WOT Surf Canyon search refinements group expanded

WOT search refinements

Last month we announced that a small group of users would pilot test a new search refinement feature powered by Surf Canyon. This feature has been a success, so we will gradually expand the group so eventually all WOT users will benefit from "WOT Safe Search" refinements when they do a Google search.

When you click on a refinement in Google search results, WOT earns a small amount of revenue. If you would rather not see the search refinement links, you can turn it off by clicking the [x] next to the refinements.

What is Surf Canyon?

SurfcanyonSurf Canyon is a search engine assistant that digs up the most relevant information from your search queries, sometimes from deep within the search results (when is the last time you visited page 83?) Once you install the add-on, the search engine results page becomes dynamic and personalized to you. For example, when you click a result, Surf Canyon re-ranks it based on your choices and buries what you don't need.

See our previous blog posting for more information.

    settings

The WOT Safe Search has the [X] which allows for it to be disabled.
There is nothing available in WOT->Settings to re-enable once it's "turned off"

Any and all partnered options, such as this, should have a "switch" in WOT User Settings; also the default option should be "off" with an announcement made via WOT's Rating popup with reference in the Wiki

So how does one turn it back "on?"

      Re: settings

the default option should be "off"

Sorry, most users never change their settings, so that's not a realistic option if we want someone to actually see the refinements.

So how does one turn it back "on?"

Set the option "weboftrust.scripts.disable_refinements" back to "false" in about:config.

    changed instructions?

was doing some technical work and kept seeing content to/from surfcanyon.com going through my browser.

after some digging, i realized that it was WOT.

so, i googled and found this post - then went to disable surfcanyon.

    but, when i got into about:config i don't see the weboftrust.scripts.disable_refinements setting.

    has it changed?

i have to say - as a network admin, this was a disappointing discovery. i also agree that the customer should make an explicit choice to enable a feature like this.

      Re: changed instructions?

No, it hasn't changed. You may need to create the setting value though. The easiest way to disable the feature is to click the "[ x ]" next to the search refinements.
