WOT goes social – Preview the beta version now!
Wed 16 Mar 2011 09:00:35 AM UTC — annaleenaSocial networking - on Facebook, Twitter and elsewhere - is a big part of what people are doing daily on the internet. Social media allows messages to spread far and fast and become popular, even viral. When the messages come from someone that you know and trust, it’s often perceived as safe. Put these factors together, and you've got a very tempting target for scammers and hackers. Typically, a scammer takes over an account and uses it to spread links which are contaminated, lead to phishing or malicious sites, or intend to capture more accounts.
Wouldn't it be great to know, from the very first glimpse, if the links your Facebook friends are sending you can be trusted?
As useful as shortened URLs are when the amount of characters are limited, like on Twitter, they come with a risk: It’s difficult to know where the random mix of characters of a URL redirects the user.
Wouldn't it be great to know, from the very first glimpse, if the shortened URLs your Twitter followers are sending you can be trusted?

Sounds good, but will still be biased. See how long it takes them to remove this comment
RE: WOT goes social – Preview the beta version now!
None of your comments have ever been removed, why do you think this one is any different?
RE: WOT goes social – Preview the beta version now!
Looks good. I think it would also be awesome to see something that could tell the difference between real Facebook apps and fake ones (hint, hint)...
RE: WOT goes social – Preview the beta version now!
So true. I hate it when I click an app and it sends me to some random website. D:<
RE: WOT goes social – Preview the beta version now!

Quick test:
good link: http://bit.ly/e1ykr1 | points to forum topic: Domain Rating Check Tool - a request
bad link: http://bit.ly/exf4E1 | points to [dead site] gmhyopj.ru - scorecard
[edit]
why are blog post content width smaller than forum post widths?
the right-side bar should be the same, so should the remainder of the left-side...

Just installed the beta and seems to work fine right now.
Interesting scorecard URL format for shortened links: http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/_p_je4fksrvjb3q.... This just opens the scordcard for gizmodo.com.

Now our friendly web supervisor can uncover those hidden links. No longer do I need to rely on userscripts for decoding shortened urls, as hopefully more short-url services are added to WOT in the future.
This also makes rating such links easier.
EDIT: I ran across a roadblock: even after installing the beta and restarting the browser, I'm not seeing WOT providing ratings for short-urls in Twitter. Also, the "test" that one of the commenters put above doesn't really help, as WOT only providing rating for bit.ly and not the actual link that the short-url points to. Perhaps this is because I'm using Firefox 4 RC1? Can any one provide a way to debug the add-on and see where the problem may be? I'm not getting log messages from the Error Console relating to WOT.
RE: WOT goes social – Preview the beta version now!
The add-on is compatible with Firefox 4. Go to the list of installed add-ons and make sure the version number is 20110315. Uninstalling the add-on and reinstalling it might solve the problem. You can also try creating a clean Firefox profile for testing if nothing else helps.
RE: WOT goes social – Preview the beta version now!
I managed to resolve the issue, and it is working great with short-url links. Thank you.
RE: WOT goes social – Preview the beta version now!
Great!
RE: WOT goes social – Preview the beta version now!
I wish WOT was compatible with the DuckDuckGo search engine. :-(
RE: WOT goes social – Preview the beta version now!
DuckDuckGo already supports WOT.
RE: WOT goes social – Preview the beta version now!
Missed the beta version, no more available, oh well need to be quicker :D
I'm noticing more and more people are getting spammier and scammier links on their wall pages so definitely a nice addition. Personally I really like the new shortened URLs warning as I get them sent to me often and I have never trusted URL shortner services, to many scammers abuse the service with their malicious links, so definitely a very good addition to the WOT service/system.
The update is now in progress
