RE: Have you ever fallen victim to an online scam?

I had someone cancel an ebay auction and they emailed everyone who posted a bid. They sold to all of us but becaue it didn't officially happen through the auction we all lost our money.

RE: Have you ever fallen victim to an online scam?

Not a scam per se, just hacked, seriously creepy and upsetting, lost 2 computers, a printer…cost me almost $8,000.00 But it forced me to learn as much as I could about security. It would have even been "funny", if the people who did this had NOT used one of my hotmail accounts for such laughs as "Wow, is this guy freaking out"! One reason I send any web cam pics through an encrypted separate system. Even so, I rarely use it.

Saw an interesting article on replacing passwords with a variant of public key encryption, I'd love that and will dig up and provide the url, NOT a link…

RE: Have you ever fallen victim to an online scam?

I am very careful on-line. I never click on links sent to me in email unless I was expecting the sender to send it to me. If the site doesn't use HTTPS I don't create a login. I have my family take the various "can you spot the fake" quizzes available from the various security sites to get them thinking about what to look for.

Working to stop malware, viruses, and Internet fraud one web site at a time.

I've never been scammed, what I carry is a high value of Common Sense and Cynicism. Never do I trust another online user, with no personal information whatsoever.

RE: Have you ever fallen victim to an online scam?

No, but I have had close calls
A friend was helping me find jobs, and she ended up sending 2 phishing links. WOT had it as red, I did some URL scans, and it was blacklisted. Also, the comments said it was phishing as well. I warned her and recommended WOT.

Thankfully, no, I haven't ever fallen victim to a scam. Hopefully it stays that way.

RE: Have you ever fallen victim to an online scam?

That depends on what is meant by “close calls”. I’ve received quite a few suspicious emails, but I’ve never clicked on any of their content, nor have I viewed images to which any suspicious emails linked.

I used to write clever signatures like you. Then I took an arrow in the frontal lobe…

RE: Have you ever fallen victim to an online scam?

The results of this poll are very surprising to me! More people here have had close calls or have been scammed than the amount of people who have not been scammed.

Some online scams are becoming harder to detect.
I've had an attempt to steal my PayPal account, but I was able to stop it in time.

I think I know how to recognize scam pretty well. Online scam really is a plague, police should do more about it.

I have not yet been a victim, but they do get more and more sophisticated and I worry for my children who are entering this world of online scams now.

RE: Have you ever fallen victim to an online scam?

Sadly yes. A few years ago (or even less), when I was not yet so aware of the meaning, what 'Phishing' or 'Scam' is, I was leaving my personal info (e-mail, name, age,...) almost on every site that asked me to do so, besides that, I have used TOO MANY IDENTICAL passwords for different sites. what happened and what I've changed?

    1. My credit card identity was stolen and I had to get a new one (luckily not much damage was done);
    2. Gradually I noticed, that I am receiving far more spam on my e-mail account, that I did before I was so active on the net.
    3. Once, one of my on-line forums identity was hacked and used instead of me without my knowledge (see my comments for the site www.rt.com )
    4. Possibly also my primary e-mail was once hacked.

Now, although I'm not an IT expert, I use most of the security measures that an 'experienced' but otherwise layman user can implement:

    a) I avoid such practices I mentioned above.
    b) I'm much more careful, which sites I visit.
    c) I use the newest AV software and a firewall and also real-time protection.
    d) I'm using plug-ins as DISCONNECT, HTTPS Everywhere and Adblock Plus.

I almost fell for a PayPall password stealing scam, but luckily used my brains just before caving in. Other than that, not been scammed that I know of.

RE: Have you ever fallen victim to an online scam?

Quite some time ago I was desperately looking for a job. I received an email offering the job possibility of looking after international financial transfers. Turned out to be an organised crime outfit .... Fortunately that came to light before I had actually done anything for them, but there is caveat emptor here. If you do arrange transfers for criminal groups, the police are none too impressed with the fact that you didn't check it out in far more detail first! And you may well find yourself facing criminal charges yourself, so be careful out there!

    Dollarade.com.

I was looking for a free version (don't tell...) of Brink, then i found dollarade. It seemed like a decent website. Until it didn't allow me in because i had adblock! That is an instant red flag there. Then when i went onto WOT's reviews, everyone said "Scam!" and "Viruses!" Then, i found out, that there's surveys and such, and when you complete them, you don't get your "Free Download". When you get on the site, though, it installs a virus that turns pages into what dollarade basically is. No adblock, no antiscript, no blockers AT ALL, and ads EVERYWHERE. Thank god for WOT.

Nah, but I haven't gotten involved with much on the internet. I also have almost been scammed maybe once or twice.

If my reviews are outdated, let me know (EDIT 7/11/2015 GOLD MEMBER HOORAY!) mein

RE: Have you ever fallen victim to an online scam?

Yes. I was victim of a complex hacking scheme during a messy divorce. I thought I had all the tools I needed to keep me safe...I was quite wrong.

Luckily, I caught on to what was going on rather quickly without any significant damage being done to me personally or financially; however, decided to teach others about how to stay safe online. I started a web site privacywatchdogs.net. It is actually still a work in progress, but when finished, I plan on having it be the largest Internet privacy resource on the web.

I now consult consumers and companies about simplistic ways to avoid the malicious threats out there, such as using a VPN, browser extensions, good anti-virus software and a change in browsing habits.

Being safe online takes patience and a willing to break old habits. However, you don't have to be a 'techy' to learn and use everything one should have in their Internet privacy 'tool box.'
