    The Digsby thread

Didn't want this post to get buried way down in the Digsby thread because I think this "find" is important. This link not only reiterates what g7w said, but it refers to WOT.

Also don't want to flood this forum with a bunch of HTG links (did one recently), but this seems very pertinent:

    re: Digsby

Digsby, this has been covered previously, the argument is with the additional addons that could be installed, ie: Freeze.com, PC Confidential and a mass of other bloated BHO's and so on.

The problem lies with the revenue methods that W3i employ, and many novice users will simply download everything, we know this from experience and the calls for help.

Users do have the option of unticking many of the additional downloads as they do with many other well known applications which offer to change the Homepage and add a Toolbar, but there are still background downloads without the users knowledge or consent.

    InstallIQ was covered here:
    http://www.mywot.com/forum/2047-recipe-feeder-m...

Personally, I wouldn't download any of it as it is bloatware but it is the end users choice to make an informed opinion, and Digsby may be rated green, the addons are not, and I see the whole thing as posing a threat :-)

      Yes

Colin: "this has been covered previously"
That's why I put the link to the thread in my post.

      Colin: "the argument is"
Wanted to show that it's just not us here at WOT that know what the argument is.

Apparently in addition to HTG, MG knows the scam too.

Wish that all scams were this well publicized.

        Shady

The troubling part is that MajorGeeks tested the original installer and the Digsby people seem to have knowingly done a "bait-and-switch" move. Not very trustworthy but at least he knows to keep an eye on future updates.

    WOW

    That's WAY over the line!

It's an InstallIQ installer and it's from Freeze.com.

      MajorGeeks

I contacted the owner of MajorGeeks and he quickly tested and removed Digsby from their downloads.

Edit: He found the actual Digsby installer and it is now hosted at MG's. http://majorgeeks.com/Digsby_d6022.html

      Tested and approved.

Concerning the HTG / Digbsy link...

After reading the comment left by Erick from the Digsby team

I submitted a simple comment myself

my point of view on Digsby at the Web of Trust Forum:

      Posted

Your comment was posted, and I left one myself (obviously negative with regard to Digsby).

Also made it a point to visit the Digsby site and give it a red rating! What a bunch of bums!

BTW, not only rated it red but agreed with your comment on the WOT scorecard . . . now is a +3.

        Debbie M

        I made another reply...

        @ Debby M

Yes, InstallQ is TRUSTe Certified; no doubt about that.
The problem lies with *what* it installs – those programs are not TRUSTe Certified.

        A simple analogy would be:
I have a Samsonite suitcase, it’s certified by Samsonite as such and has the Samsonite label on it.
When I open the suitcase, I find a lot of garbage contained within it and none of the garbage is Certified by Samsonite.

The *idea* of forcing a user to Opt Out of 3rd party installed programs, that may or may not have any similarity with the desired software being installed, is the same as sending spam via email before the subscribed newsletter is received; sure we can delete the spam as trash, but why do we have to view it first? It shouldn’t be there at all. And when installing any software, there shouldn’t be any other software involved.

          Good one

          And added this:

          @ Debby M,

Can you expand on the “have found significant errors in their reporting” thing you said about WOT? Specifically, what are the “significant errors” and where are they “reported”?

If you’re talking about scorecard comments, they are made by individual users and are NOT necessarily the “official” views of WOT. WOT simply provdes the facility for comments, but does not censor those comments (unless they are blatantly vulgar or otherwise offensive). You can make any comment you want, like “Digsby is great” or “Digsby is crap”.

So if that’s the case, your disagreement would be with the individual user that made the comment and not WOT staff. And BTW, comments are NOT ratings. While comments may reflect a users opinion and hence rating, they are NOT ratings themselves.

I’d like to see the specific WOT “significant error” (NOT a user comment) and where it is.

          TIA

          BJ
