Figures published by Symantec suggest 93% of the people scammed downloaded the rogue programs by choice after being tricked into believing it was legitimate.
Scareware in the news again. The fight against things like scareware will always continue, so long as there are people without good protection software willing to click that big flashing Download & Install Today! button...
And it won't get better.

Friends of mine have been astonished to see the quantity of rogue sites in search results (and sponsored links) after installing WOT. And they're grateful.

43 million
pe 23. lokakuuta 2009 07:59:02 — g7wUp to 43 million people could have given their bank details to cyber criminals after being duped by fake anti-virus software online, a web security firm has found.
IMO that number a bit exaggerated
Figures published by Symantec suggest 93% of the people scammed downloaded the rogue programs by choice after being tricked into believing it was legitimate.
Is that 93% of Norton AV users?
Or are they suggesting that Symantec is tracking every DL by every person online...
Also there is a difference between a download and a download and an install.
How many users who downloaded actually installed, where's that statistic at?
I download many of these, sometimes install for testing, many times reupload to VirusTotal (or similar).
250 rogue programs downloaded 43 million times in a 1 year period, assuming Symantec has the ability to track every download on the Net (including what I may have to offer on my homepage) which I highly doubt, is not the same as the headline suggests that 43 million people could have given their bank details to cyber criminals. It's "news" like this that is just as bad as Scareware, shall we label it as "ScareNews" or "RogueNews" or maybe simply "NewsWare" ?? ;-)

WOT Should be the Leader
pe 23. lokakuuta 2009 15:23:05 — HiqutipieWe have all seen these popups & fake advertisements promoting devious software...They always say test your PC for Free & the test always show all these problems that you all of the sudden have out of the blue but you can only fix these problems with their software...
They don't effect the power users because we know better but the majority of users don't know any better and fall prey to such therefore it is incumbent upon WOT and the rest of us to police such as WOT attempts to do...
Symantec says they have a list which I have not seen & Wikipedia has a partial list but why has not a full list of these Fake Software been posted for all & Why has not WOT taken the lead on this topic...Obviously they should know about it but why have they not broadcasted a Warning & List of such...
Lists
pe 23. lokakuuta 2009 21:57:23 — BobJamIf you search on "rogue" or "rouge" right here in this forum, you will see a LOT of threads here about these things . . . lists, etc.
BTW, WOT itself (the company) DOES NOT do any listing of sites . . . it's the individual members that do the rating and listing, and the listings are here on this forum . . . that search will show you. So, your exhortation to "take the lead" (not sure what you mean by that anyway) should be directed to WOT users, and NOT WOT itself (the company).
As far as this "lead" goes (whatever that means), I think the WOT users have been pretty active in identifying these things.
Also, take a look at techjaws.com. It's a blog where the owner, Frank (and he posts here too) highlites a lot of these rogues.
If you want lists (other than on this forum), take a look at hpHosts and malwaredomains.com and Dancho Danchev's blog.
And by "full list", do you mean absolutely EVERY rogue there is on the Internet? If you are a "power user", you should know what that means. So, tell me, how would one post this "full" list?
AH! BUT !!
pe 23. lokakuuta 2009 22:23:14 — AthloniteDon't forget "cotojo", Colin : http://freepcsecurity.co.uk./ , has a new list of Rogues and bad sites (infected or otherwise) every few days or so. Lately , it's been everyday.
I think we (the members of WOT) do a good job of advertising our position on this type of software. Some of us are also part of other security forums and from what I have seen, they all have a badge in their sigs. or advise on the use of this program.
It would be impossible to List All of the Rogues out there as they are multiplying by the second. Some are revamped oldies with the same or reconfigured malware inside those old Rogues. While the new ones carry a bevy of new infections that are very hard to cure.
My advice to whomever wants to List all of the rogues would be to List all of the available sites that actually have those lists. This could be another forum topic to be added to the ones we already have. More specific than just General or Technical in it's context.
What do you think Sami ??

pe 23. lokakuuta 2009 23:04:13 — HiqutipieI know how to find rogues but I am not looking for individuals but like Symantec said they had a list of 250 of the main rogues or most downloaded...It should be posted & kept updated by all security networks including WOT...
Very similar to Athlonite's link...
