In a recessionary time when more small businesses are closing than opening on the high street, I sometimes try to favor the small business, looking for a personal touch and a fair deal for my hard earn money. The first clue was not getting even an offer of a cup of tea in the coldest week of winter when I was seated in a chilly office to nicely discussed the order. There was some obvious apprehensions when I called to say I was having 2nd thoughts and would like to discuss some options. Lastly, after a couple of emails, I received the letter below making no mention the Order was suppose to take 8-10 weeks or any mention (by said employee) on the phone of the whole deposit being used to purchase something else without a predefined limit. " 21st February 2012 BREACK OK CONTRACT Order ##### Dear Mr W Raph, You visited our shop Watling Goldsmiths, 15 East St, Lacock, on the 2nd of February 2012. You had an appointment (staff member named). You designed with her and ordered an 18ct white gold three stone diamond tind with diamond set shoulders. The order value is £#,### you paid a £1,100 deposit. You phone on the 14th and 15th of February 2012 and email me on the 17th Feburary and cancelled this order. Deposits are non refundable. I have started you ring, but as a gesture of good will at this point I have no intenion of chasing you to complete this contract. As a further gesture of good will I am willing to give you a discount of £500 on a new order or stock piece purchase to the value of £3,000 or more. This offer has no time limit to it. Your sincerely, John Watling on behalf of Watling Goldsmiths "
