    Hey Paul !

I will not recommend Comodo. Some have had success with it but , it seems that it is a bit tricky and finicky at times.

The one you have now PC Tools Firewall Plus is the one I use and recommend for Vista. Online Armor is now available for Vista. it has only been available for Vista in the last couple of weeks. IT IS by far the BEST in it's class of FREE firewalls :

    http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-so... .

It has the best leak test of all free firewalls. Naturally , it won't have all the options that the Paid version has but, it still is the best one to protect your investment.

I have been using PC Tools Firewall Plus for the last year now in Vista and can only say that, I am very satisfied with it's performance. I was very limited in my choice of firewalls when I opted to get Vista and PC Tools was one of only a handful to be offered as a free program.

So , it's your choice, PC Tools or Online Armor. BUT, not Comodo.

    Athlonite.

    Your help is always needed.

    five good free firewalls

    Hi Folks,

Many good firewalls, I agree on Online Armor Free (excellent). Superb software.

Also reasonable is Outpost Firewall Free (which recently came back in the mix) , Sunbelt (which took over the old Kerio), Zone Alarm, PC Tools and a few others. I think those five mentioned all have free versions. Also for Vista, the Sphinx option mentioned above, which I think is enhancing the Vista firewall ?

To be clear, Comodo is technically a good firewall, they simply are hurting themselves by bundling a crapware toolbar that you have to untick to avoid hassle. And they are doing it in an especially tricky and arrogant manner which is discussed at Wilders and Softpedia and even in the Comodo forums and elsewhere. It is true that even with the firewall you would not want their anti-virus and you have to play with the settings since in the more aggressive settings it is very annoying (however, that is not surprising).

Since there are about five or more good free firewalls, you stick with any one of the programs and companies that are concerned with integrity and their reputation. For more details, you can wade through Wilders Security Forum, which is quite a resource on tech security discussion. Note that if you want to up the ante a bit, their is a $15 discount on the Online Armor paid version, with code OAFEB, mentioned in Wilders. (Something to think about, they have great support.)

Even while criticizing Comodo, I do want to be fair and point out that the firewall itself is technically quite competent. The reason I cannot recommend their firewall is their selling out to the crapware toolbar with a default install where you have to decipher and opt-out. Nope, you don't need security software trying to foist crapware. And then they made it worse when they tried a "cease-and-desist" legal bluster against Softpedia for properly simply labeling their software adware (consistently, as they do with CCleaner and others) instead of freeware. Very aggressive of Comodo, very dumb.

    Shalom,
    Steven Avery
