Is mufon.com Safe?

MUFON probably started with good intentions; ordinary people exercising their curiosity about unidentified flying objects. Their stated (although unverified) relationship with J. Allen Hynek, who, after all, was a skeptic about UFOs, is consistent with examination of unexplained phenomena. But I discovered that there were local MUFON meetings in my city, and attended with a friend to see what was happening at their meetings. She poked me with her elbow and reminded me that these were nice people, and to be polite. I went on my own a few more times - but I did not notice any skepticism. The speakers were on book tours, lecturing on books about not just UFO sightings, but other paranormal topics. The only things I can say that I find worthy about MUFON and its website is that fellowship is important, and that the organization does provide meetings for people of like mind, even if they seem to me to be misguided. Also, they do provide "field research" training - and seem to try to instruct their members in discriminating between natural and unusual sightings in the sky. Also, if this group leads someone to learn a little about astronomy, there is nothing wrong with that. Otherwise, I think people would be wise to take what they read on the MUFON website with a grain of salt.
