We were so close to driving the polio virus to extinction until insane religious fanatics decided that vaccination was some kind of nefarious plot. The science of vaccination is clear. Vaccination is the single most effective public health measure since the invention of public sewer systems. No one who has actually studied the science disputes this. If Bill Gates made that assertion about reducing the world population, it would be in the context of people having fewer children if they had greater confidence that the ones they did have would survive to have children of their own. In that context, better public health can lead to at least a slowing of the rate of increase of the human population. IMHO, that would be A Good Thing since we only have one planet on which we can live.
