesn't work because I haven't tried it . . . and probably won't right now until and unless the memory of my latest disaster fades completely.

With that said, I do hope that this thing works good for you, Athlonite.

    Let us know.

    For $19.99 I'll pass

There are plenty of good FREE tuneup applications available like xp-AntiSpy to remove 'Suspicious' functions in XP and TweakNow WinSecret Professional that is free for home use:

    Trial version

Fortunately I didn't buy the stupid thing . . . it was just a trial version. Needless to say I didn't buy it . . . the trial was enough to convince me of that.

As a rule, I never buy anything outright. If it has a trial version, then I may try it to see if its worth the money. Most are not, and a free alternative, as you say, is usually the way to go if you want the functions.

    Freebies work

WinPatrol, sysinternals, regprot, and by using them I know what is running, what I have disabled and if something new tries to appear WinPatrol will spot it and if it tries to modify the registry regprot picks it up.

    Smile, it's the weekend (almost)
