There's a new WinPatrol version if you're interested: http://www.winpatrol.com/ or http://www.filehippo.com/download_winpatrol/
:)
I'd also like to use this new forum topic to ask a question? Is WinPatrol of major usefulness (In terms of security)? I myself have never used it nor even tried it but I've heard great things about it. I'll probably try it sandboxed now but...:)
Any comments on it? How it saved you from a piece of malware etc? ;) Is it a recommended addition to a multi-layered defense? Are they any known compatibility problems? Does it affect system performance?
I know it's a lot of questions but any answers would be much appreciated.
:D
Yes
ti 17. maaliskuuta 2009 04:53:23 — BobJamIt can be used as both a diagnostics program AND a security aid.
For example, it will alert you if your hosts file is changed, and it will also alert on new programs installed, much like a HIPS (though it's not one).
I use it primarily as a substitute for MSConfig to disable start up nonsense. It's capabilities there are much more sophisticated than MSConfig.
In any case, I highly recommend it. (And it hasn't made any excessive demands on my resources).

AnVir Task Manager
ke 28. lokakuuta 2009 16:19:23 — alien09I use AnVir Task Manager, it’s the best solution for your PC or laptop. It manages startup programs and active processes, removes spyware. It shows full information about each process including command line, DLLs that the program uses, inbound and outbound traffic, disk load, tray icon, performance graph, internet connections. AnVir Task Manager makes XP or Vista much handier and allows you to speed up your PC or Windows boot time.
Anvir Task Manager is the best windows task manager

Hey shazza !
to 29. lokakuuta 2009 14:19:05 — AthloniteSteven and I had that discussion before. He said that he would look into this matter. I believe he was talking about the full suite with antivirus and not the Task Manager on it's own. Either he forgot about it or didn't look into it yet. In any case, it is a very useful program and isn't a rogue software. If you would like to test drive one, a free version can be had here : http://dottech.org/freebies/dottech-exclusives/729... . Please read through thoroughly. This is a Free , Paid For program that Ashraf has been given by AnVir. Not a Pirated Copy.
Found the thread that we discussed AnVir Task Manager :

I too use AnVir (the one from Ashraf's site) and it does have a bevy of info., maybe too much info. for the Average user who wouldn't know what to do with all of it. In any case , you can still get that free Valid license from Ashraf's site : http://dottech.org/freebies/dottech-exclusives/729... . Just make sure to read through the instructions and the Updates.

Very Useful !
ti 17. maaliskuuta 2009 09:38:57 — AthloniteHet Tonor !!
I have it installed (the paid version) on all of our PCs and notebooks. It doesn't take any resources to run and is a wonderful addition to any configuration. Will not conflict with any security program. Right now , on my Vista notebook, it uses 2641KB
of ram (Memory) . For what it does and prevents, this is a very comfortable level of ram use.
My youngest Daughter was complainig about the security on her XP notebook the other day (she's always complaining about it. think there's too much) but, while on MSN with her friend yesterday , she said that she experienced a weird message.
So, she shut down the connection and called her friend about it. Well, it just so happened that her friend had been infected with a mail bot and was awaiting the arrival of a tech to clean out the infection. My daughter then came to me and said that , the Little Dog came up , Barked and stopped the bot from infecting her notebook. NOW, she understands WHY I have installed those security programs.
I'm pretty sure she won't complain about those programs anymore.
All of this to say that , YES , this is a good and Very Useful addition to your layered configuration.

WinPatrol PLUS is licensed software
ti 17. maaliskuuta 2009 13:01:21 — YoKennyWinPatrol is licensed software and should not be installed on systems that do not have a license!
I have sent an email to Bill P. asking him if passing the PLUS license around is legal and if not I will point him here.
Plus License
ti 17. maaliskuuta 2009 14:25:31 — cotojoI had a comment from a website offering free licenses for PCTools Spyware Doctor...needless to say I forwarded the details to PCTools.

Interesting that you

The fact is that the web site says " NO Additional Licenses required
You become the PLUS member, not your computer. You're welcome and encouraged to install WinPatrol and activate PLUS on any machine you or your immediate family use."

Layered Defense
ti 17. maaliskuuta 2009 14:23:48 — cotojoWinPatrol is a superb little program and also has a portable version which is great for troubleshooting other PC's.
The installed version sits quietly in the system tray and will alert users to changes being made to their systems. The interface is easy to navigate and reveals a wealth of information. In the Startup Programs there is a little checkbox, which when ticked will show 'secret startup locations'
I see this as an essential added layer to anyones defense and will not conflict with any other programs, very low resources so you really don't know it is there.

WinPatrol rebuffs the toolbar miscreants
ke 3. kesäkuuta 2009 06:41:45 — Steven AveryHi Folks,
Tonor :
"The CEO of WinPatrol is one of the few people who refused to add the Ask toolbar into his product. "
And lived to tell about it !
Actually there are many software products that have nothing to do with "Ask and the Toolbar Miscreants" when approached. BillP went one step further and helped inform his readership about how this toolbar plague "works" on the vendor side. The inducement to sell out your user base for lucre.
Triple kudos to BillP -- integrity first.
Shalom,
Steven Avery
