MyNetWatchman is a benevolent utility that gathers [aggregates] data about BOTs that probe the ports of our computers. Volunteers install the MyNetWatchman client on their computers. When the computers' firewalls block an incoming port-probe, the firewall creates a small entry in a log that includes the IP address of the offending prober. The MyNetWatchman client copies the log entry, and sends it to "MyNetWatchman-Central," which aggregates everyone's log entries, and reports the worst port-probing offenders to their respective ISPs. I was running MyNetWatchman for many years and appreciate their system. After adding a router to my computers, the "hardware firewall" in the router stopped port-probes from hitting my software firewalls. With no more firewall log entries, I had to stop participating in the MyNetWatchman project. It is interesting to see that MyNetWatchman created and is offering an anti-spyware scanner. Unlike fake "security software" that is omnipresent, does harm, and provides no benefit (Be Careful out there!), it is absurd to name MyNetWatchman as one of the bad guys. I'm trying to raise malwarepatrol at malware.com.br, which seems to be responsible for one of the negative ratings for MyNetWatchman that is entered into WOT, but instead of getting their website, all I get is a Server Timeout message. So, we got one negative rating against a helpful security-utility that is based on comments from an alleged website that may or may not have ever existed. On the other hand, listings on BrowserDefender are also responsible for a negative rating. BrowserDefender's webpage has PCTools' logo on it. I see lots of confirmation that BrowserDefender is truly a part of PCTools, and we know that PCTools is legitimate. I'll have to ask the administrator of MyNetWatchman to email PCTools and see if he can get them straightened out. It is possible that PCTools' website-testers have misinterpreted the malware signatures that the MyNetWatchman scanner has in its code that it uses to test for malware. It's a problem when one legitimate piece of security software misjudges another legitimate piece of security software, and that's what seems to be happening here.
