    rating activity

I just signed up and have been rating a few sites as I browse but my "sites rated" remains at 0. Is this something that takes a while to show up or am I doing something wrong? Thanks!

    It's updated once a day.

    Takes time

Rating a site takes time before the effect is visible. If you are the first to rate, usually nothing will happen (yet). Furthermore, the higher reputation you have, the more effect of your votes.

Actually there are two numbers involved: Your 'activity' is a public number but it's not identical to 'trust', as that is not public (thus harder to manipulate).

    PS: Try to seach the forum next time you have a question;
the answer may already exist in an older thread... ;-)

      Well...

I think that after you rated / commented, you must refresh the browser to have immediate effect. (Only after all the members statistics at WOT have been updated.)

    re: rating activity

Your ratings are, as Sami mentioned, updated to your username / public profile once a day. However, the tab that says "My Ratings" is current in real time so you can verify both your ratings and comment totals.

you'll always see your last rating as the first (top) in the list.

Re: Rating totals but no comment totals

The "Posts" field tells you the total number of posts you've made, including scorecard comments.

@ Timo - Comments and Posts

Maybe change the current label from "Posts" to "Comments and Posts" which should eliminate confusion by implying a combined total.

              RE: Comments and Posts

Sorry for the late reply. Unfortunately we can't change the "Posts" text to "Comments and Posts" since we don't have translations for the new text. Thanks for the suggestion.

Comments and posts are the same...except that posts include what you post in the forum or blog too.

    Does (dis)agreeing also count..?

If I post a comment, it should count as 'one more post'.
    But what if I agree or disagree to a post;
    how does that count..?

    • User picture
      • g7w on Fri 22 May 2009

      maybe it doesn't

incrementing your "post" count when you didn't post, but disagreed or agreed with someone else.. would be a form of plagiarism..

        Depends

I think it could depend on how you look at it.
If someone already posted a comment,
        1) somewhat long, and also
        2) precisely what I could say.

Then I could be tempted to simply agree to the existing post.
Instead of writing the same thus doubling the size,
        without adding any new information...

Plagiarism was not my intention (but of course somebody else might...)
Anyway, I was not defending the possibility, merely
wondering how or if agreement counted...

          Plagiarism

maybe the wrong choice of word...
I suppose I meant that if you took the time to write a comment, a "critique" it's "your work" why should I get credit as if I wrote it simply because I "approved" or "disapproved" it.

Advice about activity points and metal-colour levels

    Dear WOT Members,

Some people have been asking about how to get activity points, what counts and how much. I urge you not to worry about it. Ask yourself, why are you ranking sites? For most of us we are trying to do our bit to make the world a better place. Some would say they are doing God's work or winning merit for the next life. However you explain your devotion to helping others it should not be for "activity points". There is no cash payment for activity points and no fame. It is best to stay somewhat anonymous so personal glory at having a high rank is nonexistent. Instead you will get messages from people complaining that you gave a negative rating to their site. We rate sites to make the world a better place and not for personal gain.

It is easy to find sites to rate. Just check out the URLs you get sent in spam. There is a certain amount of personal satisfaction in getting back at criminals who have just sent you spam. Just try not to cackle too loudly, "Revenge is mine, Hahahhah..." or your concerned wife will take you away from your computer and talk to you about internet addiction. You can find one type of site that really annoys you and hunt them down on Google. There are many sites with fake anti-virus software, fake medicine, fake universities, racists, pornographers, narcotic dealers and so on. It is always 'open season'. Also you should find all the sites that you know to be benevolent and give them a good rating.

Some people on WOT have taken great care and time to investigate unknown, but possibly legitimate sites. Others have gained far more points by rating many more clearly undesirable sites. (I am one of those.) Perhaps people should get more activity points for posting comments when a request has been made. Also perhaps people should not get activity points for rating sites that already have many many ratings. In the end it does not really matter all that much. We look to make the internet and the world a better place. We all know that people like G7w, Cod head, Creastery, Bobjam, Cotojo ... and many others do a lot of good work and really know internet security well. If you aspire to be more like them you will learn a lot along that road.

Keep a real objective in mind.

    Yours

    PHung

      More

Phantazm AND your own name. You're not too shabby yourself when it comes to ratings. In fact, you're number 2 on the list of most active users. My compliments.

And, yes, I agree that activity points is not the point of all this . . . but it is a good motivational metric in some cases.

    Ratings and comments

Anyone can rate a site, but adding a comment as to why it was rated as such gives more clarity to other users.

It's not about gaining points or anything else, it's about rating openly and honestly with an open mind and giving the reasons.

Some of us will delve deeper and look for just one thing that is out of place and then search further to back up our findings :-)
