I am basing this on my experience with Spam. Most of the spam I
receive is for xxx sites and sex enhancement products. I might be
drawing a wrong conclusion from this, but just feel that any site
that makes money from offering raising hopes (which I believe porn
does by definition) can't be considered trustworthy. Those sites
have a right to exist according to the First Amendment and WOT
members have the right according to the First Amendment to rate
them we see fit.
The assumption that all adult content abuses women is just
wrong. Some does, but it's a very very wide subject area
"adult".
If what they mean is pornography then "adult content" shouldn't be
used to try to niceify the subject and make it
more acceptible.
I'm pretty certain that sites selling vibrators are counted as
adult content, and I expect sites selling violent films are
adult,
and in the most general term ordering alcohol online is adult
too.
But still, even within the accepted area of sexually oriented
adult content even then not everything is about demeaning and
abusing and taking advantage of women or of men even. Some of it is
utterly consensual and positive. Admittedly there's likely a lot of
junk out there, in the same way there's a lot of junk in the world
of dieting or weight gain, but it doesn't mean there's something
wrong with some of the more genuine sites.
Also beyond that i absolutely have to rate it that some are
trustworthy from personal experience.
I'm a fairly normal person, or is that abnormal, in that i have no
interest in porn, really, none.
i do however have photographer friend who creates erotic artwork
with models who often volunteer to work for him because his art is
award winning and the results are beautiful and the process and the
results are in no way demeaning or taking advantage of the person,
it is beautiful and a skilled creative process and result. He also
works in private sessions
for couples who want their own interesting self portraits for
themselves to decorate their private areas of their home in an
intensely personal way.
He and his site are really, not harming anyone, enhancing peoples
lives and relationships and is totally trustworthy, he has to be or
he wouldn't be in business. Lovely chap.
His work, being as it can involve fetishistic images or some
nudity sometimes does however count as adult.
So please don't make assumptions about all adult material being
dirty and demeaning. Some is beautiful and probably less dirty and
more honest than perfectly acceptible areas like the hollywood film
industry.

Not all adult content is pornography. I also consider sites
selling guns, violent games, 18+ movies, and so on to be adult
content. In fact, anything that I do not consider suitable for
children would fall into the category of Adult Content.
I believe that most adult sites are NOT trustworthy because the
owners often use them to solicit computer users to them. Than,
their computers get infected with viruses and spyware.
The blog post referencing this poll is about the adult
entertainment industry / pornography / aka: "red light
district."
Many pornographic sites lure users (of age and consent) into
offering their email address for spamming purposes.
Others, less legitimate, offer Trojans in the form of flash or
other "codec required to view" download.
Then there's the "tube movie" sites that are heavily advertised
and I've noticed they are now advertising for Cialis / Viagra aka:
ED Pills and other fake online pharmacy links from know Phishers /
credit card scams.
There's the "Celeb's sites (celebrities) or individual "model
sites" that are compromised infecting unprotected visitors with
drive-by malware installations.
The only ones who would say that pornographic sites are "safer"
than non-pornographic are simply advocating and promoting the adult
entertainment business; after all it's a billion dollar
industry.
There are very few "reputable, legitimate" pornography sites out
there...
I remember about a year ago (or longer) that an adult site admin
requested a review for their website, though I can't remember the
domain name. They had some opposing viewpoints in the discussion
(naturally) but I think the site was rated as reputable with strong
child safety ratings.

When I rate a site that contains "Adult Content", I am saying
that the site contains either explicit images or inappropriate
languages. And the majority of the sites that uses inappropriate
languages are relatively safe, so you can say that such sites are
pretty much trustworthy. On the other hand, sites that contains
explicit images should be rated unsatisfactory in the
trustworthiness column unless the site in concern is extremely
popular with users.

Wjilst I agree with much of what you say, I think that it is
going too far to suggest that because a site is "extremely
popular with users" then it follows that the site is
trustworthy.
There are an awful lot of gullible, ignorant, unwitting,
careless and/or too trusting people using the Internet, and it is
quite probable that some unsavoury sites will become popular from
time to time. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that the popular
site is trustworthy. For instance, a popular site could be hacked
(not the site owner's fault) and so becomes untrustworthy. The site
could even develop its own unsavoury practices - cf. Google, some
years ago, having to change copyright policies after their terms
and conditions were found to be trying to take ownership of
(steal?) copyright material.
I totally agree with you that there are way too much WOT users
who are too trusting, but according to my experience, one popular
adult site, manroulette.com, once got hacked and had unknowingly
infected their users with a drive-by trojan. But because of its
immense popularity, the malware problem was rapidly corrected, and
therefore I don't think we should rate a particular site down just
because it got hacked. Google did remove the new copyright policy,
didn't it?

I find WOT's definitions of "trustworthy" and "adult content"
and "child safety' to be unclear and confusing to the average
member (like me). I'm thinking y'all WOT developers should break
the primary ratings system into more specific categories, and do
away with comment categories. Keep letting members make comments
which don't affect overall ratings though. Just saying, instead of
4 categories, break them down to more specific ones.
eg;
virus
phishing
adware
spyware
unethical conduct
nudity or sexually graphic material
adult language
browser exploit... etc etc ...
Yeesh I get it now.. so many possibilities... lol
But personally I'm willing to take the extra time to click in an
effort to isolate what I believe to be the specific risk(s). Just
don't forget to provide an "undetermined" or "undecided" option for
each category.
Edit: I now see my earlier choice to use slash marks was equally

According to Avast pages with the word "London" are infected
with malware 99 times more often than sites with the word sex.
I am not sure how representative this is. A fellow slashdotter
scanned a list of big current smut sites and hit the word sex only
on 12% of the sites. Also, sex is probably a word that is hit on
TONS of regular pages. Still, its an interesting number.
The old joke of the internet fitting on a CD when you leave out
the porn has its merits...
To make a test, I fired up a VMware and used the FF tool linky
on a couple of 100 links on some porn list site. I choose one from
page 2 on google to maybe hit a less trustworthy. What I got was
"clean". No malware (at least none that my antivirus software can
detect)
So, I think they are clean in that regard. [I got about a
million cookies and crap, but nothing dangerous]
According to the next study the amount of sexually related spam
had decreased wildly in 2005 from 23% to about 6%. I guess the
wikipedia numbers reflect the current numbers. Didn't bother to
check further. http://www.ftc.gov/reports/canspam05/051220canspam...
So it seems, porn sites are not big (direct) spammers after
all.
Credit card safety:
Clicked through a couple of sites and it seems that a lot handle it
using services like paypal. Looks safe to me. I would never give my
credit card number to an unknown company. But I guess a lot of
people are not that cautious. So, I guess that should be a rating
criteria.
Privacy:
No idea. I did not bother to create a fake email address and
register it on some pages to find out what I get. Please note: I
wouldn't consider mails from the original site spam. Just from
other, unrelated sites. Would be interesting to find out. Gut
feeling: I would never give them any personal data. On an
intellectual level, I am not sure thats justified by the data I

general porn industry information. No details here, its time for

Based on all that my answer is: "The majority of adult sites are
trustworthy, legitimate businesses". If you find studies and
information that says otherwise, I would be interested in updating
my opinion.
Imho concerning "adult content" WOT is merely an instrument of
censorship and not "security". Drive-by malware downloads can
happen just about anywhere:
Most xxx sites contain viruses, malware, and other worms that no
one would want deliberately on their computer (though entering
these sites are deliberate enough and just asking for it).
I avoid these sites overall, and always mark them down. I don't
approve of their content whatsoever. Exploitation to-the-max. These
sites always receive an "Adult Content" comment from me.
"Ask not what God can do for you, but what you can do for God."
Sure adult content may be used for pleasure purposes. But like
all companies you can't trust them. And the adult biz is the most
demeaning type of industry out there. Religions don't like it.
Parents don't like it (around their kids). Former porn stars don't
like it (disease or prostitute in spare time). Anyway it's just
dirty overall. Adult industry is the worst type of business because
it contains the most illegal activity even more than financial
scams. So if a website had adult content I might take a couple of
sneak peeks ( when im bored alone ) but that doesn't mean I trust
it!
“The only true wisdom is knowing that you know nothing.” - Socrates
I know this is an old poll, but I just happened across an
article that I think really sums this subject up;
hxxp://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/12/03/browser_history_sniffing/
Browser history sniffing among other things. I'm not saying that
every adult content site out there is a scam, on the contrary,
plenty are fine, but if you are going to go to one of these sites,
use caution. It is just like real life actual "adult" activity, it
must be done safely.
That said, social engineering, I mean networking, sites are far
less trustworthy. In comparison, pornography sites are like a skip
in the park compared to the damage caused by these supposedly
"safe" "services".
In regards to simply failing these sites based on their content,
I think it would only be fair to fail them for child safety until
actually performing a proper "audit" if you will of their services.
If they aren't ripping people off (one user above said many use
Paypal if you wish to purchase their wares) and they aren't
spreading malware, then it is only fair to mark them appropriately,
as good businesses in an ugly industry that yes, is full of
exploited people.
Unfortunately, the world is FULL of idiots, it isn't our job to
judge, just to guide people towards the good vendors or away from
the really bad sites that are using this exploitation to commit
further exploitations. As much as some may think, it is still not
justice if some person who enjoys whatever legal adult content,
pornography or otherwise, is exploited because we do not agree with
what they are viewing.
My experience of life and the internet is that the
trustworthiness of websites is correlated with the trustworthiness
of its users within the context of the site.
So an online encyclopedia like Wikipedia will be more trustworthy
simply because of the context. This applies even though there are
some of its users that are inserting fictions into its
records.
In comparison, most porn sites encourage and highlight sexual
affairs, misogyny and mistreatment of (primarily) women, etc and
naturally their users are not trustworthy either. Some say that
porn sights are just businesses but what you promote tends to
become what you think.
Very few adult sites (relating to pornographic distribution and
viewing) are actually "Trustworthy." Most are scams to screw with
the desperate person's computer. The only ones that should be
trusted are the following:
Now, with ALL porn sites, there WILL be scams (e.g.
advertisements, LiveJasmin pop-ups, etc.). Although I don't
personally use adult sites, I know enough about them from various
sources - reviews, recommendations, ratings, reports, personal
experiences, popularity, etc. - to have a good idea about which are
"good" and not. Many will link to not-so-safe sites, and many may
have trackers/bugs/spyware/malware. Then again, remember that it's
porn.
Hope this helps.

Now, with ALL porn sites, there WILL be scams (e.g. advertisements, LiveJasmin pop-ups, etc.). Although I don't personally use adult sites, I know enough about them from various sources - reviews, recommendations, ratings, reports, personal experiences, popularity, etc. - to have a good idea about which are "good" and not. Many will link to not-so-safe sites, and many may have trackers/bugs/spyware/malware. Then again, remember that it's porn.
Hope this helps.
