Ezili Dantò (né Marguerite Laurent) is a smart, determined, professional & extremely knowledgeable Attorney and social justice activist. Her latest project in Haiti is Zili Dlo. She is the go-to person for knowledge & expertise on Haitian history, news, politics or any other aspect of Haitian culture & society. She knows the personalities, families, businesses, mores & traditions. She is in contact with people on the ground, including the government, lawyers & grassroots community activist, who she aids in providing services, medicine & basic staples. She runs the Ezili Dantò Witness Program documenting political & social emergencies. Her program has supplied computers, cameras, video equipment & satellites for internet access. Her intrepid witnesses venture into dangerous areas to document emergencies, atrocities and to take witness statements as they happen (Dread Wilme speaks). Particularly in the embattled slums. Ezili Dantò supported the community leaders who stood up to the US/UN Occupation of Haiti and were massacred in Sité Soley on July 6, 2006, including the leader the UN killed over 60 people to assassinate - Dread Wilme. See "The Cite Soleil Massacre Declassification Project." She is multi-lingual; besides English, she speaks & writes fluently in Haitian Kreyol & French. She is an expert on the religious tradition of Vodun & respects & honors its traditional role in sustaining Haitian cultural & spiritual life. She is an entertainer, poet & dancer who has performed at Carnegie Hall & gives workshops, lectures & speeches about Haitian dance, society, history & religious traditions. She especially enjoys teaching young children traditional Haitian folklore, history and dance. Ezili is an authentic voice for the voiceless, helping to empower the grassroots & working tirelessly; particularly during turmoil & chaos. She advocates for struggling Haitians using her legal knowledge & training. She writes to alert the Haitian diaspora, friends of Haiti & US legislators with daily news releases. As President of the Haitian Lawyers Leadership Network (HLLN), she pushes for legislation to enfranchise Haitian immigrants, particularly those languishing in immigration jails & seeking asylum. HLLN's most recent cause has been to advocate for a stop to all deportations after the 4 hurricanes in Sept. of '08. HLLN campaigns for Temporary Protective Status (TPS) & a stop to all deportations, & is mobilizing legislative & int'l support for Haitian-American foreign policy concerns: incl. for the unconditional cancellation of Haiti's debt to int'l financial institutions; for an end to the UN occupation; for reciprocal trade & a stop to dumping food in Haiti which destroys Haiti's domestic production; for US trade laws with human rights' protection & workers' rights provisions; for US good governance & democratic enhancement policies that maximizes, not depletes the Haitian Diaspora's remittances; as well as advocating for new US foreign assistance guidelines to Haiti that ensures foreign aid reaches the vulnerable population & is not used primarily for admn, salaries & shipping fees. Visit her website - ***** & search for "What Haitian-Americans Ask of the New US Congress & President." A member of the CT and NY bars, she is a good source for legal matters regarding corporate, commercial, entertainment & Real Estate law. In her capacity as the founding partner of Laurent & Asscs, she managed as well as represented a number of talented musicians & artists, including members of Public Enemy, Last Poets, Arrested Development and more.
