Bing: same scam as google

Despite the recent announcement of "bad sites" filtering, the new search engine of Microsoft - bing.com - still shows scam and malware sites in sponsored link.

Try searching "spybot" (a good and free antispyware) on bing.com, and you'll probably end up with a scam and a malware in the first two sponsored links.
(See some screenshot (in french) here)

The same problem goes on for other types of search (try "clean registry").

Google made the same claim about filtering "bad" sites, but they perform no better (example in french, here).

Now remember IE8 "protection" relies on the same data from Microsoft, and Firefox "protection" uses Google data, and you have a good overview of the problem.
Do these browsers really protect you ?

The only reliable solution ? It's WOT, of course.

Beauty

And the beauty of the system is that you don't even have to reverse-engineer they ranking algorithm: You just have to pay them to appear in first position.

Brilliant.

WOT I hope is better

Google search always comes up with untrusted sites..

Up to you ?

Wouldn't it be up to you to make sure that your system is safe on the web. The only way you will get infected is by Browsing the web and for that you need a browser. No matter which one you use it falls on you to protect your interests.

If you are careless then , you can't blame Google or Bing. It doesn't matter what they advertise (safe or Not), it is you , in the end, that will suffer the consequences. Protecting your PC should be your first priority . You want to surf the Dark Side then, make sure you have the right tools to do it with. There are enough Good Volunteer sites on the web that will help with the necessary tools and help you install , configure and show you how it's done and operate .

WOT has a good base of intelligent and savvy users ready and willing to help. This should be one of the first places to be suggested at the store Before connecting to the web and surfing aimlessly . Also, asking a few questions at the store will usually help get you started. They might push the likes of Norton or McAfee but, at least it's a start. When you become a little more confident , you might even join a forum where, you will get the information to really need to take off on your own.

So, you can't just blame Google for the advertisements they post on their searches. They are a business and in that context , they are there to make Money just like MS. Everyone hates MS but, you still go out and buy their products. Want to make a difference? buy a Mac or use Ubuntu. BUT , you'll still have to use Google or Bing.

I DO blame them

So, you can't just blame Google for the advertisements they post on their searches.

I DO blame Google and Microsoft.
You can't have a high antimalware/antiscam stance while trading with those people and earning money from them. This is just utter bullshit.

Everyone hates MS but, you still go out and buy their products

No I don't. I use Linux.
I still use Google because no other search engine provides results of the same quality. But I don't trust them.
I hope I'm smart enough to detect malware and scam at first sight, but I'm not the concern: What I fear is for my friends, my family and other users. (And that's why I contribute to WOT).

They are fooled by the security gimmicks of Google and Microsoft, and they are probably inclined to trust sponsored link (because they are presented as first class links by the search engine).
And that's a problem.

Education plays a big part and WOT helps a lot, but it would be much better not to have those scams/malware in sponsored links in the first place.

Search engines have to put their efforts where they mouth is.

Search engines have to put their efforts where they mouth is.

They do , most of the time but, those Sponsored links are Paid for. You don't think that the people at Google or other search engines aren't aware of this. Like I said, they're a business,Big business, with Lots of employees. They have to feed those mouths and one easy way to do it is with sponsored links.

You want to help your friends and family ? Then , teach them to use Ubuntu or suggest that their next PC be a Mac. Word of mouth is far more effective than crying about what is wrong on the net.

Don't take this personally. I'm just expressing my own thoughts. Communication is a two way street. You take the good and leave the rest to the Trolls. This, I find , is the best way to get at info. that would only be discussed in private somewhere . You get the conversation going , stand back and listen . You'll learn a heck of allot more that way. So, don't get mad , get even. But, in a legal way.

Oh, and you are smart enough ! You are here aren't you.

Simple Solution

There's a FireFox add on called Customize Google:

It will filter out all that "Sponsored Link" crap. I use it and it does just fine.

I use it.

I use it, and that's what makes google bearable for me :-)

Adblock

Plus also blocks sponsored links in Google. :) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/186...

Oh... Google has just launched http://www.anti-malvertising.com/about
to fight against malware and scam advertising.

Our team's mission is to prevent malvertising in Google and partner ad properties.

We'll see the results in Google search engine, but I'm less than optimistic.

No WOT ratings in bing sponsored results

Oh... BTW I asked the WOT technical team if they intend to show the WOT rating circle on sponsored links in Bing search engine results, and it looks like it's impossible for now because all links point to *.r.msn.com

This is sad.

BTW (too): WOT ratings are not displayed in the french version of Bing. :-/

Re: Bing

WOT ratings are not displayed in the french version of Bing

Unbelievably, the French version of Bing is slightly different from the rest. It should start working once your add-on updates its search rules. You can also right click the WOT button and select "Check for updates..." to update them immediately.

Hey Seb !!

Salut Seb !

I'm also French but from Canada. We don't use the same expressions (like different dialects) so, I'll keep it in English.
I have to say that , your page is Very interesting. A little long but, with explicit explanations. Congratulations !!
I'm still using FF2 (long story) and the WOT circle doesn't show at all in Bing. I guess the new update doesn't support FF2 anymore. So, for now, I still use Google. But , when I'm Sandbox , I like to use Bing. it's different , with less ads and sponsored links. One thing I found while using Bing is that, there are Less relevant returns on certain searches. Especially the ones involving Maleware strings found in logs such as from HijackThis. But, the results that do come up are more "to the point" than Google's. Those are my impressions so far.

Bonjour Seb. !

Bing

Bing is worse because it has even more ads then Google.

用戶圖片

do a search

I searched both engines with the same word . Look what comes up ;

Bing :

Google :
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=internet+serv...

Count the Sponsored links in both

Wait a minute WAIT a minute

I think before having this heated debate on this topic, lets all ask ourselves this:
Why would you think that Microsoft would be the one to release a secure search engine in the first place?

We rate the websites, the WOT staff creates, and advertises the add-on, and together, we make it all happen.

search engines

I have used several search engines. I test, and I recommend to new users. I hate the ads regardless of where they are at. So I tell my new users don't click on the ads because right now they are not reliable, or secure. I introduced WOT to my users, and they could clearly see what I meant.

I really wish that places like Google or even Bing, and you normal every day websites would check these company ads out first before allowing them to advertise on their websites. Google for instance know a few of their ads are not secure, but they still advertise for them. Accountability goes out the window.
