    Same Update Daily

ok got an email from my mother in PA. she's using windows XP, service pack 2. she uses her puter to email us down here - my sisters, neices, nephews & such - reads local paper online, does some minor searching - and visits web md. no more no less. the email i got from here follows:

Why is my Windows updating my puter every day for a month now with the same doggone update? #KB967715 ?? I went on the website for the updates...and there they are listed as successful updates...same as on my Add-Remove list. I have shut down the Automatic Updates and they did stop...but I don't want to keep it shut down...what with this Conficker Worm sneaking around now.!!

her system and mine are both basically the same as i run windows xp also with service pack 2. my system doesnt update same file everyday for a month. anyway i know she hasn't added anything - downloads & such - she isn't that type of person. i for the life of me cannot figure out whats up. any ideas?

    I had that

When I looked into it through Windows Update it was always 0kb and 0mins to download, so I clicked the + sign to expand it and ticked the 'Don't show this update again' box.

    Hope that helps :-)

    KB967715

KB967715 (to download and install manually) = Disable Autorun.
or... simply hold down the SHIFT key when placing a CD into the ROM drive or a stick into the USB Port.

IMO, you both should update to SP 3 and *all* the following security related updates that follow.

When was the last time you tried SP3?

Initial SP3 updates had problems with AMD processors but that has been fixed a long time ago.

It is the systems that do not have SP3 that Conficker loves to infect as they are such easy targets.

        Source?

I haven't read anywhere that Conficker favors SP2, only that if that October 2008 MS patch is missing. And SP2 took that patch.

I'm upgraded to SP3 now (which is a whole 'nother story), so it really doesn't matter for me anyway. But I'm curious . . . where did you see that Conficker favors SP2?

          Conficker

Only infected systems that were not patched with the October patch.

New variant includes a Rootkit and a new worm, Downad.E, Conficker has been replaced with these and will disappear by early May according to reports.
Users who download SpywareProtect2009 will also be infected with the new variants, not necessarily Conficker!

    Well

Neither of you should have Service pack 2 if you can help it. Service pack 3 has security updates.
Also, your mother asked about Conficker. Having the same update downloaded isn't the work of Conficker. Conficker blocks access to Windows update altogether, as well as thousands of security vendor's websites. if you want more information on Conficker, see here: http://groups.google.com/group/mywot/web/conflicke...

    http://bedbugznest.net/

been awhile since i tried SP3 - so - earlier today after my previous post about the probs i had - i got the update for SP3. after update it asked to restart so did. there the prob started.

went into boot mode - went into windows screen then went to: there was a prob with ur last shutdown. do u want to start in safe mode, safe mode w/networking, last known configuration that worked or normally.

it lets me go into safe mode, yet when i restart i get the same screen. where do u want to start? the other 3 just recycle back to which mode do i want to start.

sooo with that said - i went into safe mode and restored system to yesterday. any ideas y system duz this? specs of system:

windows XP, version 2002, service pack 2, amd athlon 64 processor 3500+, 984 mhz, 896 mb of ram

      update online

did you use Windows online update?
it works very well, start with SP3 and only SP3.

oh yeah, if you have a pirated copy of Windows, www.windowsupdate.com does work very well and neither does the direct download. There are ways around that, which some friends of mine do/use, but my copies are "genuine" so I can't guide you much there.

      Just a thought

I have noticed that to install the SP3 on some machines I have had to disable the firewall and antivirus whilst it installs. I had the same problem on one of my machines and a few friends had the same thing happening, disabling security seemed to have cleared whatever was blocking it from installing properly.

yup always use windows update. system is genuine windows install - original version when i bought system bout 5 yrs ago.

nope did not disable firewall/antivirus. am using windowns firewall w/AVG antivirus. mayhap i should goto win update site again & try installing SP3 w/firewall & antivirus disabled?

edit: just a ?? - 'start with SP3 & only SP3' meaning - install SP3 first/before any other updates? i've got all the updates pertaining to SP2 except IE7 & SP3. dont really need IE7 since i use firefox anyway.

      direct

Here is Athlonite's patch, direct from Microsoft
I tend to be leary of other sites passing MS patches you just never know who had their fingers in it, if you know what i mean.

Good lookin' out Athlonite, many peeps just assume MS + Intel inside. :-)

went to win update site - goto page to download SP3 - here's what it says:

Download size (total): 0 KB *
Estimated time at your connection speed: 0 minutes *
    (*Downloaded; ready to install)

wonder if that mite be a prob causing recycle at boot up? [edit] said same thing yesterday when i updated to SP3.

    @ BedBugZ

Have you tried to download the patch mentioned by Athlonite and g7w or checked in Add / Remove to see if it is there?

Clean your temp files out and reboot, download the installer I mentioned earlier and try to download SP3 otherwise download the iso image , burn it to CD and install that way.

It is saying 0kb 0mins because the necessary installers have already been downloaded, which is why you need to clean your temp files.

    Scru It?

    BedBugZ Nest Of Noise:
    http://bedbugznest.net/

this is so disgusting! got the amd patch. shows up in add/remove progs as: MSXML 4.0 SP2 [KB954430]. as for windows installer, tis usually in add/remove progs but is not there now. when i goto the link provided in previous post here, there is a list of files to install. how duz one know which one to get? am assuming i would get: WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe.

as for patch KB953356 - i downloaded/installed it but it duz not show up in add/remove progs either!

am bout ready to say scru it - leave well enuf alone?!!! have had no probs with attacks, virus's & such on SP2 - but even so - would be better off with SP3 all in all. tis just so disgusting trying to get it to actually do anything but recycle boot.

    Windows Installer Scroll

Windows Installer Scroll down and it's the last one:

    WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe

Also might be worth opening My Computer, right click C drive > Properties > Tools > Error Checking and tick the first box and let it check for errors, alternatively you can check both boxes and reboot so that it can also scan for bad sectors

    Malwarebytes MBAM

    Some malware prevents installing SP3.

Try to download Malwarebytes MBAM then run its install program mbam-setup.exe then run the application and update its definitions then run a Quick scan and let it remove whatever it finds and a reboot may be required to remove locked files.
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

If you can't run MBAM then your system is infected.

    OK !

OK , I know I'm going to get some flak for this but, since you've tried just about every possible action to optimize your copy of XP. I would suggest you Don't install SP3. After all, since MS did offer you the SP3 through the Automatic Update module, it thought your PC was capable of accepting SP3 and installing without any problems.
This might be due to some hardware or even a driver not being up to date. It would be a very long process to actually diagnose and correct such problem. If you are willing to spend the time then, and there is no guaranty , you might be able to install successfully SP3.
XP will be supported by MS until 2014 with monthly updates so, I wouldn't worry too much about SP3. The only draw back would be if , you wanted to install a third party program and the requirements would be SP3 . Otherwise , I would not go through any more trouble than you already have.
And NO , I am NOT a proponent of "If it ain't broke , don't fix it."
It is obvious that BedBugs did what had to done to try and install but , could not.

    Athlonite.

definitely no flak from me! as the old adage states: 'if it isn't broke, don't fix it'! needless to say the 3rd attempt to install SP3 failed - just caused system to do that recycle at boot - hell if i wanted to recycle i'd save bottles, cans & such!! lolol - anyway - aint gonna mess with it anymore. have had no probs to date - sooo y fix what aint broke!
