Radical fringe neo religious cult founded in 1974 by Bonnie Nettles and Marshall Applewhite a.k.a. Ti and Do a.k.a. Bo and Peep, the organization's beliefs and philosophy is best described as Ufology, New Age Spirituality and a bit of Christian millenarianism. The organization is infamous for the the mass Murder/Suicide that Marshall Applewhite a.k.a. "Do" was responsible for facilitating in San Diego, California USA on march 26, 1997. I do not recommend anyone getting involved with radical fringe organizations. In summary this is a questionable website run by a disreputable fringe counter culture neo religious cult, do not visit this website that is my advice.

Messed up stuff, but nothing dangerous or compromising. Just a really old cult website.

The remnants of the infamous suicide cult
Helpful
The remnant of a dangerous death cult that should have been shut down long ago.

The site appears to be connected to the Heavens Gate cult. I will be the first to admit I have my qualms with the cult, but the site itself appears to be safe and that is what is important to me.

Their claims about the alleged spacecraft behind Hale-Bopp was total BS.

It is getting bookmarked only for historical purposes of sites that somehow have survived over the years. The actual contents are horrendous.

You shouldn't rate a site poorly simply because you disagree with what it's saying. There is nothing gruesome or shocking or even unsafe on this site whatsoever. This site is the (outdated) homepage of the new religious movement (not cult; technically any religion, or even group activity such as sports, can be called a "cult.") Heaven's Gate, who are most notably known for a mass suicide in 1997. This site is extremely important for the research and understanding of this movement as well as other movements, including new branches of established religions. They have "alternative" beliefs, yes, but if one looks into their theology provided on this site, it is evident that they followed much of the same beliefs that contemporary Evangelicals and other Christian Protestants. There's no images that would been anywhere near the level of not safe for children, and they display their opposition to suicide right on the homepage. There's no spam nor pop ups, either. It just happens to be stuck in 1999-era HTML.

The ramblings of some obviously disturbed individuals. Another site asked how the loonies who sadly committed mass suicide still have a website. Pathetically there are still some loser spouting their nonsense and keeping the website going. If you have nothing to do and like to read the garbage ramblings of a megalomaniac - have a field day. Otherwise avoid. Not suitable for children, adults, or anyone with an IQ larger than their shoe size.

Apparently the proverbial "suicide cult" is no longer a suicide cult. Under "Our Position Against Suicide" they state "The true meaning of "suicide" is to turn against the Next Level when it is being offered." In other words, suicide is bad, and it keeps you from doing something or another that you should want to do. They offer transcriptions of their religious tapes for free public viewing. Since they don't want my money, I can only assume that they're weird but sincere. Their whole idea seems to be that your body is just a vehicle for the soul, and that by joining their religion you can ascend to "Evolutionary Level Above Human (what your history refers to as the Kingdom of God or Kingdom of Heaven). " In other words, their religion is vigorously borrowed from Christianity, except with aliens, elements of animism, and an endless number of "quotation" marked phrases. To be perfectly frank there are a great number of 'Christian' websites which are only a little bit more irrational, and have much less attractive webpages (I kid you not.) But this religion also seems to be involved in channeling and other such phenomena, which could be harmful to your mental health. There are no explicit images, and no viruses.

Feeling that a site has an offensive backstory is not a good reason to justify censoring something of historical value. The site is fine. WOT is a spam prevention service to my understanding.

Heaven's gate is a cult which has instructed many followers to commit suicide.

WOT must NOT be abused by using it to red-ring sites according to any content a user disagrees with. The Heaven's Gate suicide cult was a piece of our history, and sad and sorry as it seemed, at least these 39 died peacefully. Needlessly, maybe, but they had the right to make that decision. I do not agree with all their ideas, but some of them I'm 'down with', but don't see eye to eye with the HG version of them, in my case, what they claim about sexuality and all discarnate entities being bad influences. I really couldn't care less whether anyone disagrees with my opinion of HG. I am quite concerned about the abuse of WOT because I count on it to avoid spammers, phishers and most especially sites planting malware. I was doing some research on terminologies used by the cult and the red ring nearly made me get the info second hand which I always try to avoid.

Why and how is this site still up? Unless...

This website is an interesting account of the short history and odd beliefs of a now (literally) dead new religious movement. Weirdness is not a justification for giving a site a low rating.
3
I think it is good to keep this website online as a warning. It was a doomsday cult, 39 members killed themselves, it's okay that this website remains online.

What I find humorous is that the "Trustworthiness" score on WOT is a 12! Not a 2 or a 0, but a 12! LOL!
