Mass rating tool for WOT power users
Wed 10 Sep 2008 12:41:52 PM UTC — Deborah S.WOT is fortunate to have experienced volunteer reviewers working together with us to make the Internet safer for everyone. These dedicated people use their time and lots of effort to submit site ratings, many for untrustworthy sites that could cause harm and annoyance to computer users.
In order to aid these volunteers, we have added a new mass rating tool especially designed for multiple submissions with matching ratings and comments. The tool, called "Mass rating" is located in Gold and Platinum level user's Profile pages.
Thanks to Lordpake for the original suggestion of a mass submission tool! We look forward to receiving your feedback.

This is a great idea. I will check this out in about a week by which time my account should be gold.
Thanks!
That's a great time-saver!

^^ Yes!
My poor wrist can finally have a break. The basic GUI itself was a bit heavy to manually enter all the data and select proper ratings with mouse.

Great...
Great idea to have more possibilities, depending on level.
After all there are at least 3 kinds of us:
Newbies, that just bought their first pc
More or less expperienced users.
Experts in this or that field.
Most times one solution does not fit all equally well;
so offering differentiated methods would be optimal.. :)
I'm sorry if it is staring
I'm sorry if it is staring right at me in the face, but could anyone tell me where in the profile page it appears please?
Re: I'm sorry if it is staring
There's a separate tab for it on the Profile page. If you don't see it on yours yet, give it an hour or two.
Still no luck :(.

Re: Still no luck
I hear you might have to start a new session for the tab to appear. Try removing cookies for mywot.com and restarting your browser. If that still didn't work, let us know.
Thanks, it's all fixed now

How far away is gold?
Deborah: "The tool, called "Mass rating" is located
in Gold and Platinum level user's Profile pages..."
Since I'm not gold yet, I'll have to wait, but how long?
I couldn't recall where the list was located,
and in the end I had to google WOT.
Here's the list (to save you some time):
Platinum - 10,000 points
Gold - 6000 points
Silver - 3000 points
Bronze - 1500 points
Blue - beginner
PS: WOT has 13 members gold or above,
based upon "Most active users",
so far (15 Sept) at least...
Re: How far away is gold?
That's right, there are currently 13 gold or platinum level users. It's not easy to reach that level, because of the logarithmic scale.
On the other hand, there's a fairly long tail of less active users. The last time I checked, the combined activity score for the entire community was somewhere around 30 million.
The long tail, ghosts and limits...
Yes, I could imagine a tail. I think I read about it somewhere last year, but forgot about it until reminded. Thanks for the link....
Actually there's also a third category, beyond hyperactive and less active users. In lack of a better word I'll call them 'ghosts'; users that signed up once, and then forgot all about it, no activity at all. Last month I was checking a small sample of users of Siteadvisor (looking for bogus), and I was amazed at the amount of ghost-profiles. Then again, it's an uncertain category; I recall that I was quite inactive the first half year myself, then I returned, and started rating for real. And still am, here and there. But, I too started as a 'ghost'...
But back to the original point: 13 users qualifying for the new mass-rating tool is not much. Perhaps this limit shouldn't be tied directly to levels? How many more users could be allowed, if the limit was 5000 instead of 6000..?

And how many of these users would actually know how to use this, instead of abusing it? When I approached WOT with this idea, I was IMHO already having an established 'reputation' for using ratings with proper comments (ie. why I indeed rated).
Personally I would hate to see an unproven user to have access to this feature.
Just my 0.02€ (and hope I don't sound a bit elitistic here :P )

Re: Limits
I think we'll see how the mass rating tool works for the more experienced users first, before considering lowering the activity score limit, but it's possible.
Mass Rating Tool
I am glad the mass rating tool is only accessible to very few users. My first concern upon reading it was how easy it would be to abuse this tool and skew the ratings. I still have this concern and will withhold judgment regarding this feature. It seems like the possibility for someone to aggressively rate sites just to become a user who can use the mass rating tool and then misuse it - either to spread their own malware or to skew site ratings based on personal views - is high. I hope I am wrong as this would make mywot a harmful tool.
Mass Rating Tool
I agree with Scott and Rob. This tool could be used in the wrong way. We here at Spacequad AntiSpam Services only started using this service recently and have found it to be a great way to help others that have the plugin installed in their browsers. When we report, most of them come with comments and we supply most of them with a link back to our proof that we have. As of this posting, we have not really encountered any misrepresented ratings or comments. So having the Mass Rating Tool eligibility requirements set high, will give the noobies a chance to gain experience first before submitting a bunch of sites all at once. What I think should be incorporated into the tool when the user first reaches that level, is a probationary period. This way their ratings can be checked by other professionals that have reached the Platinum level.
mass rating tool
as someone fairly new to what.i think only the most experienced should have access to a mass rating tool.i would not want to make a mistake and give a bad site a massive good rating nor would i want to give a good site a massive bad rating.i usualy rate new sites good if there is not a lot of cookies on the floor to pick up.if i dont detect any spyware or if the content lives up to its heading.i try to be fair and not judgemental on my own belief system.i.e.biased for my own reasons.also if someone fairly new could mass rate sites a bad site could get its team to join and jump up its ratings.so leave mas voting to them who are very experienced.
I like to consider myself as
I like to consider myself as a vigilante against this kind of behaviour. If I see people manipulating comments, I generally look through their comments and see if any of their ratings need "countering"
Well i guess im not going to
Well i guess im not going to be moving up any time soon.
How to get the tool and how to move us with experience?
A more standard drive tool is greatly needed, just how do we get to use it and own do we earn our way up the totem pole.

Nice idea for you great guys.
Mass Rate Tool
Just curious...why is the limit only 100? What if the user have a lot?
Example the person has 100k of domains...
I'm sure it would seriously take a long time to finish.

Yeah... the limit should be increased, even if only for Plat's and not Gold's.
just curious
how exactly does the mass rating tool work?
i know i'm a long way off, but i'm wondering what it looks like, how it works (faster, less clicking?)
thanks.

Mass rating
Mass rating looks and works like ordinary rating, with two exceptions:
1) You can input any number of sites to be rated, but the system processes 100 each time you click. (1000 sites = 10 clicks)
2) Ordinary rating allows rating only, without comments.
Mass rating insists that you also comment...
Actually there's a third aspect to consider: be sure what you do when you do it. Correcting a single mistake takes only a moment. But correcting 1000 mistakes is a different matter...
Rating a site without actually checking it out seems dangerous
Here's my 2 cents on this:
I totally disagree with this mass rating tool idea. The whole idea of rating a site should be that someone actually determines that a site is trustworthy or not. Mass rating makes that sites get a bad rating, just because it's on someones 'hit list'. If that's a false positive (site isn't REALLY bad) then the bad rating is amplified by multiple users mass rating a site as bad without even confirming it! Hurting someone('s sites) reputation without even checking it out is not cool.
MyWOT isn't getting better through this... it makes me trust it less.
Just as rating any site, the
Just as rating any site, the rater has to be responsible when rating. But mass rating is a great idea. I often get the same spam from the same spammers and mass rating can be an advantage. I had no idea it existed and actually was asking for such a feature.
Just today I got spam on one email account from:
http://bscff.onlinestoremopg-11.com
http://bkayl.onlinestoremopg-12.com
http://wpswj.onlinestoremopg-13.com
http://smztn.onlinestoremopg-18.com
Same spam, same spammers, and unfortunately I had to rate each site individually.

And I am deprived the right to a mass rating, i don't care
