Windows 7
ven 23 oct 2009 04:29:24 UTC — Xp54321Today was the official release day of Windows 7. This has coincided with the release of new computer models from many different manufacturers all trying to cash in on the hype.
I know many WOT members did pre-order Windows 7 quite a while back.
If anyone here has upgraded yet (I just did), what's your opinion of Windows 7 thus far?
My own upgrade went just fine (It took around two hours) and I'm now cruising along.

ven 23 oct 2009 05:17:01 UTC — jpvipOn October 12, and it is very nice right now. I got the full version of Ultimate, and installed it, and it works well. I think there are some very neat features, and the games look good. Windows Media Center did not change too much, but no big deal. Everything still looks good. Most programs work, that also worked in Vista.

I just got my copy of 7 Home Premium and am in the process of preparing the notebook for a "In place" upgrade. I want to see if there are any quirks that come out by doing it this way.
I have read that there might be a few difficulties with the In Place upgrade so, I'm printing the solutions to problems already known. This way , I get to fix any (or most) problems that comes along. You don't want to be connected while upgrading.

In-Place Upgrade
dim 25 oct 2009 02:22:01 UTC — Xp54321I did an in-place upgrade and encountered no major problems. I did stay offline for the upgrade and connected only after it was complete.
I should note I used a download upgrade rather than a a physical disc.

It uses less ram, boots faster, and the GUI is more responsive when there are many graphics intensive apps running. The new taskbar takes a bit of getting use to but it definitely improves the ease of task switching when there are many windows open. I've tried the Mac OSX dock and I feel that the Win7 Taskbar is definitely more intuitive and faster to use. Installation is also quite quick (I did a clean install). It took less than 20 minutes for me.
A few minor concerns:
[1] I wish the power manager in the tray icons would show more than 2 settings at a time. It showed 3 in Vista, not sure why it is only 2 now.
[2] I wish the Win7 install process would boot me into a Standard User account instead of an Admin account by default. I believe I had to create a Standard User account myself. Can anyone verify this?
[3] I wish Microsoft could include Microsoft Security Essentials with Win 7 by default. Damn those Europeans and their money grabbing EU council. Monopoly my ASS! MSE is an ESSENTIAL install. It is install and forget! It doesn't pesker you and there is essentially zero performance drop! It is the best antimalware app out there for the typical Windows user. As with all anti-Malware software that have real-time scanners, you shouldn't have two real-time engines running at the same time or the locks they place on system files and resources can degrade performance because one will expect something to be free while the other is actually using it.
On my computer, I have both Microsoft Security Essentials and AVG Free Anti-Virus installed. I simply installed MSE and left it with all it's default settings, because they are the settings I would actually choose. With AVG, I installed that and just disabled it's real-time anti-virus scanner while leaving it's real-time LinkChecker on since MSE doesn't have a link checker. I've noticed no conflicts with this setup. If you do happen to have both the AVG anti-virus real-time scanner running at the same time as the MSE one, then you will notice a performance lag. So just disable the AVG anti-virus real-time scanner and you will be fine.
With this setup using FireFox, I have both WOT and the AVG LinkChecker scanning every link I click or URL I enter. If I do happen to download something malicious, then I have the MSE real-time scanner checking things. I have both MSE and AVG scheduled to do a virus scan once a week.
It is still anti-malware...

There are several reasons for this, which I don't want to enter, because they will be argued against by Microsoft supporters (I want to let you know my OS but don't want this thread to turn into Microsoft vs. X). I feel sorry for XP users who can't upgrade directly to Windows 7. I'm currently running an RC of Ubuntu Karmic, and the final version will be released on Thursday.

only way to stop it some times then may be repair or go to new 5 time so far and my kid's don't like say it slow 2000 MB Ram 2.400 CPU ,And Price in NZ $500 buy new PC for $700 think windows 8 will be better?

There's an issue in Windows 7 (32-bit only) that prevents Windows 7 from starting after the computer has been forced shut down. If you power off your PC without proper shut down then you won't be able to start your PC again.

I have had two power failures before (failed sleep mode), and my computer was fine to start. The problem is, is video cards. When a video card does not function properly, and you are to have an instant power down or surge, it can corrupt the cards. If you are able to start up the computer, you will find that hibernate or sleep mode no longer function.
Windows 8 is a long story, and the details are too vague to even talk about it.

not work for me it kill's XP and not fix windows 7 so go to new, as for got to sleep not like, Power saver, Balanced, all so not like, keep on High Performance so far so good,
hibernate or sleep mode was not good in XP work only 9 out of 10 times

I personally didn't find any speed improvements between a clean Vista and 7, but maybe it's because of my hardware.
I have better luck with gaming, especially not many problems with resolution, quality, performance drops, etc. like when I had Vista.
I don't have much to say about other stuff like compatibility, didn't encounter one, just third party software incompatibilities with another third party software.
It was fresh, but it doesn't feel the same as XP in a way, more onto the Vista side with small interface changes.
