Is consumerist.com Safe?

The site has good intent, but the quality of posts has deteriorated since losing Ben Popken. That alone doesn't deserve a red dot, but other issues do. They have had multiple issues with passwords including the massive Gawker network exploit. Just recently, Google has found that something on the site was distributing malicious content. While I doubt the site owners would do such a thing, the lack of security permitting this is bothersome. The site has just had too many problems over time for my taste and I have removed it from my bookmark list.

This used to be a good site to go to for consumer-related issues and advice. Now it just seems to be a site dedicated to bad-mouthing companies without knowing the full story, posting articles with snarky insults, and allowing commenters to rampage freely. The normal content is usually suitable for children, but the comments go virtually unmoderated, so I wouldn't let a child browse the site on their own.

During an issue with people claiming that RadioShack forced them into donating, they stated that the information I sent them about how our store had about 5 or 6 customers a day who accidentally pressed the "Accept" button on the cc terminal (thinking it was the "accept charge" button) was irrelevant to the situation. Clearly they over dramatize certain situations just to keep interest. Otherwise, I really do enjoy this site.

This is one of the best consumer watch sites out there with lots of helpful info on how to rectify problems. It is linked with Consumer Reports. Some of the photos aren't pretty, but some consumer problems aren't pretty...that is rare though. It isn't necessarily a site you would recommend to a child, but why would a child be concerned with business practices anyway?
