Be aware that the installation contains unwanted software

The codec itself is *safe*. Make sure that you do the custom installation and NOT the "easy" installation. That way, you can unselect bloatware (potential malware) and toolbar from installation. I took 2 stars off because there is no way to unselect an alternative media player called "media player classic". Don't select file associations and don't use the newly installed media player if you don't want to.

Seems fine to me but if in doubt try downloading direct from the cnet site at <http://download.cnet.com/Media-Player-Codec-Pack/3001-13632_4-10749065.html?hlndr=1> .

As with all freeware they try to add bundle-ware to make some money. you should always choose advanced/detailed install and uncheck toolbars, search providers and unknown/unwanted add on software. Even Norton File Insight says it is good...

Der eigentliche Inhalt (Codecpack) ist in Ordnung und funktioniert gut. Der Hacken an der Sache liegt im Installationsprogramm. Hier genau hingucken was da angeboten wird. The real content (Codecpack) is ok, but while the install-process you must exactly read all points. The installer offers you unwanted software. So if you read all options and unmark all points about this unwanted software, the codecpack is ok.

I agree this is a perfectly safe site --but as its download is connected to a CNET download, the process is cleanest by signing into CNET after registration to avoid toolbars etc which are hard to opt out of with a non-member download. (CNET membership is free.) . When installing this site's extremely useful Media Codec Pack, via CNET membership, select "easy installation" but opt out of everything else (unchecking Dealio Toolbar, Yahoo default search engine) prior to the install. After download is completed, opt out of 21-day trial of another service by unchecking, then clicking on cancel rather than install. The installation of unwanted items is a CNET practice. not of the Media Codec Pack itself. Distributors of free software are increasingly turning over downloading of their set-up files to CNET so they don't have to take advertising to cover their online costs. As always, the downloader needs to beware even of high-rated sites like CNET.

This site is linked to from ***** in the Windows 7 Compatibility Center. The file download is via CNET ***** or the sites own servers. The files are digitally signed. Perhaps false positives have caused issues.

I don't know where jeff134 got his information, but it is entirely wrong. The file is actually downloaded from CNET for Gods sake! As far as "distribution of malware, drive by viral downloads, or spamming." ??? They don't even try to set a cookie! Come on guys, stop using 3rd party reviews and start using some common sense!
