    Website-Advisor Browser Add-ons

Hey, I understand WOT is a very useful tool, I was just wondering how unique the idea actually was. I know McAfee have a site advisor safety add-on when you purchase their (sub-standard) software, but what other competition is there that offers the same or a similar service to WOT?

    Thanks

    There are many...

Siteadvisor was first, afaik. But WOT is far better, imo.

Other advisors? Norton Safeweb, XPLs LinkScanner, but there are many more...

In any case, these advisors may have the same goal, but not the same methods...

First may not be the most popular

Take a look at most industries. The first mover isn't always the most successful.

Apple wasn't the first mp3 player manufacturer. However the iPod is certainly up there as the most successful. Same with their iPhone they weren't the first smart phone.

Likewise WOT may not be original. However, its form makes it very popular. which increases its reach and impact.

The most popular may not be the best

You're right. Some more examples comes to mind:

What happened to Altavista, after Google appeared?
However, I doubt that Bing will replace Google in any foreseeable future... ;-)

And how about MySpace and Facebook?

Actually this is a bit weird, as MySpace was intended for everyone, but now is mostly for musicians. Facebook was originally for students only, but later targeted anyone over the age of 13. They seem to have replaced each other positions...

In any case, I'd like to add that the most popular may not be the best.
(I guess that Microsoft could be an excellent example of mediocracy.)
