Not WOT related
Please don't take my tone as abrasive, but your question is more of a troubleshooting issue than a security issue, and as such is pretty much out of place here:
"The WOT discussion forum focuses on Internet security: anti-phishing work. anti-spam activities, protection from Internet fraud, and online safety. Make your voice heard!"Nevertheless, there are a lot of tech savvy users on here, and I suspect your question will either be answered here or via PM.
A good general troubleshooting site to answer your question would be the How-To Geek forum.

No, no, no, no . . .
First of all, it's not a formal "rule" (that I know of, anyway). Just sort of a guideline. That's what I was trying to convey, but obviously failed to do. Was also trying to help you find a place to get your question answered in case it wasn't answered here. That's why I gave you the link to HTG.
Second of all, there are no "apologies" necessary.
Thirdly, I'm at a loss trying to figure out why you think I was upset. Indeed I wasn't . . . which is why I tried to convey the message gently . . . "Please don't take my tone as abrasive". Probably should have used an emoticon.
As Blueberry Mountain said, it was only meant as a "hint" . . . and a gentle one at that. Evidently, I should have put "Please don't take my tone as abrasive" in bold. Sorry you took my tone as abrasive.
Do not want to discourage you from using the boards for security questions.
In any case, it looks as though you got your question answered here, so this episode seems to be over.
And, indeed, use the boards for your WOT questions.

How do I retrieve...?
The answer to your question depends on several factors including what OS you are using, and how you backed up your files. However, is there any reason why you can't just plug your USB drive into a USB port and directly access the files that you need?
BobJam is right to say that your query is not really a WOT related security issue but many WOT users, including me, are usually.quite happy to help with technical issues wherever we can.

input
No probs. I did make the assumption that your external drive is USB but the same applies for Firewire or e-SATA - just plug the drive into the appropriate port. You might want to clean up your system drive (sometimes referred to as the 'C drive' if you are using Windows) to make more free space available, which would help your external drive to run quicker.

always back up
In addition to backing up files onto an external drive, it is also worth burning backup files onto a DVD or CD-ROM so that there are always backup files in a Read Only format. For this I burn multi-session DVDs, which maximises disc usage and means that if all else fails there are backup files that can be retrieved onto any computer and because the backup files are in a Read Only format then those files cannot be tampered with. However, this does mean that quite a lot of backup discs can be accumulated and take up storage space but it is better to be safe than sorry.

external usb hardrive
I had to buy an external hard drive of 500 GB because I kept getting a warning my recovery space was nil. So I back up my computer each day.
My question is: How do I retrieve what I've backed up onto the external hard drive?
Thank you.
