The New WOT Beta is now Released!

Last month we announced  that a new WOT is on its way, and now we are ready to lift the covers of the beta version! Countless hours have been spent on listening to your feedback, analysing how people use WOT, and developing a new WOT with features that will not only improve the current user experience but will also serve as foundation for future upgrades that will strengthen WOT’s position as the most preferred website reputation & review service. The latest achievement of 80 million downloads and the increasing amount of monthly active users render us the responsibility to serve a growing audience with various needs and user habits. We truly believe that the new version will make a considerable change in WOT usage – by offering improved transparency and information quality.

What's new?

The new WOT comes with multiple improvements, but the major news surrounding the new WOT is the introduction of the categorization interface. This new categorization will provide greater transparency to the reasons behind users’ ratings and reviews. In practice, this means that when submitting a rating, you are asked to select one or more categories in order to provide supporting evidence for your assessment. These categories are then visible to other users helping them to make informed decisions whether to visit a site or not.

Image

Other significant change is the simplification of the reputation components, leaving just “Trustworthiness” and “Child Safety” as key components while the rest have been merged into the categories feature described above. And not to forget, there has been a complete redesign of the rating window and scorecard that will provide users a more pleasant rating and review experience.

Image

Take a test drive and let us know what you think – just by commenting on this post. You can also take a deep dive into detailed description of the changes. As a reward for your help, all registered beta users will get a “beta tester badge” on their user boards. Just remember to synchronize your account to get the badge!

Below you can find detailed information on how to download the beta version. Bear in mind that you should have Google Chrome or other Chromium based browser installed before downloading. No other browsers are supported at this point.

After downloading and installing WOT, please be prepared to spend a certain amount of time on familiarizing yourself with it and to help our developers to improve the quality of the new WOT by sending your feedback. Thanks!

Installation Instructions for Google Chrome

You can also find more detailed instructions here.

After downloading the (beta version), open Chrome and then:

  1. Save the add-on file (.crx) from this link to your computer (e.g. to Desktop)
  2. Go to Tools → Extensions ( chrome://extensions/ ). If you have already installed an existing WOT version, find it on the Extensions tab and disable it (by ticking Enabled) .
  3. Enable "Developer mode" at the top of the Extensions page of Chrome to be able to install the add-on from file
  4. Drag-and-drop the add-on file to the Extensions page of Chrome.
  5. Select “Add” in the pop-up window
  6. Synchronize the new add-on with your WOT profile (Check here for more details )
  7. You are now ready to test the new add-on.
  8. In case you wish to go back to old version, disable or remove the beta version and enable the old version. However, it is recommended to keep using the beta version until the public version is released.

RE: The New WOT Beta is now Released!

    Hi,

there is "Poor customer experience" in "Negative" but "Good customer exp." in "Positive" is missing.
    No "Entertaining" category anymore?

    --
I also miss "Comment statistics" overview its quite useful if there are a lot of comments.

[# I wrote this before I read the more detailed information; there is no reason for that statistics now.]

    --
    beta.mywot.com/en/settings also needs a renewal
[# a new settings page is available, visible with version 2.0.14 from 22.07.13]

    --
I'm curious how you will change the certificate appearance
    mywot.com/en/certificate/mywot.com

[# the privacy and vendor reliability category is removed, not that much change here]

    --
There is a problem with the new pop-up see: http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/1349/bvaf.jpg
if a site has no reputation "Show details and comments" is twice, the second link do not work

[# issue is solved with new addon (2.0.10 from 19.06.13]

    --

    UPDATE:
20.06. -Beside translation incompletion the color blind version is incomplete too see: http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/6637/eyq.png
[# both issues are fixed now]
    -

22.06. -there is a problem with the expand feature, text might disappear at the left side if you expand the form; see: http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6618/n3f.png

    --

All in all I like the new addon interface, especially that you can write, edit and delete a comment without entering its scorecard.
No crashes or (further) bugs experienced yet

    well done

    regards DiM1319

    Hi...
Is the beta version (extension) also available on Firefox? Because I use Firefox / Comodo IceDragon in most of my internet time. :)

Hi. No, there is no beta for FF. But Comodo Dragon is based on Chromium, so it might work with it. Try it with the same instruction.

It works with Comodo Dragon, which is based on Chrome (yes, I know that it is actually based on Chromium but to me Chrome and Chromium are synonymous), but it won't work on Comodo Ice Dragon because that browser is based on Firefox.

I do wonder why the Firefox addon wasn't developed either before or in parallel with the Chrome extension.

RE: The New WOT Beta is now Released!

I like the layout of the popup, which provides a very clear at-a-glance view of the reputation of a site.

I did notice that, although the sliders are not able to go below the 0%, the rating sliders can travel beyond the 100% and seem to snap to the "x" button. Is this meant to make it difficult for people to give maximum ratings, or just to make it easy to delete ratings?

Because Chrome allows for much more rapid development than Firefox, and we have a lot more user who use Chrome. Support for Firefox is coming before the final release.

RE: The New WOT Beta is now Released!

Tested the beta version (using Comodo Dragon) and here's my comment and impression:

-The "Good customer experience" and "Entertaining" was omitted, as one of the user said.

-The "controversial medicine" is placed in "Positive / neutral" category, instead of "questionable" or something.

-I like that every category has a description (for better understanding for new users)

-At the "settings", the blocking / warning switches are gone (for this time in beta), but the warning mode is much more effective and screened out the content than before. But for some reason, I like the "blocking" switch. For example, sometimes my brother (or some young guests) click "Go to this site" and tend to visit to a risky sites while I'm not aware of it, I'm out for something or while I'm sleeping.

-Noticed that you can now put your comments using the extension (instead of visiting the scorecard).

Overall, it was impressive, neat, maybe simple and I like the majority of the beta's features.

P.S.: I will wait for the Firefox / IceDragon version. :)

Have Chrome but never use....same with I.E.... Only use Mozilla Firefox.
Always use your information, though, and pass on your add-on whenever I can. Will you be doing the same for Firefox?

RE: The New WOT Beta is now Released!

The "Entertaining", "Good costumer experience", "Useful / Informative" should be added again (the three in the "Positive / Neutral, with "Entertaining being Neutral and "Good costumer experience" Positive, more specifically).

I feel like they're necessary because they're big categories. There are a lot of websites that are made to entertain people (YouTube, Kongregate etc.).

Also, every single website where you can buy stuff depends on the costumer's experience, so yeah.

Another idea is that there should be more categories. For example:

    [Positive / Neutral]
Anti-Malware - Helps protect your system against potencial malware... YES - NO
News website - Provides news to the reader... YES - NO

Well, if you mean development of "only have one button on panel" addons you may be right. Nothing more serious can be developed on Chrome anyway (Just NoScript, for example, no way to implement it in same functionality on Chrome)

Hi, greetings from Croatia, I am very satisfied with WOT, wich is on the childrens computer, too and now it is much safer as this user said when we go to sleep or smth similar... I agree wit this opinion from TKD_CD-ing and the metter of controversial medicine...Thank you all for the both versions of WOT and your effort to improve it, looking forward to the beta version and I'll wait the same as this user for the Firefox/Ice Dragon version. All best, keep up the good work and thank you TKD_CD-ing", your opinion and your knowledge for this issue (for me it's still new) is so far the best explained( for me and my family). Thank you all. But how about the scorecard in the web? Are it will still 4 groups rating (Trustworthiness, Vendor reliability, Privacy, Child Safety) or changed to be 2 groups rating (Trustworthiness, Child Safety)?

Just the two ratings bars - Trustworthiness and Child Safety.
The Child Safety ratings are retained so as to enable parents to use the child-blocking feature. The other ratings have been simplified into Trustworthiness, which makes sense because any issues with Vendor Reliability and/or Privacy can be addressed by the Trustworthiness ratings.

Hmm...a rather odd occurrence. The WOT button has recently started showing a small exclamation mark in the top left corner, which disappears when I click on the button. This seems to occur both in the beta and the normal buttons in every browser (Comodo Dragon, Firefox, and Opera). Any idea as to why this is happening?

It is not a problem for me since the WOT button still shows the correct colour doughnut but it would be good to know why it is happening.

Edit: Since posting this the issue seems to have stopped happening.

RE: The New WOT Beta is now Released!

I like the the new wot. it's logical how you incorporated the "Vendor Reliability" & "Privacy" components within the broad category of "Trustworthiness". When I used to rate with the old add-on, the rating I gave for Vendor Reliability & Privacy always had a direct bearing on how I rated the overall Trust of a website anyway. With the new interface I don't need to worry about rating those two redundant components anymore.

A big thing I was looking forward to seeing with the Beta version was the new comment categories. In particular I was hoping that "Phishing & Other scams" would be split into 2 categories, and I also wanted a separate comment category for "Privacy Issues" because in the past I was forced to post comments about serious privacy issues under the category "ethical issues".

Well all I can say is, I'm very happy to see both those changes with the new WOT. Well done.

This is all I can say after a 5 minute test run of the Beta version. I will devote more time to it when I can, and will no doubt be looking for something to complain about:)

    Wait, what?

You say you support Chrome first because it "...more rapid development than Firefox..." even though one has to jump through hoops just to install it? WHAT?! Really, Firefox doesn't have a rapid enough development cycle for you which is about to update its stable channel to version *22*?! Let me tell you something, the main reason for Chrome's popularity is Google's willingness to whore it on to users via popup links on their homepage and bundling it with 3rd party program installs.

and then 3rd party add on developers like you that support Chrome exclusively first especially since you are advertising the newest beta (which only has a chrome version available) on other browser versions of the addon - http://i.imgur.com/qOzIvDm.png

I'll really really wanted to try it out but prefer to not use a browser that has hard-coded phone home ties to the Google mothership to test the next version...

Don't see why Firefox can't be supported on the same level since its just as easy to develop for and even offers a wider range of extensibility than chrome's javascript/html "addons".
