- Scareware is rising at an "unprecedented rate." In its report on the first half of 2009, The Anti-Phishing Working Group says that more than 485,000 strains of scareware were found. Approximately 22,000 a month were reported in January, rising to over 152,000 in June – indicating a very strong upward trend.
- Websense Security Labs predicts that we will see more than 80 percent of all malicious content hosted on sites with “good” reputations in 2009.
- Panda Security reports that about 90 percent of all corporate email is spam, with an additional 1.11 percent containing actual malware.
- ScamBusters reports that $100 to $200 million are lost to spammers every year.
- The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) reported the number of crimeware-spreading URLs exploded to a record high of 9529 at quarter two's end (2008), 258 percent higher than at the end of Q2 2007.
- Panda Security reports revealed that Trojans comprised over 63 percent of all new malicious codes. Adware followed closely behind, comprising 22.40 percent of all infections in Q2 2008.
- The countries hosting the most phishing sites in 2008 were the USA (37.25%), Russia Federation (11.66%) and China (10.3%) according to the APWG.
- Financial services continued to be the most targeted industry sector at 92.4 percent of all attacks in the month of January 2008, according to the APWG.
- The National Fraud Information Center reports that the top three Internet fraud complaints were related to online shopping and auctions (63%) and 11 percent of the complaints were about the Nigerian email scam.
