Is chicagovps.net Safe?

I don't have any complaints about the business itself. However, I would not recommend their starter KVM virtual private server. I've had significant reliability issues with it. Perhaps one of their more expense offerings would have better reliability.

chicagovps.net in and of themselves is an IaaS provider. There may be sites that they host that are questionable but that is true of any infrastructure provider and as such I think those sites should be rated alternatively. Chicago VPS provides cheap reliable servers.

I have had good service from chicagovps for years until they null routed one of my VPS' because they claim it was sending spam. MEANWHILE, NO SPAM HAS BEEN SENT, less than 10 emails get sent a month on that VPS and they get sent only to me, the "excessive packets" they supposedly detected on port 25 I can only assume to be attempts to gain access to my SMTP server (postfix) which according to logs none have managed. The point is, they will null route your VPS effectively making it useless if they detect "too many packets" on port 25 regardless of what it is. Then they want you to pay an extra monthly fee to increase packet limits else the VPS is useless and you can cancel it. So if you decide to use chicagovps their VPS' are good for the price however don't bother if you want to send email or even just run postfix or virtualmin in my case which includes postfix for sending email.

Poor performance of VPS's and massive overselling. Plus the company's customer database was hacked in both November 2012 and June 2013 and the entire contents of their database were posted on the Internet both times exposing all customer details (threads dealing with the hacks and exposure of customer data are on web hosting industry forums webhostingtalk.com, lowendtalk.com, and vpsboard.com). During both of the hacks entire servers were wiped and customers lost their websites and other data. The company's WHMCS client area database was also hacked in October 2013. The owner Chris Fabozzi has limited technical knowledge and up until January of 2013 was also working as a sales associate at Kohl's Department Stores to support himself while also playing CEO of ChicagoVPS at night (this info is verifiable by looking at Fabozzi's LinkedIn profile). Fabozzi has also posted the personal information of people on LowEndTalk.com, a site owned by his best friend who runs ColoCrossing. Avoid. This company survives by luring people in with cheap prices but the poor service and their even poorer security practices and unethical behavior make their service not even worth the prices they charge.

Business model appears to be contingent or strongly reliant upon scam-hosting, and driveby distribution of the malware including keylogging trojans and other deceptions intended to proliferate phish forms that phone home through dynamic VPS. Sites masquerading as counterfeit goods dealers - 3rdworld ghetto apparel/accessories such as fake namebrand shoes, sunglasses, tracksuits, handbags & watches are used as the bait.
