Now this is a good poll

Now this is a good poll :D

Considering I don't have any credit cards to use online (hate them) I do take every precaution to pretect my partner from being phished with hers.

As good as the advice is here, people have to stop disregarding it because they rely too much on credit card protection to bail them out of the preverbial poo.

Using an obese PC. I offer it a bit and it takes a megabyte.

    Gishit and check the URL

I always check the URL in an email to make sure that the company is sending me to a main part of the site. Chances are that if there are numbers and or letters at the end of the URL, it may be an attempt to validate your email address as being active--for spamming. I also use a service called Gish Puppy. They allow you to use custom email addresses use in online forms. The custom email address forwards email from the site in question to your real email account. If the website you subscribed to is a spammer, you can choose to stop email from being forwarded to your account via Gish Puppy without contacting the sammer.

    I'm...

Always check the URL of links received in email before clicking
...and some more...for example: only trusted websides!

I always check the URL and if it's in the Junk mail box of my e-mail provider (Hotmail), then I don't even bother and just delete it completely. BMO's real website lands in my inbox, and they don't contact me often anyway - especially not to sign in for a Mastercard that I don't even own! :P

    Check the link and clarify

Check the link and clarify it's legit. Even then I use things like this to make sure there is no risk from possible keyloggers and such just in case.

I also make sure that I'm 100% sure where the money is going to and clarify all the little details.

All or some of the above

I check if communications are crypted (over SSL), I regulary change my passwords, and like Saad92 I use firefox extensions (block possibly malicious javascript, anti-keyloggers, ...).

But we must remember that online transactions can't be 100% safe, so before to buy something on Internet, check WOT map ;)

    Quite a few checks

I personally only use a couple of online shops which I have used for years without a hitch, but occasionally I do use an unkown store, so before buying from them I have a list I check:

1 - Check the site rating on WOT and any comments left
2 - Check domain on URLVoid
3 - Check the site on a Search engine usually something like "CompanyName, Scam" etc.
4 - Check terms & conditions and Privacy policy
5 - Check for valid SSL
6 - Use Google Streetview to try and locate and view their listed address
7 - Then go with my gut feeling. If there is any slight thing that doesn't sit right with me, I will avoid completely.

    Multiple checks but still...

Sometimes even all the safety features in the world cannot save you completely from a unwanted scam.

    They can come from everywhere.

Never check nor click on a URL in an email

Go directly to the site that interests you and never click on a link in an email. Too bad that was not one of the choices in the poll.

Multiple measures should be taken every time

    1) Always check the URL of the links received in your email with McAfee SiteAdvisor and WOT to see if the website is involved in any spam or scam before clicking.

    2) Regularly change your passwords every 6 months is also a good practice to prevent the misuse of your credit cards.

    3) Always read through the privacy policy carefully. Use EULAlyzer if necessary.

4)And finally, check for SSL or HTTPS connection whenever you are making any payment.

      2) Regularly change your passwords every 6 months
So the criminals wait for six month unless they rob you? Changing the passwords is good, but you should do it much more often.

    Keepin it clean

I always change passwords often. I check every link that comes into my inbox.
Also, I don't use a credit card unless it is necessary, which isn't often.

I fall back on knowing who I'm connecting to and always ensuring I call before ordering online to make sure everything seems legit.

RE: What actions do you take to reduce the chances of your perso

I use Firefox, OpenDNS, WOT and No Script on my PC. I use a VM of Ubuntu if I really want to check out something that I am pretty sure is going to be bad. In addition I have a competent hardware firewall protecting the edge. It is sad that I have to do all this just to keep a handful of evil people from doing evil things.
