Is babbel.com Safe?

Spammy site that lets people feel like they're learning a foreign language, whilst making all manner of outrageous claims and just lying. Ultimately, they want you to pay for worthless crap to avoid the spam. That's the internet's version of extortion. "10 Tricks To Learn Any Language By Next Friday". Yeah. People actually believe that. Every word of their advertising is objectionable scammy mealy mouthed crap. If they're so good with language, why is their advertising blurb the worst abuse of it ever? "this app made by 100 linguists gets you speaking a new language in 3 weeks". Sure. 1). repeated requests refuse to disclose who these "linguists" were, what their qualifications are, what constituted "made by", and over what time period. Bottom line, it's just the usual sucker-come-on throwing some "authorities" name around. 2). "gets you". You don't have to learn, memorize or all that nasty stuff. IT will get you just doing it, even if you don't want to. 3). Is the solution to everything "an app"? I've been writing application software for 30 years and most the new mobile apps are just trojan marketing platforms without any new functionality. 4). "speaking". I've studied languages for 10 years I'd say I BARELY "speak". Knowing a few words is not speaking. AND, it's going to do it in three weeks. This is a classic con. Tell the mark what they want to hear. And, if there were any more doubt, "SayNoToDrugs" rates it highly. Have not seen ONE scam that that one doesn't pop up to praise. Must be the most used misinformation merchant on this site. Even has to try and spin his damned screen name. What? We're supposed to see that and so, "Oh, sounds like a straight shooter". No, sounds like a paid disinformation artiste.

I believe Babbel is a wonderful tool for assisting the difficult, often arduous, process of learning a foreign language.  I agree with many of the other reviewers - the spam is overbearing. The website is "pushy", constantly pestering you to become a subscriber. It's, unfortunately, a trend that appears to becoming popular.
