Call to battle cybercriminals is issued

Collaboration among the information security industry is the way to defeat cybercriminals

Yesterday at the opening of the RSA Conference, a huge security conference held in San Franciso, keynote speaker Art Coviello called on the security industry to join forces in the battle against cybercriminals. He characterized Internet fraudsters as the most organized, purposeful and effective group of security experts in the world.

"Fraud threatens the very existance of the entire information eco-system" and he called on vendors to fix the "perilous" gaps dogging security implementations together.

"It cannot be solved by a suite of products from a single vendor. It must be solved by the vendor community," he said. "In the web 2.0 world, we have seen the power of mash-ups - so why not in the security world?"

Microsoft's Scott Charney, corporate vice-president of Trustworthy Computing, said he was confident the industry would come together, "I think when you have a common enemy, which is what the cybercriminal is, it really galvanizes organizations to work closely together."

The WOT community is a powerful force

This call to action inspires us here at WOT. Our community of users is a powerful force in this ongoing cyberbattle, and growing more effective with each new person that comes aboard. Together we are an "organized, purposeful and effective group" who can make a positive impact every time someone conducts a search, transacts business or surfs randomly on the Web.

We are renewing our committment to making the Internet safer for everyone. We hope you will too. WOT is great for warning about risky sites, but without your participation we lose our strength. Please join us today, and make an effort to add your ratings and comments to a few new sites.

Mr Coviello was optimistic and confident that by joining forces the prospect of success would increase. He concluded, "There's an African proverb that advises, 'If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together'."

    Government Intervention

Hopefully, this sentiment will go against any government intrusion into the cybersecurity arena.

    Unified action

I really hope that the industry is doing more than paying lip service to the topic of cybercrime and Internet security. If one looks, one can find the sentiments Mr. Coviello expressed at RSA being said in more and more places.. so there's hope.

But I don't see things truly getting better before they get worse (the whitehats are playing a "catch-up" game, and came to the party late) and so -- until that fundamental change in technology occurs -- it is up to us 'regular folk' to protect ourselves.

The WOT add-on/plug-in is a very simple to use and understand tool for doing this, and active participation by us (by entering our ratings) only makes it more effective. Not only do we (who know about this wonderful, free tool) need to pay attention to the warnings it provides -- we need to tell our friends and neighbors about it.

    Cybercriminals

They are on the increase in huge numbers, the days of a 'spotty faced geek sitting in a basement' are long gone. Now they are well organised gangs of criminals, and it is a very lucrative business for them, and once their site is blacklisted they simply shift to another domain.

The security companies need to collaborate more to erase these threats which range from phishing to fake programs with malicious content.

The WOT community has a major impact upon the 'bad' sites and it is a long process trying to keep up with them, finding a bad domain and then the sub-domains that link to it etc.

The cybercriminals will stop at nothing and security vendors need to pull together and assist in removing these scourges from the internet.

WOT itself does a marvellous job, the community is strong and works well, each user having the option to add their own opinion and comment for sites as they find them. It's modern, it works and the number of online users is increasing.

      Re: Cybercriminals

Doesn't help that near-complete anonymity is much easier to pull off on the internet than in real life.

    We are a very powerful

We are a very powerful community that shares information to safe guard others. I blog about security daily and it amazes me how much wrong doing is out there.

    One Who Is Bitten

I am a victim..... As of today and the past 3 years they inhabit my pc....no one believes me and I can't shake them. Help me if you can.

Identity fraud, 5 computers completely taken over, and again they are back. I use every kind of spyware, antivirus, malware, rootkits, etc. They steal my programs, break down my programs and make them available to other countries. They use keyloggers and remote control. Sure I disable these features.....they live inside, ha ha, remotely.

    Suggestions?
