ads/tracking -- privacy invasive

I use Ensighten at a financial services company, where risk review is extremely rigid. I found no privacy or online tracking risks using Ensighten whatsoever. For the uninitiated, Ensighten provides a suite of tools to web site and mobile app owners to deploy web analytics and other script tags. It's really no different than adding Google Analytics or marketing tags to a webpage directly -- with Ensighten, it is just much, much, much easier to manage all the tags in one place.

Anyone who thinks this site is malicious or not suitable for children is a joke and fully does not understand how the internet works. Stop scaring people about anonymous tracking. No one is tracking who you are except the government. Legitimate companies with Ensighten, Adobe, Webtrednds and others are anonymously tracking trends of what you are doing so the sites you visit can better tailor the user experience to it's audience. Also, Ensighten doesn't track you at all. It is a tool that allows web site owners to add JavaScript tags to their site in an easier manner. So IF they are tracking you then it is the website and NOT Ensighten that is doing so...

From their own site (they want to help other sites "own" your data: "Transform the way you collect, OWN, and activate omni-channel data, making it possible for 1:1 personalization in real-time, everywhere." "Accelerate marketing-driven revenue with an open marketing platform." "Tags Manage" In other words, they TAG you, TRACK your activities, PROFILE you, and otherwise violate your PRIVACY. NO THANK YOU. NOBODY OWNS my data but me! As Apollo702 says, their "Privacy" policy is not to be trusted.

Interesting conflict of interest here: Norton Safe Web states that it "has analyzed ensighten.com for safety and security problems [and] found no issues with this site." The punchline is that Norton Safe Web utilizes javascript from nexus.ensighten.com on its own site. How can NSW expect to be taken seriously? I assume that other sites have similar conflicts. General policy, then, could be to either (a) refrain from rating affiliated domains; or, (b) if the domain's rated, state clearly that the affiliation exists, and provide links to ratings from unaffiliated sites. Not sure if this is the right place for this post, or where the right place would be, but I feel it's an important issue (and I'm not registering with NSW just to post one comment).

You've rated this website as red, "Poor", for children, but other than one person who admittedly rates all websites no better than the lower end of the green, "I Trust" band when it comes to suitably for children, and some paranoia from people who don't want to be tracked under any circumstances, I see no evidence in the comments to justify this.

Unfortunately, scripts from this site are apparently required in order to do things like check out an order or view one's credit card account at target.com.

I gave it an other and a yellow flag and I will lay out my reasoning. I should disclose that part of my business is reading legalese and making tech work for common people. I have read a zillion user agreements and privacy policies and they tend to fall into 2 and 1/2 distinct patterns. Ultimately I gave it a yellow flag because I certainly have seen worse agreements than this. Utlimately it isn't doing anything all that terrible. Part of the problem istheir wording contains so much doublespeak that it sounds worse than it actually is. I see this problem all of the time. It is true that part of law is using unusually throrough language- and that is for good reason. Nothing should be left to chance. Here is where the problem comes in: Generally when agreements are favorable to users they go out of their way to say so and the agreements tend to be shorter. They point out how it is favorable, they have nothing to hide and they really want you to know it. Therefore they don't have to bury anything- making the terms short. When they are longer and loaded with doublespeak that is an indicator that they are trying to hide things. One has to read it multiple times to digest what the heck they just said and really scour phrase after phrase and usually the results aren't pretty. The 3rd category is when an agreement isn't as ominous as it sounds- but the overly done wording makes it sound frightening- and I think that is what we have here.

The ensighten.com scripts are required to access the American Express Secure Message Center. I rated the website at the lowest score within the "I trust" band. . . . I believe that no website is suitable for children unless monitored by a responsible adult. * * * * * * * Tags send data about a web page and page visitors to third-party vendors who provide digital marketers with essential marketing data and services, affecting website function as well as form. The most common types of digital marketing services delivered via tags are: web analytics pay-per-click (PPC) tracking social media interaction affiliate marketing behavioral targeting testing & optimization personalization consumer surveys ad networks product comparison

The web analytics services of ensighten are used by Monster.com. The internet is free because of ad and data that is mined using analytics services. If you don't like it, use Firefox with noscript installed to block the stuff.

This appears to be a service that allows websites to track user behavior on their own site. It is not a cross-site tracking service, nor is it an ad server. It is used on the American Express site, presumably to help customize the presentation to the user's needs. I don't see this as being a privacy or security issue. The full details of the product are easily accessible on the ensighten.com website.

Contrary to what another comment says, they do have a front-facing website. They appear to be just another web analytics service. Block or allow it at your own discretion, depending on how you feel about web analytics services. It shouldn't do horrible things to your system.

The site seems compeletely opaque -- you have to log on, but there's no way for us unwashed masses to register. I have trusted sites that link to this one, but I have no idea what it does. I have accordingly rated it very poorly as a caution to others.
