Is buycostumes.com Safe?

I don't like being lied to. Their privacy policy is shady. These are direct quotes: "We at ***** value your business, and trust. Therefore, we will not sell, rent, or give away any customers' e-mail address to other businesses." So far so good. Right? Keep reading: "We may also share information we collect at our site with other members of the BUYSEASONS family (BuyCostumes.com is owned by BUYSEASONS, Inc.). They may use this information to offer you products and services that may be of interest to you. " OK, so they will share it with other not named and unknown divisions of the same company. They did claim not to share with 3rd parties so internal sharing can't be that bad right? Well keep reading... "If you have placed an order with our company, we may share your mailing address with other reputable companies. We do this so that you can receive mailings and offers from those companies for products or services we think you might like." So they stone cold lied about not sharing with 3rd parties! They may claim in their defense that you can opt-out(something the average user isn't going to discover buried in all the fine print- and they know it) by this statement: "However, if you would like to have your name put on our do-not-share list, please contact us and we'll update this information so you don't receive future mailings." That doesn't sound so bad- but above it there was this: " You can request to stop receiving mail not only from individual companies but from whole categories of mailers including Credit Offers, Catalogs, Magazine Offers, and Other Mail Offers. This is a great site to take control of the amount of mail you receive but it could take up to three months for your removal request to process so you still may receive emails and/or catalogs until that time." So they sold your information to the Direct Marketers Association and you have to take the step of opting out- which takes 3 up to 3 months. And then to top it off if people don't know how to block ads then there is this: "We may allow third-parties, including our authorized service providers, advertising companies, and ad networks, to display advertisements on our site. These companies may use tracking technologies, such as cookies, or web beacons, to collect information about users who view or interact with their advertisements. Our website does not provide any personal information to these third parties. This information allows them to deliver targeted advertisements and gauge their effectiveness." It also should be noted that when they claim not to use personal information aggregated information is very easy to deconstruct and identify individuals. Therefore any time users read statements like that it cries out for blocking trackers en-masse. When they claim annonymity in the real world it doesn't ring true. The bottom line: ---------------------------- They lied about not selling, renting or sharing your data. Customers may think that they were just buying a costume and they just got their privacy butchered...
