Mariebergsskogen is a city park with a unique history and a bright future. As residents of Karlstad, we are proud to be able to take our guests here on an outing to enjoy the countryside, the traditional culture of Värmland and some of the many activities on offer. For many of us, Mariebergsskogen is like a second home, a place we always long to be. The park is home to Sweden’s first Play Garden, designed by architect Helena Bjarnegård of White Arkitekter, Värmland culinary traditions at Terrassen, the Naturum Värmland visitor centre, Lillskogen’s farm animals, a tourist train and heritage buildings. The whole area is a gift from Dr Conrad Höök, who lived in the manor house in the late 19th century. He loved his forest so much that he wanted it to be preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. When the City of Karlstad accepted the donation in 1896, a promise was given that Mariebergsskogen would be protected as a city park for all time. And that vision lives on! The park develops year after year, making it forever the place for play, experiences and recreation that every generation of children loves.
