Does this website infringe upon people's rights to privacy, since it only provides an opt-out option, but does not ask you if you would like to opt-in to their "people finding" service. Please leave your comments and rate the site accordingly.

"We can help you if you need to get hold of someone on their mobile phone but don't have their number -The only directory with millions of mobile numbers - 118800".

My main worry is the fact that children could be tracked down using this service.

    Service suspended

Service suspended whilst we make improvements
The 118 800 service for mobile phone connections is currently unavailable - from this website and by phone - whilst we undertake major developments to our 'Beta Service' to improve the experience for our customers. We'll be back as soon as possible with the new improved service.

All ex-directory requests made by people in our directory to date are being processed. There will be no need to resend these requests. And we will take further ex-directory requests when the service resumes. We will not be taking ex-directory requests by phone or text whilst the service is not operational.

Please do not call us on 118 800 for anything other than landline directory enquiry requests as you will be charged for the call.

For other enquiries email us at contact@ 118800.co.uk or write to us at 118 800, PO Box 2747, Reading RG30 4ZQ

      Contact Details Missing

What a coincidence that this company has not provided full contact details - all it provides is an email address, a postcode and a PO Box - no telephone number. Which is strange, considering that this is a telecoms-based company.

    @ Catcha

Does this website infringe upon people's rights to privacy?

In a word YES as they are storing mobile phone numbers without the owners consent. With landlines users have the option not to be listed (ex-directory) but with this service it appears that users will have their cell phone numbers held for anyone who would care to look.

I was reading about this over the weekend, unfortunately the site had gone down due to the high demand of people wanting their numbers removed. I don't want my number on display for anyone and everyone and will be seeking its removal, but I shall also question why I wasn't asked to opt-in!

So BT have temporarily scrapped the use of PHORM, the government says that it will not be pursuing the Intercept Modernisation Program, but they failed to announce that they were hiring two firms to do it for them. Along with 118800, it is further erosion of what little privacy is left in the UK.

All they need now is someone to open your mail before the postie delivers it!

It's disgraceful and 118800 also puts many minors at high risk.

      A growing "Big Brother" society

I don't think anyone wants their mobile number listed in this way - I for one do not. What disgraces me the most is the threat to children, as many children as young as 7 have mobile phones these days, and their numbers are searchable by the general public (and yet sex offenders and violent offenders that are on parole do not have their addresses listed for "privacy" & "safety" reasons).

The UK Government really do seem to want to push this "Big Brother" society.

        Can only agree

Rights to any form of privacy have been eroded over the years and now it appears that the only ones entitles to any form of privacy are those in power, and as you say, sex offenders and violent offenders. It's a sad reflection on society that sites such as this are allowed to operate, disclosing information that the majority would not want publicised.

For minors, it will open the door to many weirdo's and paedophiles and this information should not be made public under any circumstances to safeguard children. It's bad enough trying to filter out the bad sites to protect them, but this takes it a step further and creates a whole new ball game which is absolutely disgraceful.

correct me if I'm wrong... please! :-)

I'll call it as you see it:
Phishing for mobile numbers, names and other PII for database inclusion for profit.

I rated RED and commented as such.

    Am I incorrect?

      You're right

They don't ask your permission to store your number, they simply buy it off of other companies. I'd say it's worse than phishing, because you don't even have the chance to make an informed decision (such as checking ratings). In the case of this site, if they want your number, they can have it. I think it's ridiculous. I don't mind so much having landlines listed, as they are easy to get, but mobiles are a step too far.

    @ g7w

They are not phishing as such as they already have the numbers, but without the users consent and users are not opting in to the service.

I am waiting for the site to come back online to see what other PII they hold, but this is a disgusting state of affairs and puts all cell phone users in the UK at risk, and specifically minors.

      that's worse then...

They are not phishing as such as they already have the numbers, but without the users consent and users are not opting in to the service.

That's worse then; I'd call that outright theft.
To obtain my cell/mobile number without my knowledge is theft.
Associating my name to my number and storing in a database for resale to other third-party vendors? Isn't there a law in the UK against this type of thing? Maybe something like Identity theft or something?

In any case... this site deserves more than just a "other" comment classification and "Fraud Scam Phishing" seemed appropriate to me I'll have to remember to change my comment from phishing to out right PII theft.

        It is worse...

It's a complete invasion of privacy and at present it is unknown just how much PII they have to go with the cell/mobile phone numbers, but they must have a certain amount to be able to match names to numbers and vice versa. The only way that they could get this sort of information is from the carriers so they are in the wrong to disclose information without the users consent too.

It seems that they have found loopholes to work around the Data Protection Act, and at present they are still undertaking some major developments

They will need more than God on their side when they come back online!

      sanctioned?

The service is sanctioned by the UK government and at the same time you are advised to unsubscribe?

Why allow a service to operate if you're being advised to remove yourself?

And the mobile receiver is required to pay for incoming calls?
      What a Rip-off!

      Companies House

Companies House is run by the UK government, so Big Brother must be rubbing his grubby, perverted little hands with joy!

They are opening a real can of worms and by following this route proves that the UK is NOT a democratic country and is run by dictators! But then, we also have an unelected leader....by any other name this would be called communism.

        Update!

It has just been announced on the 10 o'clock news that so many people have
tried to email 118 that the site crashed and the service has now been suspended!

            google

maybe they'll contract google.co.uk to host the service and the database; you must admit... Google can handle a good amount of bandwidth.
