This site, which appears to be a bot/crawler, is massively spamming one of my sites, and messing up my Google Analytics data with 100% bounce rates from this sites referral spam.
The site does now appear to have a removal request form at semalt (dot) com/project_crawler.php however, it remains to be seen whether removal requests are respected.
In the meantime, avoid this unethical/spammy site!
Semalt is engaged in a massive refferal spam campaign fueled by malware and computer hijacking. In addition They violate users privacy via hijacking their computers with software embedded in the music player soundfrost.
I monitor a lot of business's websites from diverse industries and locations throughout North America. Most of their analytics (especially wordpress websites) show a high volume of referral traffic from semalt dot com. This skews the data for business owners and is undesirable for a variety of other reasons.
Additionally they are hijacking hundreds of thousands of computers and turning them into part of their bot network to continue with this spam. Just do a search for what is semalt, or how to block semalt or anything semalt related and you can view page after page of information and documentation illustrating this.
"Semalt botnet hijacked nearly 300k computers"
Another good read (linked below) overviewing them with links to news and information...it is dated at this point but I still found this to informative: "What the heck is a Semalt?" http://www.tenrec.com/site-security/what-is-semalt/
"Semalt infecting computers to spam the web"
Here is the documentation illustrating them violating user privacy. (from the post Semalt & Soundfrost caught spying http://blog.nabble.nl/post/93407897762/semalt-soundfrost-caught-spying):
Soundfrost violates users privacy by collecting data about which websites their users visit and sending it to an external server
Soundfrost doesn’t ask permission to collect or upload probably save this data
Soundfrost doesn’t use this data in any way which is beneficial for the user.
Block them from your website and do not fall for their services as an online marketing/analtyic company.
Note the above links I referenced were the sources that I used when researching, I am in no way affiliated with those sites or their content...just sharing the information I used to research the semalt site.
They refuse to honor robots.txt, they spam your logs with their site information, and kill your stats in google analytic.
Dang near every one of their bots that hits my sites all have IP addresses associated with email spammers, comment spammers, or forum spamming.
This spam site is now freaking me out! It is sending viral spam bot to my site and please don't visit this site.
It will send more and more spam bots, if you visit it.
Referrer spamer bot
184.108.40.206 - "GET / HTTP/1.0" http://100dollars-seo.com/try.php?u=http://semalt.com "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/36.0.1985.143 Safari/537.36"
This website uses unethical "referral spam" black hat SEO techniques to falsly increase their numbers. Check your analytics and I'd bet that they have hit your website under one of their many fake web addresses that are 301'ed over to Google. This site is about 50% or more of all referral spam on the internet.
Referral spam. The site uses a bot which spams their site as a referral. It is essentially advertising itself through spam. Once you visit their site, you are required to sign up to view anything more than a login page.
Avoid dealing with this company.

The bots from this site show up as a normal user and use referrer links to link back to their site meaning they are rendering all of the website on their crawler to purposely drop that link. The bots from this site do not follow the robots.txt rules
