Spammers Cashing in on Swine Flu

Worried about Swine Flu? If so, don’t let your fear and anxiety dupe you into clicking dubious links in emails. Spammers are increasingly using Swine Flu in subject lines and messages to take advantage of people’s fears of the rapidly-spreading Influenza strain, according to McAfee’s Advert Labs Blog.

    Spam/swine flu

I know it's not that funny given the situation, but someone elsewhere remarked about the "irony" between the two words of spam and swine flu.

    troubling

    This has been troubling me.
I've been working on some lists of domains: "good, bad, and uncertain"

F-Secure has posted on their weblog, including a list of domains that were hurriedly purchased last weekend, some are parked, so it would be unfair to assume they have ill intent. (tried to make a pun there), while others are definitely malice; this is one of the lists I'm working on sorting out.

I've seen the avertlabs page quite an extensive post listing. There is also Dancho Danchev's Blog post, Spamvertised Swine Flu Domains that has an enormous domain listing (blacklist) that is safe for WOT users to rate very poorly (RED) just link back to the blog page as reference.

    F-Secure list

I've noticed the list F-Secure presented has been mass-rated RED already.
That's a shame, I've been going through it, slowly, resolving whois, ownership, ips (dedicated versus shared) and some genuine sites are rated improperly; here's one for an example:
    http://www.fightswineflu.com

This is a simple, yet aesthetically pleasing WordPress Blog that shows current news on the topic; from the About page:
I have set this site up as a hub for news and information about the recent outbreak of H1N1 Swine Flu. Please contact me with any links you would like me to post or if any of the posted links contain information that is incorrect or outdated.

    whois
    Created: 2009-04-26
    Expires: 2010-04-26
Registrant Search: "Andrew Hook" owns about 74 other domains

(I really need a good domain registrant search tool *sigh*)

As F-Secure stated on their blog, "Remember, this post notes the creation of opportunistic sites, not malicious ones."
In other words, this is not meant as a blacklist, it was merely an observation.

FYI, many of these domain names were purchased as an investment with one intent: to have, to sell. They reside on parking pages and have no useful content, they should not be rated by WOT for they are neither "good" nor "bad" sites, should a rating exist, then it should be fair at "Good" with either "other" or "useless" comments. IMO, any existing poor ratings should be deleted along with comments.

When I get finished with my list of 150-200 domains, I'll post them grouped to my findnigs. It will be awhile though, that's a long list to dissect.

    /me looks at hpHosts

I've only got 1 site listed at 208.97.146.12 in the database and it doesn't look legit to me ..... though it's classification does need changed.

I have however, went through the rest of them and removed the parked domains.

    Certain or suspicious..?

g7w: "this is not meant as a blacklist, it was merely an observation."

Good point! Let's be absolutely sure if a list contains certified scams,
or only suspicious sites that might be bad...

    g7w: "some genuine sites are rated improperly;
here's one for an example: www.fightswineflu.com"

I hope you'll make a list of misrated sites, so we can correct the error...

      so far

So far, what I've discovered is that there is not 1 domain that could be classified bad/red, most are parked and for sale (people trying to buy domain names for profit - nothing wrong about that it's called investment), others are genuinely concerned blogs, and others redirect to already established and reputable sites.

It will take some time - I've already used up my allotted anonymous usage at domaintools.com and have to login to do more, LOL.

When I am done, I shall post a list of "not rateable | redirect (with siteName.com and my opinion) | Good/Excellent" categories. The only one's who'll have a hard time are those that have used F-Secure's list as mass-rated; they'll have to go through their myRatings pages and delete entries, 1 by 1. (there about 130 domains just on the F-Secure list). And hpHosts will have to resolve their blocklist as well.

g7w: "The only one's who'll have a hard time are those that have used F-Secure's list as mass-rated; they'll have to go through their myRatings pages and delete entries, 1 by 1."

Isn't it possible merely to repeat the massrating procedure,
        and simply overwrite earlier ratings/comments..?

          parked domain

a parked domain merely means that a name has been purchased
it's not active, it has no meaning.. it's just a name, that's for sale; a "place marker."
There is no "site" so how can you honestly rate the "name?"
You could change an existing rating from red to green and a comment from spam to good site - but parked domains are neither, they should not be rated (judged) until they have a site that gives them merit, good or bad, or somewhere in between.
To remove comments, you must open the scorecard and delete it.
To remove ratings you must open you My Ratings tab in Profile, scroll to the domain listing and click the little red X - the mass rating tool offers no mass-removals to correct mass mistakes; though it probably would be a good enhancement.

[ ] delete all comments and ratings
placed under the [ ] don't delete existing comments

Mass rating confirm hard to find

Maybe you could also look at the final message when mass rating. After clicking "submit" at the bottom at the page, nothing seems to happen... until you notice at the top this message "Thanks, X comments and ratings have been submitted"...

The position is somewhat un intuitive, could you reconsider it..?

re: Spammers Cashing in on Swine Flu - revisited

The F-Secure list of quickly acquired domains have
all been mass-rated red in WOT and included in hpHosts.
IMHO, this was wrong, it was too early to tell any "status" of these domains.

One domain name has actually been deleted and is available for purchase:
    swine-flue.info

I found 7 sites to rate RED:
(links to atlanticdrugs.com a verified ROGUE Pharmacy)
    swine-flu-symptoms.com
    swine-flu-vaccine.com
    symptoms-of-swine-flu.com
    surviveswineflu.com

(loads drugdelivery.ca a verified ROGUE Pharmacy)
    swineflutreatment.net

(fraud - nothing to do with h1n1 / swineflu)
    swinefluforum.org
    swineflusymtoms.com

    I rated Orange:
(site concentrates on offsite "pandemic kits" sold at outrageous prices.)
    swineflukits.com
    swineflukits.net
    swineflumasks.net
    swineinfluenzaa.com (framed/loads swineflusymptom.com)

Abandoned / unfinished templates (orange rating - possible spam abuse?)
    swineflusymptom.com
    swineflublog.org (redirect to swineflublog.wordpress.com)
    swinefluresources.com
    swineflulabs.com
    swineflus.info

198 Domain names that are not rateable (blocks of 50):
purchased solely for the intent to resale
nothing malicious about them, most all have parking pages
some simply show 403 error or does not resolve (no DNS allocation)
a couple have a Word Press template with no content.

Another F-Secure list of purchased domain names

This list is much larger, 1,344 domain mentioned.

Let me point out that this is not a blacklist.
      As they have mentioned
none of the domains we've checked are hosting any malicious files.

I checked 5 random sites - they are all parked and for resale.

        dirty laundry?

What's "dirty" about buying a domain name?
7 out of over 225 came out red, approximately 3% maybe 4% if you include my opinion for orange - not all that bad.

      OOI .....

.... on what basis did you determine those you rated as excellent/good, actually deserved such rating?

by taking time to browse each and everyone, determine who the owner is via WhoIS search; grouping their purchases together (there were no 1 domain per owner groups), and visiting the sites they link to, how well the author put the site together, if the information presented was valid, and how current the updates were made.

Realize that this took me a week to evaluate these domains - I'm not about to check the second list of over 1,300 domain listings - most all of them are parked as well.

WOT users, and especially hpHosts since it is used as a Trusted Source should be responsible enough to .validate their Ratings. If not, then WOT loses respectability.

By all means, visit each domain individually yourself and rate accordingly.

    Its a sad day...

when people will advertise fake things to scam people, using something that can get people killed in some circumstances
