Thu Aug 20 03:02:30 2009 — g7wexcite.com; has been around for a very long time (since 1995). It's a portal site like Yahoo, but never seemed to get the market share, I still have an old email address there; if I can just remember what it was... LOL.
Then there is vimeo.com, a site I lurk now and then, they get some interesting videos...
I have experienced nothing negative with these two sites, though vimeo is not in your current list, it too has the mindspark mentioned in the footer's copyright section. I suppose MindSpark has acquired these two domains along with the rest... I know there is no malicious content [directly] on either of these two domains.

I would know, I work for Mindspark, I've seen the source code. Don't confuse a required toolbar download and a homepage takeover to a crappy search engine with malware. I mean if you're going to relentlessly pursue IACCAP (which actually is quite reputable and has an impressive suite of websites), at least you should get your facts straight. IAC makes its money through legitimate business practices and acquisitions.
We don't track users, we don't serve popup ads (only once directly after toolbar download), and users have the option to uninstall the toolbar at any time with no adverse effects.

Many people don't want to or think its sketchy download a toolbar to use smiley central, but there's nothing malicious about the toolbar and nothing hidden in the download, and it can be uninstalled at any time. We change the homepage to use MyWebSearch, which a lot of virus and malware software do as well, but there is no adware, spyware or malware in any of our products.
a lotta people give Mindspark a bad rap because of the way they do things, and because we are guilty by association, given the similar practices of other, poor intentioned companies (hi-jacking homepages and installing things without users consent). On every download page, we make it clear what you are getting: a toolbar on your browser and MyWebSearch, and users are given the option of whether or not to make MyWebSearch.com their homepage. Or they can change it afterwards if they missi t.
Honestly, I hear what you guys are saying. I personally wouldn't trust us if I didn't work for them, cause downloading anything of the internet with the promise of "smileys" or "cursors" or "wallpaper" seems shady, I agree. But, I've seen the source code, seen the .exes. Its just a toolbar and a search provider. Search advertising is a revenue stream. There's nothing underhanded about it.

Indeed, I'm one of those people. And here's why:

Yes, they can be removed, but an unsuspecting noob will not uncheck and therefore install those things.
While Mindspark isn't the only vendor that does that "opt-in by default" nonsense (WinPatrol is noteworthy in that it is one of the few that DON'T), it is enough for me to give Mindspark a "bad rap". Maybe not enough for me to give it a red rating (on that basis alone), but coupled with listings as malicious in security blogs takes care of the red rating.
Rather than plead your case here at WOT, you might do better to see if you can get delisted on freepcsecurity. Colin's securiy blog is highly regarded here on WOT.

Thu Feb 25 18:44:58 2010 — mdb9170hey man. If you gotta hate on Mindspark for that reason alone, then go for it. But you'll also have to note how rare it is for someone NOT to opt in by default. It's just good business practice. Some big name examples are:
When you download adobe flash, the google toolbar comes with it unless you manually opt out.
When you upgrade to IE8, it sets itself as your default browser unless you manually change this.
If you upgrade to IE8 through yahoo, it comes default with the yahoo toolbar.
If you download iTunes, it automatically signs you up for newsletters unless you opt out.
So, your argument is pretty weak. Everyone does this, and not all of it is evil. I'm not here to argue my case with you guys, just saying...everyone should get their facts straight before making baseless accusations. This whole thread is a witch hunt. Someone pointed this thread out to me, knowing i worked here, and i merely decided to add some truth to these misconceptions.
This Colin guy or whatever gets his data from incorrect sources just as you get your info from WOT. Just because its popular doesn't mean its accurate.

Most "spyware and adware
Thu Feb 25 22:14:38 2010 — mdb9170Most "spyware and adware removal software" mis-label mindspark as such. It's an on going battle that our product team continues to wrestle with. As I've said before, we have been cleared by McAfee as being spyware and adware free.
Unwanted software is not the same as adware, spyware or malware. Its fine to call it "unwanted software", which is the definition Colin and I have agreed on as the justification for adding it to Malware databases. but lets call it what it is and not misrepresent it.
Registry changes are required for the search assistant. But it's not serving ads or tracking, its taking over 404 pages and serving search results through MyWebSearch.

"Evil" does not equal "bad rap"

Using opt-in by default doesn't make you "evil" and I never said that. I just used your phrase: "bad rap".
Citing others that do the same thing (and I did as much in my previous post: "While Mindspark isn't the only vendor that does that", so it isn't as if I "noted" Mindspark was unique in using opt-in) does NOT justify doing it. So what if MS does it? So also does CCleaner and OpenOffice and . . . so does that make it right?
And I wouldn't use the Google toolbar or the Yahoo toolbar as examples of good software. And what does IE setting itself as the default browser have to do with Mindspark setting MyWebSearch as the default search engine and homepage? They're two entirely different things.
The fact that others do it (which again I pointed out in my previous post) does not make any argument against doing it "pretty weak".

I actually did talk to "The colin guy". Nice guy, actually. At first I thought you guys were just following some newb gettng his data from heresay. We had a nice conversation over the last three hours about it, and I believe we've reached an understanding that mindspark products technically falls into a "grey" area of unwanted software and slight underhanded-ness that comes from auto opt in (which leads to home page take over. Hijack is such an ugly word. It's all there, most users just don't read the fine print).
By that definition, fine, sure. I'll concede to that. Mindspark products solicit unwanted software (I wouldn't want the search engine or the toolbar either), but I still stand by that we do not serve ads (except for paid search listings), nor do we track users. Satisfied?

For the most part, yes (except for the tracking cookie claim . . . which is relatively minor, since almost all sites plant cookies . . . was just a little incredulous that you would say "nor do we track users").
My compliments though for willing to listen and for understanding. Most people we encounter here on WOT that object to what we see just flat out dig their heels in and refuse to listen.
While the community may not embrace Mindspark (I don't), you as an individual are credible and welcomed I'm sure.
